I doubt anyone can say enough good things about Joy Leno's Garage videos. But I want to try.
I've never once had the feeling that he's a braggart, or that he's talking down to us. Rather, he's just regular guy, with no hidden agenda, who just plain enjoys sharing his knowledge of automotive history of his cars, with anyone. Of course, he's a natural at interjecting quips of his trademark humor, but never to the point of silly distraction. That, and his videos seem to be around 16 minuets in length; not too long, not too short.
So from me, and all on here: Thank you, Jay Leno.
shumpie41 it's interesting you say that. (Did you mean, sometimes he's, I guess, a bit stuffy) ?
Why do you find him stuffy? I've never found that really on any of his videos. Jay is one of the most unstuffy guys I've ever heard talk about cars. I find him affable, and one of us, really. He never flaunts his cars or wealth, and is just pure enthusiastic about the mechanics and aesthetics of these historical icons.
Stuffy isn't really a word I would associate with Jay Leno. But hey, each to their own, I guess.
Ok boomer
He is like a walking encyclopedia.
Just another car nut sharing the fun we had. ☺
He often brags that he’s the president of more money than brains club. Get over yourself.
My father was a commercial pilot & CFI in L.A. Some time in late 50's one of his clients was Ross Hadley, owner of the Boyle Maserati, winner of the 38 & 39 Indy 500, and the last foreign built car to win until Jimmy Clark's Lotus in 65. He was at our house with his gullwing, and in our driveway and I needed it moved a little to get the lawnmower past. I was about 13 and he tossed me the keys, my father nearly had a heart attack, ultimately I took it out of gear and let it roll back a little. But I can honestly say the first car I ever drove was a Gullwing!
I care nothing for late night talk shows, but I think I've become a fan of Jay Leno the car guy. Nothing like listening to somebody talk about something they love.
Cars I get ;)
He didn't like it either according to his interviews with joeRogan
his knowledge on cars is amazing
...and, he preps for these videos. He was on TV for 30 years. He understands the value of proper audio/video production and again, he prepares. He knows which car he's going to be filming/driving/talking about and he takes some time before the filming starts to make sure he knows what points he's going to hit. And to be fair, Jay Leno has forgotten more about cars than I and most other people will ever know.

I know an old Swiss guy who has one of these, plus several other rare European auto-mobiles, in an old warehouse here in Switzerland.
He's very cautious about who sees them - took me about 5 years before I got in there.
Thanks for these informative uploads.

My father had one, sold it when I was born. And bought a van. I think he resented me for that.
...hey let us all know where it is?
I think this car looks great. I wouldn't paint it. I think the patina and faded race numbers are what make this gullwing so unique and special. It looks and sounds like a hot rod while being a cutting-edge 1950s super car. Everyone does these cars shiny and perfect. This example is honest and real. I like that.
Keep it real and drive it Jay!!!
While in the USAF in 1967 my friend, Paul Weeks, bought a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. It was silver with red interior. It was in good condition but not restored. I rode in it a couple of times. It was the fastest car I had ever been in. He got it up to 110 mph on one run, but he wouldn't let any one else drive it. I believe he paid $5,000 for the car. Just before he got out of the Air Force, he sent thhipped the car to Germany to be fully restored. I never got to see it restored. If he kept it, what an investment he made.
Holy, I would think that WAS a fortune in '67! (EDIT: Apparently about $39K today.... A pretty penny for a car in need of a restoration, for sure...)
Man what a car... I prefer a 300sl over any modern supercar. It´s just so beautiful and perfect.
A carrera gt is not that bad
Nither are ccxr's. Especially manuals.
☝️🧐 I prefer my Honda Element.
Agreed, that car is just rediculous!
Same. Way out of my price range. I might have to settle for a 190sl. :/
The sound of that engine!
In 1989 I went back to Germany. I had been an Army brat living North of Stuttgart in the early '60's. I went to the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart.Had a great conversation with the gentleman who polished the cars on display. The cars were surrounded by velvet ropes like you see at the movie theater. I got to lean into the gullwing with the doors open to take pictures. If you get to Stuttgart, I recommend the MB Museum.
