This is a great video and love the format of showing all the grips, sweeps, etc. all together so we can know the chains and options from the position. Please more of these!
You're videos are awesome brother man! The reason why I think it's awesome it's because you give us the principles of the position instead of just a random technique. Thank you Sir, oss
Very very good video. And thank you for this. You really do a great job and it's quite impressive. This is better than some of the videos that I have paid for. Love it 👍
holy crap this video is incredible. this is exactly what I needed to understand the landscape of the position. and give me goals and reasons for my actions. Thank you so much.
A purple belt in my club mentioned the other day how no one in the club really does De La Riva and so I was like... I must learn more* so here I am. Thanks, Jon! (*I'm a white belt and need to know more about everything, in general, to be honest, hahah.)
love this video 4 stripe white belt here been having a problem with both top and bottom de la riva. something to rep after watching this! thanks for the different variations and breakdown of the position.
very helpful video... i know there are a few out there on the subject, but due to how clear your teaching style is, i'd like to see you do a quick explanation of the Roleta sweep... I feel I'm missing out on some of the fine details.
Once again: excellent vid. Your content is SO good that I'm almost used to it (in a good way of course). Dude- you are a BORN teacher. I wish SO badly you were my instructor. You excellent at both doing- AND TEACHING- BJJ. John one question: have you ever done Judo? Because if not I PROMISE YOU you should. I ask- btw- for selfish reasons: I would pay $$$$ to learn Judo techniques from you in the same style as you teach ground fighting (called "Newaza" in Japanese; "Waza" means "technique," with Ne equaling "ground" and Tachi(waza) equaling standing (i.e., throws). Judo is the other half of the sanwhich when it comes to Gi BJJ; if you haven't done it- do it-- you won't regret it, I promise. And then in two years- when you're better than I am (despite me doing it for 8 years lol), you can teach me/us! Last thing (sorry for the long post): if you're wondering "Uh- doesn't your SENSEI teach you?"-- the answer is no, not really. He's a 77-year-old Japanese guy who is (was) a MONSTER at Judo, came here to the USA in the 1960s to attend art school of all things), opened a Judo dojo to make enough to pay the bills and ended up a full time instructor. The problem is that the Japanes don't teach like (good) American teachers do; most of them show a technique (one throw- MAYBE- and most days not even that believe it or not), explain it briefly and then have us "just do it." They (the Japanese) are big on "less talking, more doing" if you get my drift. That works for some people (like a person who can just watch something once and "get" it), but it DOESN'T work for me- at all. Therefore I have to rely on whomever I'm training with to show me a throw or two, with the issues being that 1) They're not teachers- they're fellow students, and 2) Each person has "their way" of doing it- so a guy like me is always in at least two or three minds with each throw, Anyway sorry for the book-length RUclips comment; I just basically in a nutshell wish you taught Judo on here as well. Lastly: if you have done Judo: PLEASE teach me/us what you know. PLEASE! Thanks for the great content Jon; - you are truly one of the top Jiu-Jitsu instructors on planet earth.
Twan 55 Thanks so much buddy my Judo is really lacking but I will try to work on it more over next year and as I feel competent enough I might release some content, or perhaps get someone more experienced with judo than me and get them on the channel and try to organize some of their info in a way I think works well. Really happy that you like my style of teaching.
11 minutes of gold! Any chance at doing one of these for butterfly guard, Jon? Some details on dealing with a standing opponent or closing the distance to aggressively get into favorable positions for the sweep would be great and it seems no one covers these things.
I can cover butterfly for sure as I play it a bit, but I would mix it in more with just an approach to establishing grips when initiating your guard in the start. When you say butterfly you mean how Marcelo plays sitting up or more traditional where you have under hook or over hook and sweep the guy over, like Adam Wardzinski?
Don't know if you have addressed passing the DLR guard, but one thing I've been struggling with lately is how to deal with a really deep DLR hook, which can be used to babybolo to the back. We've worked out some things at our academy but I'm wondering what your take on it was. Thanks!
Hi Jon Thomas, could you do an overview video on reverse de la riva? (Or, if you think that doesn't make sense because rdlr is not a guard in the same way as dlr, could you do a video in which you explain that?)
Can you address the back step? I keep ending up with the passer sitting on my chest facing my feet and then I am defending the submission instead of implementing deep DLR/berimbolo attacks.
ERIC WILLIAMS are they backstepping while you are in DLR or when you sit up for single leg grip? If it’s while you are in DLR you should be able to anticipate and grab there hip and go for a bolo.
Show more of what your actual moves are from those positions. The foundation concepts are great but was looking to see more actual move combinations in this video so overall didn’t really get much out of this
Have not seen one of your videos that I wasn’t able to pull something functional out of. Thank you man.
By far the best BJJ instructor.
Thanks so much! Appreciate it a ton!
I watched this video a year ago when it came out. And here I am watching it again. Thanks Jon.
This is a great video and love the format of showing all the grips, sweeps, etc. all together so we can know the chains and options from the position. Please more of these!

