    A superbly clear explanation of the procedure. I came here looking for bmw 1 series n47 tensioner replacement advice, but this was very helpful even if on a transverse n47. Thank you.

    The water pump on the N47 is driven by the serpentine belt and not the timing chain and is fairly easy to replace. The high pressure fuel pump is driven by the chain, it won’t need replacing unless it’s faulty before hands.

    Thanks for the video, I have an N47N Engine so same as this but its mounted sideways as its a rwd 2 series, Its got a slight startup rattle to it now so im assuming after a good 110,000 miles the tensioner is shot. I will be replacing it for the sake of £60 its well worth a go.

    Mine sounds exactly like that (before noise) so might be worth me changing the tensioner first. Only 64000 miles on a 12 year old car.

    How many miles have you guys got on your 1.6 n47? I have 174k on the original cam chain and tensioner, there’s a similar noise as shown in the video for 2-3 seconds and then it sounds fine, I’ll change the top tensioner after watching this, I change the oil every 6-7k miles and don’t push it hard so hopefully it will last me a couple more years without any big bills

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  5 месяцев назад

      Mark, approximately 120k from memory on the original timing gear. The noise has come back from time to time so might need to try another stiffer tensioner or bite the bullet and do the timing gear. Avoiding that big bill is the objective, but obviously things are wearing so its a real difficult balance, regards Damian,

    Hi, great video! Ive a 2016 toyota avensis with the 1.6 n47 engine but the hydraulic lifters on the opposite side to the chain have been ticking the last 2 years but slowly become worse. I was going to just replace all 16 rocker arms and lifters. I read up that its recomended to remove this tensioner to release the tension from the top chain so the top sprocket can be unbolted from the cam. Any advice before I take this on? You seem to know a bit about n47's 😂😂🙈

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  6 месяцев назад

      @eamokearney, Sorry, don't know a lot about these engines. However, the oil pump is connected to the timing chain lower socket. Hence the opposite side hydraulic lifters are furthest away, more oil ways and less pressure. Must likely oil not getting to that end of the engine effectively hence noisy lifters. Might be worth investigating the oil pump and removing carbon deposits. Just a though, good luck with your investigations, regards Damian

    I had the same slight rattle on start up on my x3 n47, only 2-3sec's, I changed the old tensioner for the new type and its been quiet ever since, change oil twice a year with millers EE Performance C3 5w-30 and it runs great.

      Andy, seems to be a common 1st remedy for chain rattle on these N47 engines. Doesn't work for everyone, glad it worked for you, regards Damian

      I tried that oil in my N47 and it didn't like it at all. sounded rough as a badger. drained it and replaced with magnatec 5w30 and was smooth running. maybe it was a dodgy batch, not sure. (that was this year too).

    • @ODRModurol
      @ODRModurol  9 месяцев назад +1

      Mihajlo, you don’t need to lock the timing as this isn’t directly affected. It’s just the tension on the chain that will improve and not the chain position. Hope that helps, regards Damian

    Hello my friend, I have the same engine and I had a litle bit of rattle then I decided to replace the tensioner as well, however with the new upgraded tensioner I note that I can hear the rattle even more, I even went for a drive around 2 km and came back and still the same, I was afraid and then decided to put back the old one and filled it with new oil and the rattle disapeard but I didnt drive the car since then to say that if the rattle will come back. is there anything related to the new one that maybe I did wrong? or should I drive more in order to get oil inside the new tensioner?

      Hi I've had the same. The old tensioner has more travel than the new one. I need someone to give me the length of the new tensioner as in this video so I can be sure it's long enough to take up the slack. I know what size I need but none are for sale with a length listed.