One of my favorites from your collection, what an amazing car. You guys really have it tuned well too, it sounds great.
Those days, Mercedes was really great.
with top gear folding leno's definitely one of the best car show around
Punctuation matters.
Ryan car guys don’t stop for anything!
A guy who used to be my neighbor owned (still does) a fabrication shop for vintage automobiles and bikes. I always wondered why I heard so much about him and his work but he lived in such a modest home.
My dad took me to his shop and it was just an entire garage of Ducati's, Harleys, ect. Every bike out there. probably 50 or 60 of them. HIS personal collection. He also had one of these. When I found out the price of this car, that's when you knew his business was on fire.
Such an amazing car.
What a more simple time! I'm not talking about the 1950's, I'm talking about when this was filmed. The thought of a post war car selling for over a million dollars was extreme.
I revisit this video frequently, & fall more in love with it each time. I think that is in large part to Jay's presentation. I love that he shares these clips with us. I have been around since the website days & they never get old. Thank you Jay, as well to the Big Dog garage crew, & the production crew.
100 years from now, people will talk about the Jay Leno car museum.
There will be talks about his fantastic detailed restorations, his saving of lost causes, and and his continued maintenance of survivor cars.
School children will even be given small tidbits of trivia during the tours;
"Did any of you know that Jay Leno started out as a comedian?"

Guys, don’t bring politics into the mix, just enjoy the car and the knowledge/trivia Leno passed on to us. It would have been cool if he had explained the reason behind the chassis design. They were made from artillery barrels due to the shortage of metal in Germany as a result of reconstruction. It’s what was just lying around and when they welded them together to make the frame they discovered how stiff it was for being as light as it was, making it perfect for racing. That is most likely the reason behind why it’s still nice and stiff after all these years.
@@bron7459 He's a Republican and always has been.
Amazing sound, design, Technology...
This is the First Classic car I saw when I was a kid. I felt in love immediately.
So gorgeous. Love the rear view wow. Straight 6 sounds like a Messerschmidt!
I never sign in for hardly anything but ide thought id do it for this, I had my preconceptions about Jay Leno showing off his car collection but after watching a number of episodes i can honestly say this guy is a cool down to earth guy and most importantly a genuine fan motor cars. Look at the time this man has dedicated to following his dream, its admirable, as with anything its easy to look at the end result and be a hater but understand this guy built his dream and deserves it. Very impressed, the average person has trouble getting finance on a modern day bmw, a massive contrast but it shows anythings possible if you work hard...
Donato Libor - same sentiments exactly. I've been avoiding this series since the start because of preconceived notions of Jay from late night tv. So wrong was I. Sorry Jay! It's great to hear him just talk away about his collection and go along for the drive. Such interesting stuff, huge knowledge and such a low key guy. Now I'm working my way through all the shows. I also vote to leave that car's paint as is. Shiny trailer queens are a dime a dozen (or a million a dozen) but to see a true classic in battle worn condition is something special. BTW - Stirling Moss I discovered when I was about ten is my grandmother's cousin. Whaddaya know!
I am 74. I remember when this came out, thinking to myself, this is the way all sports cars can be made, and should be made, but I was just 12 years old, what did I know. Have always loved the look, styling, manufacturing quality, design and thoughtful engineering of this car. Had I the moolah today, I would be driving one. Glad it is in the hands of Jay Leno who walks us through this.
I'm 84 and retired Navy, remember when stationed at Harbor Defense, Long Beach mid '50s a 3rd class(Radioman?)-his aunt left him money/he bought a 300SL and bitched about the price go the am/fm/sw radio...!
