  • The Panasonic S5ii is all the rage with phase detect autofocus. As a committed long term Panasonic user while i'm excited for the improvements there's a lot more Panasonic has to offer over the competition and the S1H is proof of it.

    Man I love the S1h. Have this cam since December 2022. Had the gh5 two years and the S5 one year. Now the S1h and the S5. Amazing camera amazing colors. I love the level of image you can archive with the S1h. I don't use often AUTOFOCUS, MOSTLY manual. I do commercials and a lot of Video Production. The image is better as the S5. Would you recommend the S1H for starting in the professional level? I‘m torn between the GH5(s) and S1H, I could afford both, but I don‘t know if the S1H would be too much at the beginning ?

      Between S1H & gh5s I’d go s1H every day of the week. But! Given that the S5iix is out, I’d take a look into that as the autofocus is super useful. (My views on autofocus have changed quite a bit in the past year) could combo with a S5ii. Depending on what you’re planning on shooting that would likely cover everything.

      @@Jake_203 s1h will be at the end better and more Prof. If you dont need everything right now like a big rig and all lenses. Go for the S1h. The gh5s is small and light weight and all. But in the end of the day you want a good low light camera as well.

    That's a really very clear, substantive look at what the camera is at its core. Nice to see that you, without wanting to be popular, get to the heart of things.
    In the end, it always comes down to the question of why you just don't use Vanice, Arri and other thick boards to make money with film.
    The first point is the revenue a client is willing to place with a service provider. Trust, awareness and reputation...
    The second is transportation volume and weight. If you can generate a noise-free image with excellent rolloff at 4000 ISO, I simply need a lot less primary light. It remains with color accents and hairlight. This turns a truck into an F150.
    The third point is the image with a high dynamic range and a superb rolloff. With the right optics, a filmic image is created. This is not what the customer paid for and ordered, but he is happy to see exactly that. And subsequently finds the resulting film good and a recommendation to others.
    All of this opens up to me with the Panasonic Sh1.

      I appreciate it! Yeah i’m a nerd for tech and love to dive into the details and sometimes there are things that get overlooked and for me the S1H is one of the most underrated cameras. For 24fps work it’s stellar, so I wish it had better high frame rates? Sure! But it solves 95% of the problems I face without too much drawback. And those 5% the FX3 solves which I’m fortunate to have both. IMO Panasonic has some of the best straight out of camera colors on the market.

    Thanks for the video, Brandon. I like your style. This video was more like a "confessional" instead of trying to hype people up. I am curious as to how you are doing NOT using autofocus during weddings though, because it seems like being able to do focus pulls or tracking the bride and groom walking down the aisle would benefit from good continuous autocross. (I have tried pulling focus on my S1 and Panasonic 24-105 f/4 while shooting handheld and unfortunately I was just too jittery).

    • @brandongoodyear2468
      @brandongoodyear2468  Год назад +1

      Great question! I think it all comes down to the overall style of the wedding films you're delivering. I should have mentioned it in the video, my go to setup with the S1H is a 7" small hd focus 7 for easier manual focusing. For weddings I use this kit and take off my on camera mics. the style of wedding films we deliver are mostly 60fps slowed down (I shoot 98% of the day on the 24mm 1.4 to overcome the 4k/60 crop) as a solo operator with one camera I have to get quite a bit of shot variety to tell the story. I rarely am tracking a subject in a difficult situation, though I have also been shooting with manual focus for close to 10 years so that muscle memory comes in handy.
      If you're on the native Panasonic 24-105 there are 2 settings to note. set the manual focus to linear & set your focus rotation (I like 270) it gives you way finer control over the manual focus (I've rented the 24-70 a few times and absolutely loved the manual focus experience on it)
      All this being said! I got the FX3 last july and used it for the remainder of our weddings in 2022 & plan on using it for this season as the autofocus allows me to shoot way faster. I still pair it with the S1H which I use as a ceremony camera on tripod.

Out of curiosity - and I am reluctant to ask this because I want to avoid the type of brand war that rages through the comments - does the S5 II / S5 IIX appeal to you? I am sure the FX3 is an awesome camera, and I know lens selection is terrific. Just that, I've used Sony aps-c cameras in the past and the ergonomics and such leave me wanting. (I understand that FX3 is full frame, has new menus, and more buttons than something like my Sony a6500 / a6300, and a6000 cameras.)

    • @brandongoodyear2468
      @brandongoodyear2468  Год назад

      Haha you got it! And if the S5iix was out last year I 100% would have bought that. The biggest appeal for me with it is the ability for Canon lenses to autofocus incredibly well. The Sony was realistically a reactionary purchase based on the amount of event work I was getting last year. It also kinda worked out well to get started on RUclips too.
      I had one wedding last year that I’m thankful for the FX3, so I’m probably going to hang on to it for a couple years at least.

      You’re definitely right on not noticing a hide difference on the exporting side at 16bit 44.1, but video has been at least 48k since dvd providing for better sync. The additional dynamic range from 24bit and the higher frequencies that can be captured at 48k & 96k (96k being how pretty much all professional sound effects are recorded) give it a noticeable difference in the final mix, I’ve also tested it using my older rode video mic NTG through an xlr adapter to get the higher quality recordings with noticeable difference.
      I also agree that mic choice is where you’re going to see much bigger differences too.

      @@brandongoodyear2468 I’m a photographer and for me the biggest issue with m4/3 cameras was dynamic range and noise in low light. I switched over for the video which is was great but the low light is really a big problem. So I’m looking to get a s5 II the autofocus will be a major upgrade too for photography and video.

      Oh yeah! You’ll definitely appreciate the low light performance with full frame. Yeah m4/3 is a fantastic video format for quite a bit, but when it comes to photo full frame or apsc is the way to go.

    Do you have to apply a rec 709 conversation lut first, then add your lut to how you want things

    • @brandongoodyear2468
      @brandongoodyear2468  Год назад +1

      Yeah, most creative LUTS are rec709 based (I want to make a video on rec709 because it’s a old color standard for 1080p footage, not reflecting the higher dynamic range or color of 4k & hdr capture) so if you apply a creative lut directly to the log footage it won’t have the desired look (unless the lut has the r709 conversion built into it)

    I think the S5II is dope (already got my hands on a demo one) but it is not doing everything that the S1H does.
