Whoa, nice! Thanks for the details. That part where you explain WHY you do it is the best for me and some people. You put your knee to close the gap, I never thought of it that way.
Dude, super helpful! Especially the details on when to active post and when not, as well as how to prevent the lasso in the end. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Awesome video as usual; but please lower the audio on the tournament clips! Always get a nice jump scare when I'm wearing headphones or trying to keep speaker audio lower at night. The audio in the tournaments is like 500% louder than the instructional.
How do you deal with reverse de la riva while knee cutting??? please maybe address this in one of your videos, love your work thanks for the great content.
Eddie the Foot I was just told the same I’m going to fix that on next video. I’m new to editing, so thats clearly my next lesson. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for this Jon. I've been working the knee slice with an underhook to pass the De La Riva guard recently (Lo style). I get rid of the hook and stuff the leg no problem, but when I try to slice, a lot of the time they get that knee shield in. How are you and Lo preventing that? I find that it's difficult to dig for the underhook but keep the elbow tight at the same time, if you know what I mean? Are you just twisting your hips or something? Thanks!
10:21 Jon, do you ever find that it can be really tough to push that leg behind if they're putting up a lot of resistance trying to either bring in the lasso or just pulling their leg up in a knee-to-chest motion? Any tips to help break down some of that resistance to push the leg back behind you?
dn a If you are controlling the leg with your right hand it should be impossible for them to lasso, unless they broke your grip. As far as getting the knee out of the way centering them up with your knee should make that pretty easy to do. I will cover that in a video specifically on dealing with the knee shield in depth. Thanks!
I am hurting Serg with it, which is fun, but my detail work is not where it should be. All is well here, tell Alec I said hi and look forward to when one (or both) of you return.
craigdanielmaceacher Two reasons 1. It makes it easier to drop your knee in that opening between the elbow and knee which is where you want to pin your hip. It helps you avoid reverse dlr as well. 2. When going at that angle if you axe your shin down first you will crush your partners balls sometimes. That will upset your partner for sure.
You can’t knee cut worm. It is literally designed to counter that pass. Please continue telling people to try and knee cut through lapel guards with a split stance. Lapel players dream right there lol
The knee cut isn’t breaking the ring worm position it’s just a set up to a half guard position that breaks the position. There is video of it being used by Leandro Lo in competition and working in the video, You are probably doing something wrong, make sure you aren’t trying to finish the pass with the knee cut pressure you need to switch to half after you enter.
Adding the competition footage to emphasize your points is an amazing idea! Really helpful!
Yes, love this part as well!
yeah its rare when someone backs it up

Jon, can you show the variation with the face smash you destroyed me with?
John Stevens ahahah yeah I can buddy! Hope all is well back in savannha. I’ll show the face crank sometime soon.
I am hurting Serg with it, which is fun, but my detail work is not where it should be.

Hi do you have a technique to break out of the worm guard- thanks.
timeafter time I do for sure!
Will get to those sometime soon. You can message me on IG or Messenger if you want a quick short video for help.
Jon Thomas is the Stone Cold Steve Austin of youtube bjj
What do you mean by "I lift my foot, don't drop your shin first" (10:08)? Why is dropping your shin first bad?
craigdanielmaceacher Two reasons
1. It makes it easier to drop your knee in that opening between the elbow and knee which is where you want to pin your hip. It helps you avoid reverse dlr as well.
2. When going at that angle if you axe your shin down first you will crush your partners balls sometimes. That will upset your partner for sure.
SO THATS WHY !!! My team partners are going to love this.