OK, jay has convinced me. Being rich is fun. Still I'm glad he does this series because I would never be to drive or afford one of these cars and they are cool cars.
id work in youre garage mr leno for 500 dollars a month i even sleep there just to be around those cars ,old school
Iil do it for free :)
MrSuhkoi a men got at least to eat
joel milhazes I'd pay $500 a month to be able to work there.
well not all of us have deep pockets
I would work at McDonald's part time. Then go to the garage. Sweep the floors. Change the air filters on the ventilation. Check fuse boxes and security.I will never touch the cars until you say so Mr. Leno. I have plenty more ideas. Pick me!
Perfect, iconic Teutonic masterpiece.
I LOVE that Jay drives his cars.
I love the gear whine, straight cut cogs, very mechanical. I was at White Post Restorations in Virginia once, they were doing a 300 SL, body off. What a frame! I worked at a dealership once, my boss had a Gullwing, perfect car. He had sent it back to Mercedes for the restoration. Sit in it, pull the door closed and your ears popped.
2:02 This dude Max Hoffman was *_key_* in the 300SL Gullwing, BMW 507, and Porsche 356 being a thing. He's a real unsung hero of car culture.
will he ever review a BWM 507?
Vw as well. He asked porsche for speedsters.
Exactly
Uhlenhaut 300 SLR Coupe
This is maybe the Masterpiece from Benz in the 50's
Or his Citroen SM I see in the back of many segments on different car features.
Imagine driving around in this in 1955, god you were such a baller
Still are a baller today if you are in one of these.
Le Mans 1955. A Jag of the day had better brakes. That was the problem with racing at the time the cars were too different and rules not strict enough. Racing variant of this car rammed into a Jag that emergency braked and all hell broke loose.
This car is perfection
This is possibly the best car he has ever shown us. Great review and piece of automotive legendary history.
Watch your words, there is no such thing as perfection. Tho' I will respect your opinion.
I truly believe Jay loves vehicles more than any other human on this planet. Also that he was put on this earth to teach us about cars and to remind us how to treat each other thru the beautiful things about cars and what they really mean. We love you man. Keep teaching us the good stuff.
Been watching Jay for years, somehow I missed this one? Amazing. Haven't heard a 300SL like his.
Thank you , Jay, for resurrecting this one.

Thomas Ingersoll don't you mean the writer of that Harry Potter stuff ?
Easily one of my favorite cars of all time. Beautifully designed.
My stepdad had a 300SL, not the Gullwing though, he had a roadster, and I may just be bias, but I prefer the more oval headlights of the roadster. I was a little boy when he took me around in it, only later would I understand what he meant by "this is a race car". He inherited it from his father, and later it was sold, long before I was ever tall enough to reach the pedals, sadly.
He even took me to school in it once.
Thanks Jay, massive throwback.
I like the way Mr Leno explain all the facts, very straight talk very modest and very cool too. good job nice show !
My favorite car ever! Clark Gable's Gullwing 300 sl was at an auto museum near me in the 1980s. I wonder whose collection it ended up in.
It's amazing how this car sounds :)
When I was young lad I saw one of these live, and only one. My dad and I were at Stark Alignment waiting for our 1955 Pontiac. A silver Gullwing drove inside and immediately everyone in the building were crowded around it. I've never seen that since, and by my estimation it was the most perfectly beautiful car I've ever seen.
Best car show out there. Thank you for actually starting and driving these cars.
Holy Jesus that engine soundtrack.
'ya don't need a radio' Perfect
Jay...you are one of the few men in the world that can pick up the phone and find someone to lend you a Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spider for a drive and review.
Lots of fans around the world are counting on you :)
The sound is amazing!
Cars like these are one of the reasons I respect Jay Leno. He loves those old classic cars. I really like old Benz cars. I'll never forget being offered to purchase an old Benz with a 5.5 or something like V8. I don't regret not buying it though. The amount of money I would have spent on that car would have been terrible for me at that time. :)
This is by far my favorite video on this channel. I've watched it more times than I can keep track of simply because the 300SL is a gorgeous car and Jay's genuine love and admiration and reverence for this car and its history. The imperfections and the fact that this model isn't a "show queen" is what's so charming and almost approachable about the car and subsequently the video. In my numerous fantasies where I visit Jay's garage, this is always the one I keep coming back to.
