The Panasonic S1H II needs to compete to Canon R6 Mark II (4k@60p uncropped), Canon R5 Mark II (8K recording), Nikon Z6 II (RAW recording, 6K recording, 4k@60p uncropped), Nikon Z8 (8K recording, RAW), Sony FX3 (Low Light, great PDAF). This is a more competive market that push Panasonic to come with a new customized sensor and not out the shelf Sony sensor with 4k@60p cropped. The gap with Sony, Nikon and Canon is closing. This are not good sign: - No 8K news - Standard Sony sensors off the shelf with 4k@60p cropped and high rolling shutter - No RAW recording. Panasonic is in a difficult situation. With their small marketshare under 5% this points that not many bodies are sold, which make a customized stacked sensor is not profitable. They have to sustain 2 incompatible systems like m43 and FF L-mount.
No 8K recording is a good sign!! Nobody needs that at the moment. 6k@120fps open gate would be much better. Way more important than everything is: 1. Dynamic range 15 (14 usable) 2. Codecs, bitrates, color depth 3. Rolling shutter 4. Auto Focus Everything else Panasonic is already great at.
I just hope they avoid the current trend of ultra-high resolution with a plasticky/digital look and triple-base ISO. Here’s my wishlist: - 6K resolution (more than enough; honestly, even a solid 4.6K would suffice). - Rolling shutter under 10ms. - OLPF - Internal BRAW. - 4K at 120fps and 6K at 60fps with no crop. - Internal 32-bit float audio. - Dual CFexpress Type B slots. - Same or better dynamic range. - An organic image with plenty of detail (no excessive internal noise reduction or artificial sharpness). - Autofocus as good as or better than the S5IIX. - Stabilization on par with or better than the S5IIX. - Internal ND filters (a dream feature, though probably unrealistic for this form factor).
Still shooting on my Lumix S1H. It still works so well but I am ready for better. Better auto focus, better rolling shutter, 4k 120fps or 6k 60fps, anamorphic 60fps, and internal RAW video. Simply a camera that can compete with Canon and Sony.
As a filmmaker, I use Panasonic cameras for years, but I'm disgusted with them not doing an Ambassador programme for UK filmmakers, disgusted. Instead they would rather support RUclipsrs!