Victor Dos happy you like the videos! Hope training is still going well for you
Instablaster...
This is one of the best bjj videos I've ever watched. Keep it up!
You have a very slick way of explaining concepts. This is rare. Thanks so much man.
Love it man! Your teaching approach is a perfect fit for my learning style 👌
Thanks for putting the guard into concept! Best de la riva video I’ve found so far
Awesome video. Love the details on the concepts. Very helpful.
This started to make sense to me, I enjoy the approach to the way u teach, similar to my coach
great video. your videos are amazing because you show real competition along with concepts
Wow what a great video. Love the mixed in comp footage
Very very good video. And thank you for this. You really do a great job and it's quite impressive. This is better than some of the videos that I have paid for. Love it 👍
Great video man best way to describe DLR as a concept really helpful
Amazing stuff! It's starting to work well for me. Great Seminar in Toronto! Hope you are back again soon.
Great vid, especially the idea of peppering it with comp footage. It's gold, Jerry, gold!

Gold jerry 😂
holy crap this video is incredible. this is exactly what I needed to understand the landscape of the position. and give me goals and reasons for my actions. Thank you so much.
Love your explanation to give the framework. THIS is teaching.
Great video! Please do one for shin to shin guard
Excellent video. More of these guard studies would be awesome.
A purple belt in my club mentioned the other day how no one in the club really does De La Riva and so I was like... I must learn more* so here I am. Thanks, Jon!

No problem buddy happy to help.
Great overview it would be nice to go into deeper detail on each of these positions
Great video! And the reference clips was good as well. If you can do a video for Shin on Shin that would be nice.

Like saying.. “I play Triangle guard”😝.. he’s funny without even trying and at the same time makes so much sense.
11 minutes of gold! Any chance at doing one of these for butterfly guard, Jon? Some details on dealing with a standing opponent or closing the distance to aggressively get into favorable positions for the sweep would be great and it seems no one covers these things.

When you say butterfly you mean how Marcelo plays sitting up or more traditional where you have under hook or over hook and sweep the guy over, like Adam Wardzinski?
yes!!! Butterfly guard retention is not properly covered anywhere!
Thank you, after like 7 years out of BJJ this guard has gave me some problems, I am flexible and everything but find it hard to follow.

nice video! thx!
leadteks thanks happy you liked the video!
Brilliant
😍😍😍
Sometimes a hear my knee cracking a little when I try to put the De la Riva hook. Especially when the hook is not too deep.
Plzzz make a De La Riva series
thats what I need
Hi Jon Thomas, could you do an overview video on reverse de la riva? (Or, if you think that doesn't make sense because rdlr is not a guard in the same way as dlr, could you do a video in which you explain that?)
Bom dia!
Videos ótimos, gostaria se possível colocar legenda pra Portugues . Grato
muy bueno

Hnnnnggggg....Jon Thomas so hot right now.
Hi, should I practice this as a white belt? Or should I stick to the bread and butter stuff? Thanks
Passing sequence from these positions please...
could you show some defense from the knee cut when playing dlr
Show more of what your actual moves are from those positions. The foundation concepts are great but was looking to see more actual move combinations in this video so overall didn’t really get much out of this
I believe Master De La Riva plays cross sleeve because he believes removing ankle control in the worst thing that can happen in DLR.
now tell us how to DESTROY IT!
God half that stuff passes (see what I'm doing here) over my head
yoyoyoyoyooyoyoyoyoyo
i play the tap guard
Plus if learning bjj for irl, why would we do this or open guard in general lol.
Best way to stop dela riva is to footlock the shit out of them.
Bolo
Wouldnt you just bust your knees doing this. All they have to do is put weight on it
Please use different gi colours next time😬
blue belt that doesn't know how to tie his belt..... ?!
The instructor's pants are too short. This is not correct. It puts this opponent at a disadvantage.
Just painful to watch...