P.S., I see an MG Midget hiding back there in the garage. I would love to see a video on that. :)
This is an outstanding episode... if the fanbois are willing to admit that some are better than others.
Jay is just a guy talking and showing cars, who happens to be a multimillionaire.
Well he wouldn't be here talking about and showing his cars if he wasn't a multimillionaire as he wouldn't have been able to afford his car collection
When many wealthy celebrities end up dying young, or spending their later years without money because they blew it all years earlier, or fighting lifelong drug addiction and alcoholism.....Jay Leno saved every penny he made from his years on the Tonight Show. He only lived on the money he made by his appearances in Las Vegas and live comedy
shows. Yes, he's a multimillionaire, and well deserved through hard work and wise management. Now, in his later years, he is able to enjoy every drop of his childhood fantasies, which was to own and work on cars.
Jay has become a world-respected icon in the car industry, and manufacturers as well as collectors regard him as a legendary ambassador in the automotive world.
@@jennifer86010 His estimated wealth is approximately 150 million.
@@robertphillips6296 That takes a load off my mind, because I have a couple of cars I want to sell him, and it's great to know he's able to pay cash !!
@@robertphillips6296 After doing some research on what Jay Leno got paid for the years he worked on The Tonight Show, and adding up all the cars he restored and now owns, all of which are insured and registered in California to drive, and additional investments Jay has, I've arrived at a conclusion which is at least five times the $150 million dollar figure you mentioned.
I graduated college in June 1967 and went to USAF officer’s training school in San Antonio. I had purchased a new GTO. Most of us fresh college graduates/trainees had new cars. This was the muscle car era; Mustangs, Chevelles, Corvettes, etc. We were restricted on base for a month, so the Air Force had a parking lot for us with a chain link fence. On Saturday, we were allowed to start our car engines, but not drive them. One the guys in my class had a gull-wing Mercedes. Grey in color. His grandmother gave it to him as a college graduation present. I went to pilot training and then to Vietnam and never saw him again. His last name was Cotton. After a month in that training course, we were able to take our cars out on Saturday on the loop around San Antonio. The gull wing was the fastest of all.
I often watch this to get inspired to work on some of my own projects, one car is outside on a concrete slope, which makes fixing a tad trickier, and the wind an rain slowly ware you down, then I come back get a cup of tea, watch this again regain enthusiasms go back out and so on.but slowly my cars gettin done, so thankyou.Shame about the scrape, preserving patina is one of the hardest things, love the interior on this and the paint,in uk if it ain't painted it's gone..I wonder if the original painter could airbrush paint in the devoid of paint bits? I'd probably leave it,with new paints and new leathers almost not old anymore, half then half now. To restore or not restore, you can take originality to far, old tyres control cables, once on an MV a horse jumped out on me,I braked cable snapped, I swore at it which surprisingly worked,I made new cables then!
Love the engine noise sounds really mean.
Straight 6 cylinders engine
Bullet proof
It goes and goes and keeps going
Specially with Kompressor
Supercharged possible back then
It was a Rocket in the 50's
Not even damn Ferrari could keep up with the Benz 300 SL
Don't think I've ever heard one. Absolutely fantastic.
all has been said about this masterpiece..unbelievable car.. BUT THAT SOUND !!!
I’d rather have a gullwing than a new Lamborghini
For me, that comment was funny because the only Lamborghini I like is the Miura.
I love the paint the way I love the ruins of ancient buildings. When they're restored it adds a lot of realism, showing you what it was like back in the day. However it takes away a lot of realism too, a visual sense of how old the car is, what it's been through etc. It's the true character of this particular chassis number.
This has got to be the most beautiful car on the road. My heart rate actually went up considerably just watching and listening to it being driven. Fantastic.
8:00 lol.. he just cuts him off
+Bateman he does that in every episode
+Bateman do you like huey lewis and the news?
