- This video I go over the foundations of understanding the Matrix back take, as well as show my favorite way for setting it up. I show set ups from X Guard, Omoplata, Cross Guard, and the Key Master. in addition I have a lot of sparring footage to demonstrate how to actually use these techniques in sparring. Comment and let m know if you have any questions or requests.

I've spent $1000+ on BJJ instructionals, yet this free channel is some of the best instruction I've seen.
Why so much not worth it. RUclips has so much content all you have to do is type in the move you want to see
100%
Why all this content is free?? You help me so much!
Well I want to build a following of people who really appreciate the analytical approach to learning and developing jiu jitsu. So this builds the following and when I do seminars or sell a product people who like what I do often buy to support me.
@@JonThomasBJJ Thanks for all the videos. You're the main reason why I got my GrapplersGuide membership. Your far side collar and sleeve there helped me a lot. :)

@@JonThomasBJJ u are so amazing
Interesting how close matrix is to some of the no gi backside 50-50 entries. Such a dope guide!
That's what I was thinking. I'm trying to figure out why you would do a K guard style backtake if you can just do this. Maybe it's just that you have more options to a attack the legs with a k guard type of entry. Duno
@svish5790 the way Jon is moving around to the back really requires gi grips.
I like how you inserted the footage of you teaching your students, I feel like this will help a lot as most of us will be making the same mistakes when we practice it ourselves
Love it too.
a lot of good extra details
Can I just say that adding the commentary and corrections while students go through it is phenomenal. Seeing the troubleshooting is a huge bonus! Thank you.
Thanks buddy I feel so many small things come up while teaching that it’s really valuable to add into the videos
This was very very good Jon. Clear and precise instruction and densely packed with information. Especially great with all the rolling examples and the added text explaining the transitions. What a treat to get this for free :) Please keep this format.
I will for sure buddy, was fun making it, got a new camera and finally learning the editing skills to put together some cooler ideas. Looking forward to making more content soon.
Thanks Coach! Got me thinking.
awesome content! really appreciated.
Really nice video. Thank you
Best tutorial video! Love the fact that not only you described really well the move, but you also show your students and the different questions that may rise as they try the move! Thank you!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love the guide. Especially in this format, where u can see it from different students as well and the questions that we the viewers would have are brought up here. Thank you for this
Thank you sir
great instructional video
You making this widely available is the best birthday gift ever! I really enjoy how you included the parts of working with students. Really allows us for any red flags or pitfalls when attempting the technique. Thank you!
You are an amazing teacher. Bravo!
Really like this format of vid, keep up the great work
Great format and content! Especially with you explaining to the students at the end. Please keep this format :)
Man, such a great content, thank you
I like this format of video
Super cool transitions and reactions 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Dude this guy teaches very precisely, I love it
Good stuff. I'm just learning the matrix, and the details you point out (like how to control the opponents with foot hooks to prevent forward stepping) are going to help me a lot. Also the sound quality of the videos is top notch!
Beautiful!!!
Loving these, as well as your overview style tutorials and narrated rolls!
Thanks buddy I’ll be doing another narrative rolling session soon too!
There doesn't exist a better professor to cleanly explain what's going on in the instruction. A+++
Thank you for all of this Jon!
No problem buddy thanks for commenting and supporting the channel!
Love it great details
Love this format an music
Thank you. Easy to understand and good details.
Thanks a lot buddy I try to be concise in what I do, even though the video was 18 min lol
I asked for this last video and Jon delivered 😎
Thanks for the request buddy happy to deliver!
In terms of how are you doing you’re killing it
Excellent video. great format.
Thanks a lot buddy appreciate the support!
That was So FN Good!!! Thank you for posting. This is right where I'm at in my BJJ journy.
wow - format is incredible! Thank you.
Happy you liked it buddy!
Broooo, this is a good explanation..I enjoyed it.oss
Love it! Thanks for posting this.
Thanks buddy happy to share the info.
Must master this. Thanks so much, Jon!
Keep working at it and you will get it!
Excellent detail of this technique. Very smooth. I like how you added the content of helping your students. Can't wait for the next one!
Yeah the format of helping students makes a big difference!
Awesome technical videos Professor ~ I saw you on Lucas Lepri videos when I was searching for Lucas Lepri backtake. Now I can't wait to add Matrix into my bag of arsenal. Thank you ~! Ossu
Thank you for the awesome content! Very well explained.
Thanks buddy happy it helped!
I'd like to see more like this one!! I really appreciate seeing you teaching, and watching students learn what to do and especially what not to do. This type of video really does bring more awareness to common mistakes.
