  • This is a How to Photograph Squirrels guide. I capture incredible images of woodland wildlife. Woodpeckers, squirrels and nuthatches to name a few.
In brief, I've seen Paul's pictures from his hides and they were so impressive I contacted him to arrange a meetup. I'm so glad I did...
A few weeks ago I met up with photographer Paul Fowlie at Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales. Paul owns hides nearby where you can photograph your typical woodland wildlife. I've purposefully played this down a bit. I expected a good day's photography but I certainly didn't expect to be blown away as much as I was...
The day started off with a brief hello and handshake as they do. A few minutes drive and we arrived at Paul's hides. For now, forget about the wildlife for a second. The location is a woodland photographer's dream' what an incredible place! Then, within minutes, I was transported into a childlike state. Not only was I in an incredibly picturesque woodland location... but there were amazing animals everywhere.

I could go on but I'll let my excitement shine through in the video.
This is a real 5-star experience!
A huge thank you to Paul for entertaining me for the day.

I can confirm Paul is an excellent host and the reflection hide is just awesome, I did the jump and wall as well just pre-focus and hit the shutter button on the jump my A7III at 10 fps achieved one or even two shots with each jump the cheeky scamps even came into the hide. The next time I visit Paul will be the Little Owl hide !

Thank you for putting this up last year Gary, as a result of watching it (although I mistakenly told Paul I had seen the video on Simon Baxters channel, Doh!) I had my day with Paul yesterday and apart from being an amazing experience for somebody who doesn't do wildlife I got fabulous photos too thanks to Paul . Can thoroughly recommend it too.

Right, after watching this excellent video I immediately contacted Paul and booked myself onto his Red Squirrel day. I thought I was a reasonably good wildlife photographer. Being completely self-taught I arrived and met Paul. A thoroughly decent guy, great company and he showed me how to use my camera properly!! Got probably the best photos I’ve ever taken. Immediately booked myself onto another of his workshops (badgers). If you are into wildlife and like to spend a day sat in a hide, with zero phone signal! Paul is amazing. Cheers Mike

I can’t believe you have only seen a Woodpecker on one occasion, I have seen scores of them but I have only ever seen one Red Squirrel in my life and that was over 40 years ago. To capture one is on my bucket list, they are adorable. I have been following you for over three years now Gary and this has to be one of the most enjoyable Vlogs you have produced to date. Landscapes change but they are always there, wildlife is elusive and it’s so satisfying to capture it. The leaping Squirrel shots were top draw 👌👍 Thanks Paul for inviting Gary so he could share his experience 👍

Great video - I enjoyed it. I photograph wildlife almost exclusively and would love to book a session at this place because there are no red squirrels in my area. I'll need to plan it because there's a fair bit of travel involved for me, but if we make a long weekend of it then it's possible. There's nothing "wrong" with baited shots or with using paid hides, although they do attract some negative comments in certain quarters. Provided the wildlife comes to no harm and there's minimum disruption then as long as you declare a baited/paid hide shot for what it is, it's a perfectly valid way to work. Looks like you had a great time.

Reds are only found in a few areas of the UK. The pesky Grey being more common in general. However if you live in the South of England there is a colony at Brownsea Island in Poole harbour. A good time to go is around October when they start foraging for food to store over winter. Reds are just beautiful and Gary you've done a great job and been very lucky to see these wonderful creatures.

Gary excellent collection of shots there. Very natural pictures, ISO not a problem from what I could see. And another genre under your belt, I wonder what next week will fetch.
What a set up Paul has created. I’m just surprised that the squirrels looked so slim 😂

You'd think they'd be real porkers. He feeds them that much most days 😁😁

Wow, that's such an amazing location. Fantastic images Gary. I've never seen a squirrel go in the water and we have so many different squirrel's in my area. Great set up Paul.

WoW Gary, these are fantastic images. I’m not really a Wildlife Photographer but do like to capture things while I’m out and about, living near Rivington it’s a given