+Bateman Ah yeah, he does that to almost every guest he has, it's just to keep the ball rolling and prevent the convo getting too boring.

Bateman he cuts off everyone. arrogant.
I find it made me chuckle when I noticed that the license plate was blurred out, but the big 263 was on the door,.. " Duh,...I wonder who owns the red gull wing with the 263 on the doors ?"
What a wonderful car, Jay,....ya done good ! Thanks for the 'ride', I really enjoyed this video.
I'd leave it as is. So much character an history with the paint and interior just throw some clear over it and call it done

AlexCoronaPhoto true but I can’t imagine the sad mind that buys a car like this with the immediate thought of selling it
I'm feeling you, Bro. Totally. It has its iconic design, AND it carries its history. Perfect the way it is.

This is one of my favorite cars from Jay's collection. God bless you Jay!
Nice Jay! 300SL is one of my top 3 cars all time (along with McLaren F1 & Volvo P1800). Thanks for sharing close looks at all of these!
“Good ones go for half a million dollars.” In 2019 one that hasn’t started in 35 years asking price 1.4 million. Crazy.
Fun Fact: The horn on the passenger side was for alert/distress purposes. At the time of manufacturing, Benz vehicles were notorious for being the brand of cars women were raped in believe it or not. To combat this, Benz implemented the safety horn on the other side so that the passenger can have immediate access should they not be able to reach for the wheel.
Another fun fact: I just made that bullshit up I really have no fucking clue why it is there.
vass Montenegro greatest comment ever just epic lmao
fucking brilliant xD
GENERAL ZOD i dont think many that could aford these were rapist, also this was the fifties.
i have no idea why the second hornbutton was for either.
GENERAL ZOD i was like wtf ? Why would a person use the car horn if he was raped ?
I _think_ the second horn button on the dash is a leftover from racing - for those races when you had to carry a mechanic/navigator. That way, the driver could keep his hands on the wheel when blasting sideways through a town, and the passenger could hit the horn to warn people to keep back. Anyone out there know of any other possibly reason?
The first true supercar in my opinion. Beautiful timeless design and I would not do anything to it. I love it just the way it is with all the years showing.
That used look is absolutely amazing. Please keep it that way

I promoted vintage sport car racing in Washington state 30 plus years ago. One event that I put on was a lunchtime show for the Nascar (Winston West) race at Seattle International Raceways. Dale Earnhardt won the nascar race that day and came to talk to me afterward. During my lunchtime race, one competitor spun his 300 s.l. gullwing twice on consecutive laps right in front of Dale. He told me that he had looked foreword to the race all week but the 300 spinning was beyond his expectations as though we had it spin for his benifit. A friend of mine gave me a photo of the car spinning just this year.
I went with my aunt's boy friend to the 1959, New York Coliseum Auto Show Where he purchased a gray 300SL gull wing Mercedes Benz with red leather interior. I am not sure but I think he paid 6k. Driving. That's what these were made for. And that's what he does. It's just so sad seeing other car collections where the masterpieces are just hooked up to some electric gizmo, knowing their engines will never sputter to life, never be alive, such a sad thought... Twin horn buttons may be for France which I think required a separate country horn and a city horn around that time - remember the Renault Dauphine of the early 1960s? Fuel injection sounds perfect, with every cylinder sharp and equal on a cold start. Bosch mechanical injection in Mercedes and Porsche was great when clean and regulated properly. Thanks for your auto efforts and philosophy, Jay. We need more of this.
As a W210 E55 owner, it makes me so happy that Jay freaking Leno owns an E55.
I sold a 1957 300 Gullwing back in 1991 out of San Jose CA for $450,000. This car was fully restored top to bottom. It was the AAA Auto Show BEST Of Show winner back then for 3 years. Even the belly pans were polished. It had the optional suit cases in the back seat.. This 4 speed was very fast. I took it over 135 mph on Highway 280..!!