I enjoy your videos, thanks for all the content!
Thanks a lot, the clips of people asking questions brings out so much more value than I expected. So many small problems appear that a lot of people will deal with.
Loving this video format- its so wholesome having high-level content on RUclips, thank you man!
Happy to help buddy!
Thank you Jon! You are providing such a valuable service to the BJJ community!!
Trying to do my best show off the beauty of the art!
This is awesome. Just by trying to do this can add so much mobility and awareness. Thanks for the incredibly informative video!
Yeah working matrix and key master has actually improved my mobility a lot! Just playing certain positions can really improve your flexibility.
Amazing video. I've been really trying to incorporate more of an x guard / matrix style game into my guard (plus k guard in no gi) and this has really helped simplify the system. Would love to see more videos like this in the future. Also jon your matrix highlight montage was absolutely filthy
Thanks buddy I’m gonna add more sequences like that in my videos in the future. I think the mix of all the different methods of learning provides a lot of value.
great contents! thanks a lot!
6:15 really spoke to me as im always finding myself in that position. great ideas being shared, thank you.
No problem buddy appreciate the comment and really happy to help!
I’ve been attacking it from Choi bar or legs on back position when my opponent postures. It’s a nice series of movements because the top/outside leg just consistently comes over the top, then I shift my hips square to the floor, turn my hips and throw the top leg over, shift hips square, etc etc
Great stuff! been experimenting with this for a while now so its great to get all these awesome details
Happy it helped buddy, hopefully you are hitting them in the gym all the time now!
Thanks for all the videos. I've been having a lot of fun spamming this move from everywhere. It's so intuitive.
Yeah I haven’t played around too much with five bolos and crab rides but I’m sure that’s gonna become a fun thing to start spamming soon as well!
Love the format Jon. I watched this a few times then did a drilling session and I was getting the technique from all the situations you showed; I could never quite get this to work previously, I think the details on getting up on your shoulder and making sure you don't go too deep with the matrix hook made all the difference - thanks Jon!
Yeah that one or my favorite ways to do it, the high shoulder variation is so fast. That being said when guys stay low or back step it’s important to have good crab ride and x hook finishes.
This is amazing
I’ve been learning all of my spider guard stuff from you Jon! Thanks again.
No problem buddy happy you are liking the stuff, and happy it has helped, look forward to sharing more soon.
Great tutorial, can't wait to start playing with it!
Hope it works out well for you buddy!
This format is extremely useful.
Yeah I liked adding in the class footage at end it helps unlock a lot of common errors people have
Really dig this format. The slow-mo live roles plus coaching segment really help bring the lesson home. Great job Professor! 🤙🏽
Yeah these formats are really fun to make! Expect more soon!
Incredibly useful content. Not only was the primary information (matrix details) really helpful, but the secondary details (key master tension/pull, omoplata heel in the armpit details) were really useful as well. We ended up drilling for about 2 hours today just off all the content from this video. Mind blowing that this is free. Thank you Jon.
Happy to help buddy, sometimes a few small details like that can unlock everything for you!
Super cool video🔥🔥 the coaching was super insightful
Yeah I felt that was a nice addition at the end for people to pick up extra details that come up when learning, and if you just want to watch the overview you can watch the beginning. Happy you liked it!
this format is perfect for a teaching video. The 3 ways to study the technnique really help understanding it better. Please keep it up!
Yeah adding in the sparring clips I feel adds a ton of value especially with the little write ups calling out details.
I really enjoy all your stuff bro I first saw you on the grapplers guide and out of all the experts there your the one I most see!
Thanks so much really happy you have been enjoying the content. Just trying to stay consistent and keep working at it.
Well, if you ever do a full DVD on this Matrix system, you'll definitly have my money ! Thank you so much for covering this technique this is so hard to find ! I love this kind of videos where you teach your students at the end ! Thank you sooo much !
Thanks buddy be sure to check out wulfing academy they have a ton of content in matrix crab ride and bolo. I enjoy the clips teaching students too I feel it adds a lot of small details I might have missed showing before.
thanks for the content
Subed and liked keep them coming !
Excellent structure love the coaching part
Thanks buddy I think a lot of small questions like that adds a lot
great technique
Really like watching you hit it during live rolls. As a black belt for me it was easier to see it with the other person also going live...thanks for posting!
you make some awesome videos, lots of information, glad I subscribed!!!!!!
Happy you subscribed to buddy! Appreciate the support!
My instructor was introducing us to this the other day, and I (white belt) had quite a difficult time remembering what to do...this help immensely. Thank you.
