Hands down your complete guide videos are the best pieces of Bjj instructional content I have ever seen. This is the type of stuff I expect from seminars. Must be insane to be coached by you everyday. Please keep these coming. One day I hope to have a game as complete as yours and be able to teach it back to others
Thanks buddy I really appreciate it! Would love to have you visit sometime or see you at a seminar! Do my best to relay the complexity of jiu jitsu into simple understandable videos
Just to comment on this video, I'd like to say that the entirety of this channel is fantastic. You can find great instructors and great competitors, but rarely a person who is both. It's awesome to find one.
Thanks so much! Have been putting a lot of effort into it recently and want to keep evolving the quality of the content. So it means a lot to have the support!
Thought it'd try this today. I already use the omoplata sweep when someone stands in closed guard but can lose it when someone postures. The detail of using the heel first is incredible. Hit it first time of asking in training today. My hero
Outstanding video. Next generation teacher and communicator - love that I've discovered this treasure trove of details to dive into, as I make a return to bjj from a lengthy lay-off!
Wow! I think this open guard will be one that I would like to really explore! Thank you fro posting! I found this channel two days ago and its a godsend!
Very nice. Would love to see a no gi version of this as well (I feel like the omoplata would work worse, but a lot of the rest of the system could be saved).
Dude I don’t know what it is about your teaching style that gets me where I need to go. I’m a 5’10” 215 lb life long wrestler. I’m a purple belt and obviously playing guard and all that was never my style. I started watching your “cross guard” & guard retention videos over and over(just those) and out of nowhere I suddenly have a guard. I’m normally a top player but now I find myself looking to go bottom. Good stuff now I’ll check out the rest.
Wow huge compliment! I’m happy the videos have had that big of an affect. I think a lot of it is that I focus on the positions as a whole which gives overall context, rather than going deep on 1 technique which can leave you confused if you don’t know where that technique fits in with the rest of the position and guard as a whole.
Thanks for this series. This position is very very similar to K guard except in the Gi and they are standing, so this should pair well with my K guard no-gi game.
I love this guard and the details at the end while you're teaching your students are very helpful. Plenty of little issues I've had attacking the omoplata and matrix from here off the closed guard standing set up if my muscle sweep fails, and you basically provided solutions to all of those issues so thank you.
Yeah the matrix really makes the position work so much better I stopped playing it for a long time, when Tommy and espen innovated the matrix I started playing it again and it makes it so much more powerful
@@JonThomasBJJ i started using it as a plan b off my basic closed guard game and quickly realized it worked with my squid game on the other side if they stand on my closed when I don't have the sleeve. Such a useful position.
I have subscribed to your channel! These complete guides are fantastic!! The best instructional overviews on RUclips!! Thank you for making them and keep them coming!
@@JonThomasBJJ How do you approach when they crowd that knee elbow space on the near side and bend their elbow to prevent the omoplata? The x guard tilt sweep at 3:15?
I really love this! I've been having some great success with this, but also found some trouble lately with two scenarios when they are standing. 1) Person grabs the free leg + removes the elbow space or keeps the elbow at an angle (blocking the omoplata). So I end up in a weird situation where I can't seem to do anything. 2) Big strong guy reaches down with free hand gets grip on back of pants and pulls up, stacking me.
Freakin awesome as always. Jon is awesome! I m filming my first instructionnal in 2 weeks and people like Jon are great inspirations! Thank for sharing so much content!
Haha sorry about that buddy! I find usually when I release stuff like this it drives me to develop new stuff. Honestly since starting the channel my jiu jitsu has sky rocketed
@@JonThomasBJJ all good man, everything should be public knowledge. I am glad everything is so easy to access. I started over a decade ago and it was a lot harder to find good info on any position. Keep up the good work!
@@JonThomasBJJ With perspective it's all good. Restrictions are easing, but training is on hold while Tommy are upgrading the mat. Hated to see u leave tho. Felt like i didn't get to take enough advantage. I'm moving to northern norway. Maby i can get the people there to invest in a seminar with u, if u return to Norway^^
So comprehensive and easy to understand Jon! One question though -- If they're in a low combat base such that their knee on the same side as the sleeve you grab is up and that knee-elbow connection is tight, can you still apply the attacks? Doesn't seem like you'd even be able to get that underhook on that leg. Maybe that opens them up for an arm drag instead? Thanks for all your great content!
@10:26 can you talk about your grips and how you generate that much slide to get behind the opp? Getting to the first x hook is easy but I’m getting stuck before being fully behind for the crab ride.
Did you watch my matrix overview video? I discuss the idea of hopping up in shoulder to create the slide, also apply more force with your right ankle behind their knee and pull it should helps move you around
At 9:31 you're threatening the oomaplata, and he does the standard somersault escape. I usually stay on top to get side control with the arm trapped. You throw yourself into a somersault next to him and take his back. Is this something you or others have covered? It is as simple as "somersault next to him and you'll be at his back?"
Well I somersault to chase the Omoplata I end up finishing the Omoplata by shrimping away . But yeah anytime someone rolls in an Omoplata you can reroll to chase it.
Yeah the foot in armpit style is very Robson style, although he actually puts the foot directly on the arm pit. I use to play with that a lot a long time ago I need to try to add it back in and see what can be done with it.
Yeah you could for sure, but I think vs a stronger opponent I wouldn’t chase it, it’s hard to hit and can expose you to a bad position. I think matrix or Omoplata is safer option there.
@@JonThomasBJJ ok, thanks for the feedback! Working on the cross guard right now, so I am exploring the opportunities! :) It interconnects really well into cross collar sleeve/DLR etc. Love it! :)
Jon This is an Awesome series! I've been using it for a while after studying one of your earlier videos. What other options are there from the under hook da La Riva if the person doesn't open the elbow knee space?
Yeah pe de pano was the man! The way he played it was a slightly different system, he did a deeper Underhook and would often come up into an almost turtle position and re roll it would be fun to go back and watch some of the videos and see if I can incorporate some of what he was doing.
Do you ever use your same side hand on the tricep or elbow to expose the hip and break posture? I struggle to expose the hip sometimes not so much with cross sleeve but with same side sleeve grip.
Question jon. If at 9:27 your training partner was content with just sticking in that backwards mount position would you do something like a funk roll from wrestling to advance and sweep?
Yeah you could do that to come up on top and take the sweep but I like to chase the submission and usually just reroll to back on bottom to chase the finish. If I feel more confident on top though I might just take the sweep too