One of the great things about Jay is he's remained such a car enthusiast that I actually get excited him (and me, both) that a regular guy who happens to be a multi-millionaire comic TV legend gets to own and drive some of the coolest cars ever. BTW: the sound of of that gullwing's exhaust has the perfect ratio of 'throat' to 'balls!'
I love the way the mechanic leans against the front wing with the confidence of a man who REALLY knows his stuff. What an amazing car to work on.
Absolutely looks and sounds fantastic. My father had a 1955 MB 300SL gullwing back in 1961. Then he saw a MB 190 convertible so he traded the 300SL. I was just 14 years old and not knowing anything about MB, I liked his TR3 and MGA better. I sure wished I had that MB 300SL now. I love your show. It makes me reminisce about all those cars from the 60's-70"s. My father either sold cars or had his own dealerships from 1961-1990's. I was lucky to drive some of the greatest cars, because of my father. Thanks.
When I lived in Geneva, I used to regularly see this guy driving a grey Gullwing. It was obviously his daily commute, and like Jay's car it was in very original condition - definitely not restored. I'd see it across the road, going in another direction, turning ahead of me, parked up, but never in my lane. Then, one day, there it was pulling up at the lights...
I drew up alongside it and peered at the driver. I guess he was about seventy or so, expensive suit and tie, very reserved looking. Some old count or other I guessed. I was driving a hire car - VW Golf GTi - and I thought I might race him. But he never once glanced at me. However, when the lights changed the Gullwing took off like a monster - taking me completely by surprise, and I had to do some really quick work catch him up. He beat me to the lights where, once again he exploded off the line at the green, but this time I managed to keep up and out-braked him to the reds (probably due to the VW being lighter).
Never once did he look over at me. What a dude!
restore her Jay, in silver arrow :Q_____ and bring her back for another video !!
Elbowz
silver would be the right color for a mercedes, the fast mercedes cars were called "silberpfeil", that means silverarrow.
Light yellow!!!
Benefactor Stirling GT anyone?
Lol that's a nice car. That and the Monroe are my fav classics:)
aenhim prod Just wrote the exact same thing :)
aenhim prod ;)
yeah the only upgrade on it is the paint (grey with a white pearlecant)
'Over-run' ~ yep, one can always count on Jay for adding to one's vocabulary ! Thanks Jay !
Jay it 's is a german tank ,would you rather be in a sherman or King Tiger even porsche could not make a faster car then,It is the ultimate super car ,you were reading the car mags when this was built
+chris doyle Porsche were only knocking out cool little sports cars on the Beetle platform back then. I've had an 80's Mexican bug and a 356 in bits side by side and you could probably have swapped a lot of the parts. The 300SL is in another league to the 356 - Jaguar and Ferrari are another matter.
You know nothing of history ,look up world 2 history of porsche And and mercedes and auto union/audi ,they built everything from cars to tanks and even gun barrels ,but you can live in fantasyLand ,And the war is over but people hide
+Rob W very true. The Porsche 550, as great as it was, had just more than half the power. Assumingly more than enough regarding it's ingedients:) Plus, i've watched Jay's McQueen machine video before this..the XKSS looks so much wilder, doesn't it. I love the slick shape of the gullwing, it's breathtaking, but that Jag's just savage
Jay. Please, please, PLEASE do not paint that car.
I second that motion.
Nigel Honey
why not, the paint is really bad and comes of already to much and those big numbers on the doors are useless and dont mean anything.
Martin Luther Branon Fontaine Because the car has a fantastic patina that tells part of its story. Restore it to new and it looses all its character and soul, which it is oozing with now.
Martin Luther The bare metal can be protected with a product called Anker Wax which is very popular in the rat rod community.
Nigel Honey
for a museum yes
In all the world...of all the engineering effort ever spent regarding the transportation of us humans whether public or private...this one particular car to me...is the...most beautiful. Thank you Jay for leaving it alone...and driving it.I would drive it everyday..and love everything about it.
