New Guard I Invented (The Vice)

  • This is a new guard position I have been developing over the last year, I call it The Vice. It is a position I stumbled across while trying an old school lasso inverted triangle attack, I stumbled across this control that locks your opponents hand under your leg allowing you to force a triangle/armbar and many other attacks ( Crab Ride, Berimbolo, Ankle Lock, Wrist Lock, Guard Passes, Crucifix, Omoplata) also it is very difficult to get out of. In addition it also is very hard to escape by falling back to your guard which gives the added benefit of making it off set the constant sweep battle that happens in competition. I have been testing it on many high level competitors coming through the gym the last year and it has been working great so far. I’m going to be getting back to competition soon and hope to get some great footage with me and my students in competition using it. I’m also excited to see the positions you all create since it’s a new position it will be fast evolving. Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts and please try to use it in class your self and post videos of it and tag @JonThomasBJJ #TheViceGuard #TheVice

I’ve been playing with this and I’ve been taking the “reverse lassoed” foot under the leg for a sweep where I come up into mounted triangle. If they base out to stop the sweep I triangle from there, they base out and roll under I end up in another mounted triangle. I like to hide the foot to stop them controlling that leg and undoing my lasso to the pass.

Hey man, if you don't mind me asking. Why did you get shoulder surgery? I have problems with my shoulders as well, have probably dislocated my left shoulder about 8 times. It always pops out, usually during scrambles. Only way to fix it is surgery. I don't want to be off the mats though for that long. Usually when I do dislocate it, it is better within a couple weeks. Scar tissue around the socket just seems to heal faster now since I have dislocated it so much. Have been lifting recently to try and strengthen the muscles around it, it has seemed to help a bit. If you did get surgery for dislocating it, you think it is worth it? How long were you off the mats for? Thanks in advance brother, oss!

    Hey Jon!
    Really, really great stuff!
I tried it out in training today and it worked really good considering it's the first time I ever did it.
So there a few questions I have:
    1. This has been asked many times and you already said you are going to make a video, but the main thing that happened was people underhooking the vice leg and going for a double under. So what do?
    2. Another thing was that I managed to weave the leg over the arm, but they caught it on the way to the body and shoved it down between their knees, trapping it. So kind of like the beginning of a pressure pass from their point of view. Any tips to avoid this or something I can productively do from there?
    3. Entries - please give me more! Specifically, it seemed to me that I needed to create a situation where I had the cross grip and they had no grips in order to weave the leg without giving a free pass. Even them having a sleeve on my other arm seemed to give me some trouble - what do you think is the minimum requirement in order to start entering (weaving the leg) without giving up position?
Thank you very much, I'm excited to keep working on this!

Not sure if Jon will comment or not, but from what I see, he doesn’t let go or sleeve control at any point, I think as you maintain the grip and post the right foot on hip it would prevent the stack.
      But I could be wrong.

    • @daxthedza
      @daxthedza 4 года назад +1

I think you gotta bump or sweep right away to force them to post or keep them off balance. Or pull on the the collar with the left hand to keep the posture broken. All while keeping that shin tight to the armpit. That way, even if they try to circle out, their side would just ride the shin until they hit your foot hook. It shouldn’t get that far if you break posture with the collar pull, bump, or sweep

From the position at 2:15: So what happens when she swims her left arm under you right leg, circles around, and drops heavy into a kind of side-control position on your left side with your right arm trapped between your legs and her smashing hard on you? While you still have her lapel, it looks like there's enough slack so that she's not going to be choked and your guard has basically been nullified? I need to make the disclaimer here that my jiu jitsu skills are by no means anything to brag about, just wondering how you deal with that?

What stops her swimming her left arm under your right leg (e.g. at 3:45)? She can then drop her base, grip fight and neutralize the guard from a sort-of double under position. There might even be a smash pass available from there if she controls your right leg and drives to her right.

    • @JonThomasBJJ

Tim O'Leary In the video there is actually video of my opponent trying that and I have a back take set up, also I can hook the far arm with my left leg when they dig for it, it’s in the sparring video as well. I would urge you to play with the position a bit to feel it out. Sometimes it’s hard to get a feel things just by looking. But that is a legit counter to try but there is a lot of re counters for it and so far it has been working great for me

Ok, I guess you can can use your lapel grip to lift your hips and push your right knee/leg to her chest. Or unbalance to force a post. I'll play with it. Thanks.

The best part about this is you didn't just show it's use on lower belts but actually added clips against other black belts. Respect. Will try.
