  • Hello and welcome to the fourth episode of evolution of MS-DOS gaming.
    We are in 1985 now.
The jump in quality was, once again, evident - with some EGA games being released as well (like Donald Duck's Playground and King's Quest 2).
Quite a few games also aged well, like Silent Service, Winter games, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego and aforementioned Donald Duck's Playground, to name just a few.
Have fun and let us know in the comments if you think of any games we might have missed.

Those were funny times! So many games per year, so many experiments with new things! And mastery of programming to squeeze more from PC by tricks.

KQ2 was so ahead of everything out there at the time. It looks so primitive now, but Sierra was really pushing the cutting edge in their day. What a big year with so many classics released. Carmen Sandiego, F-15, Silent Service, KQ2, and even Ultima IV! I played the hell out of Silent Service 2 and it was a long time before anything really better came about. And Ultima IV on the NES was honestly one of the best RPGs on the system with an open world right from the very start.

THO, Ultima IV on the Sega Master System was much better :)

The C64 was the king back then. But i also liked the sierra adventure games on the pc back then.

You can see the PC coming on leaps and bounds as the graphics and gameplay are really improving.

Agreed. Improvements in gfx and programming (playability) are evident. It's gonna be only "up" from now I suppose.

Yes, but still 4 awful colors (cyan/magenta/black/white) and terrible bleeping sounds. It's kind of weird, compared to other computers of the time.

I really don't understand on why companies didn't make third party GPUs and sound cards & upgrades only Tandy did it others simply just waited for ibm to release stuff

Cost and not wanting to be perceived as a game machine. Most it pros laughed at Tandy for instance. I do agree with you though. IBM was in business though not games.

@@jkeelsnc But the ibm pc was made with something akin to open source so that means theoretically anyone can make upgrades to it but like i said almost no one made their own hardware for ibm pc which is a shame considering the endless capabilities it could have had

    • @jkeelsnc
      @jkeelsnc Год назад +1

@@JasperTedVidalTale you are right. Someone could even take the Vera nodule from the commander X16 and make an 8 bit ISA card with it that would work in an IBM PC or compatible.

@@jkeelsnc I wish someone could go back in time to announce saying "Hey you can make your own upgrades to the ibm pc you don't have to be stuck with cga & ibm pc speaker"

@@JasperTedVidalTaleExactly. I did always wonder why someone didn’t make a new card that was backward compatible with CGA but had more colours, hardware scrolling, hardware sprites, raster interrupts and an on board GI AY series sound chip on it. That would have been nice. The Tandy 1000 graphics and sound were an improvement but still no hardware assisted scrolling, sprites, and raster interrupts.

It seems that the graphics have improved Along with most computers at the time; I didn't play the games, I was a console boy. I'm looking for a PC that plays games, that don't take too much processing power, and it would be nice to play them.

Če misliš na DOS, potem kakšen Wizardry 7 in podobne RPG-je. Tudi avantur (v stilu Kings Questa v tem filmčku) se lotim. V bližnji prihodnosti imam plan odigrati Space Quest 3.