I love your skills~! You are master of modern bjj!
Thank you so much buddy!
Very nice! Was good to look back on this video to reflect on the Thursday class. It is going to improve my movements a bit!
Your progress have been amazing Jesper! So proud of how much you have committed to learning all this new stuff. Thanks for letting me film and see you in class on Tuesday!
Very nice 👍
🔥 dropping knowledge!
Doing my best to give as much value as I can buddy!
Amazing Stuff
Thanks! Love the format.
Thanks buddy I know it’s long but I put a lot of value in it
@@JonThomasBJJ you have the short videos too but this one answers a lot of the questions I had. I can go back and forth and fill in the gaps. The knee safety question at the end was probably the biggest doubt.
Awesome video...
Thanks so much buddy!!
Thx 4 this, was on one of your seminar 2y ago can't what until you can have them again.. all the best
Thanks buddy, which seminar were you at?
@@JonThomasBJJ summer champ at Nacka dojo :)
Would have paid 50 bucks for this instructional. You give it for free. Awesome!!
Happy to help buddy, I give a lot away for free but the reality is there is so much depth to knowledge in jiu jitsu this just scratches the surface,
I love working from curu curu and X-guard. Can't wait to start looking for this position and add another wrinkle to my game.
Hope it works out well buddy, it’s a fun position and can transform a lot of positions you already play with new attacks.
Love you video 🙏
Thanks so much buddy! Happy you liked it!
i’ve been waiting for this one😁😁
Hope you like it buddy it’s a big one lol
@@JonThomasBJJ you’ve got me wanting to move to Sweden with all these techniques
I was just promoted to Blue Belt after Three Years and Seven Months of hard work. Jon's approach to cross guard along with focusing on the Matrix has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for me to grow as a BJJ practitioner. I look forward to become more advance and to carry on the techniques throughout the journey to Purple Belt. Thank you Jon!
Wow really happy to hear I have had so much influence on your game! Excited for your purple belt journey and hope the content continues to help.
dude next level editing on this one !!
Thanks Viktor, appreciate letting me film and being such a good student!
Good job
Great production value on this one Jon!
This is by far the best video you've done so far imo, I really appreciate the music, slow-mo's, text on screen, HD quality
@@maxikozie thanks buddy put a lot of effort into it, will definitely be doing more like this soon!
thanks, subscribed
More generally that matrix attack looks like a great movement drill to coordinate the switching of feet and grips, shrimping, and backspinning in order to move around a standing opponent. Awesome!
Yeah I think even if you can’t implement stuff right away sometimes it allows for people to unlock new patterns and increase movement ability.
Badass for sure
Great stuff @JonThomasBJJ! Wondering why you advise against a deep underhook at 16:38? Thanks!
Gracias por compartir de huevoosss ..!!! saludos ..!! oss...!!!
Wicked. Keep it up.
Thanks buddy I will for sure!
대박이다.. thank you!
No problem happy to help
I can't wait for learning this with my partner haha. Thank you so much JON :))
02:50
No problem buddy hope you get a lot out of it! It’s a fun technique to play with, and it’s super effective!
thank you, love this explanation. nice how for a moment its x guard on one leg from behind.
Yup it’s such a cool position
Omg thank you !! Matrix and crab ride is the new berimbolo. If you don’t know it you’re getting your back taken.
Yeah a good matrix is so critical!
What Cobrinha series are you referring too?
Awesome material Jon!!!
Very didactic and detailed. You make it easy to people to understand. Could you break out counters? Nice Job thanks
Thanks buddy I do my best to make stuff that is complicated simple and digestible
I knew I subscribed to the right channel.... Oss 🙏
Thanks buddy you definitely did! Appreciate the support!
Loss of words! THANK you
That’s the desired effect! Hope you enjoy it buddy!
@@JonThomasBJJ An extra comment here to show some more appreciation, costs nothing!
@@cablepp You Rock Bro!!
Thank you Thomas, hope you enjoyed your stay in Haugesund!
I would not mind your take on the X-guard, especially entries and how to link it to DLR or collar sleeve:)
Hey buddy I play x a lot but it’s not my main focus right now so I’ll probably wait a bit before releasing some deeper content on it, I like to do deep dives before dropping these huge breakdowns.
Love it. I’m new- I hope you lay your system out, especially your go to kazuchi. (Wish i could train under you)
Visit Sweden someday buddy we love having visitors
So the matrix is a back take from the K guard position 🤔. Thank you for this video I learned a lot. Can’t wait to work on it.
