Been passing through a tough time lately. Your video gave me a moment of joy and made me feel a little like myself again. Thanks. Keep up the good work!
I upgraded to a G9ii from a GX9 as I really wanted the extra MP bump and I'm mainly a still photography shooter, rather than video maker, so while I did consider upgrading to a S5ii to have a FF system, the fact that I have close to 20 M43 lenses made better sense for me to keep within the M43 universe. I have not been disappointed with the G9ii, and it does more or less everything I want it to, especially quality portrait photography. The only thing I don't use it for, is landscape photography, which I usually use my OM-1 Mark ii (due to the really effective in-camera Live ND and Live GND Filters). While the small form factor of my GX9 (which has a handheld grip add-on to make it more comfortable to hold) makes it more convenient for travelling, I don't find the G9ii's dimensions to be outrageously large. It's still smaller than my ageing Lumix FZ2000 Bridge Camera, which is like wearing a brick around my neck!
Thanks for this over all review.I share your positive opinion after using my g9ii for six monthd now. Great image quality, features and customization options.A real joy..
In the United States the difference between the Panasonic lumix G9ii and the GH7 is $200. Since the G9ii is 95% of the GH7 it makes better sense spending the two hundred dollars to get the active cooling, 32 bit float recording and recording upgrades found only in the GH7. I agree with you that the G9ii is an excellent camera and if I owned one, I wouldn't get the GH7 but since I don't... The extra $200 is well worth the step up the latter. As always your video reviews do a great job of informing as well as teaching. We all look forward to your next video with anticipation. We done Shane
Thanks, Matti. That's the same spot I took you guys to, but with water in the area as opposed to the weird low tide we saw that day. haha. I am thinking a bit more about my photos now trying to get some foreground framing etc. :)
Great review. I love mine. original g9 was my all time favourite camera and I'm blown away by this upgrade. Used to live in Perth, but now in this cold, damp part of canada, I'm not too worried about the overheating.
Hi Shane…your content has been invaluable to me as a 70 yr old guy with a new G9II. Question: Should I be shooting 4K 120fps for slow motion or should I learn to use the S&Q feature? My prior cameras would only shoot 60fps which I would add to a 24fps timeline. Thanks, as always, for your time and support. Jim
S&Q slows the footage down in camera so your 120p footage will be recorded at your native frame rate of (25 or 30p). You loose audio with S&Q but its great for not having to slow down clips later.
I’ve had the G9II for a couple of months now, and just got my S5IIX. I love the G9II coming from my long used G9 but I wanted the option for lower light capability, hence the S5IIX. It seems to have about a 2 stop advantage and otherwise seems indistinguishable from the G9II image quality wise. Thus far the only advantage that really matters to me is the high ISO performance, but I have to ask myself if the 2 stops is worth the larger lenses?? Of course the shallower depth of field is another advantage, but it’s just not that big a deal to me. Had the advantage of the FF system been only DOF then I would not have gotten the S5, but the two advantages together make it just compelling enough for me. The greatest advantage to the combination of the two is the shared body with almost identical controls and menu. That was genius on Panasonics part!
2 stops alone can be critical yet can be arguably debate if Its really a difference you need BUT 2 stops + 2x times the lights in term of aperture is now unarguable in my opinion, but the best thing having a ff sensor is that you can get into a true MFT setup with a focal reducer, but you can't get a true FF setup with a MFT cause you get only x1.7 equivalent instead of the 2x Meaning you can use a FF in every native lens setup with the correct aperture and focal, but you can't with a MFT, and since G9II is the same size and almost weight the only advantage of MFT is stabilisation, litterally the only one. Please let me know if you find another.
@@DarkTrapStudio There are a few advantages for the MFT all of which of course depend on conditions wherein the lighting is adequate. 1. Higher frame rates, both in photo and video modes. 60 fps with pre as well as 4k 120. Also FHD (1080p) at 300 fps. 2. The crop factor! My PL 100-400 is small compared to a Sigma 150-600 (which comes up 200mm short comparatively). Again, this is assuming better lighting conditions that take into account the two stop difference. I find that I can cleanup iso 3200 on the G9Ii very nicely in LRC and 12800 on the S5IIX. 3. Other aspects such as lens size advantages when travel or hiking are your goals as well as the added front FN button when comparing these two models specifically. I have those two on the G9Ii mapped to front and rear focus assist. Can’t do that with the S5, and it’s very useful when shooting subjects with lots of clutter around them such as birds in branches.
@@DarkTrapStudio Check out the front of the camera, it’s where the difference is. The G9II has two function buttons to the left of the lens (as seen from the front) and the S5II has one. The second button you see on the S5 is the lens mount release, whereas on the G9 the lens release is on the other side, making room for the second function button.
Shane I wanted to ask you since I consider you and expert on Lumix. I was watching a video on G9ii on the CINE D channel called LUMIX G9 II Goes to India. The gentleman said he shoots in 2K 240fps. I was very excited about this but I think he misspoke. It's about 4 minutes in. Did he mis speak and he probably meant 1080? I always thought the CINED channel was a pro channel so I'm surprised. Please let me know. BY the way I watched this video when I first got my g9ii and watched the other day again. Wow. I recommend everyone do the same. I missed a lot of good stuff back then. Now that I know the camera so well the lesson info means so much more. Thank you.
Shane thanks making this video! The only thing that tempts me to get a gh7 over g9ii is the timecode port lol but adding audio timecode is good enough and saves Me some money. When using a monitor I send menus over hdmi since the flip screen is limited in movement. I’m not grabbing the g9ii to record externally so menus on my monitor is great.
I'm a G9 owner and I have only one lens 12-35 2.8. Most of the time I shoot video, so now I have a dilemma: sold an MFT and buy S5 II + one basic lens (maybe 50mm 1.8) pr sold a G9 and get G9 II for great AF? Panasonic users - what do you think?
I am in the same position and after 12 months of pondering I still have no idea what the best solution is! 🤣 I have 10 MFT lenses and I bought the lumix 50mm S f1.8 (because I was convinced I would buy the S5II or S9). The best thing about my procrastination is the prices are dropping, although the G9II being the newer release is still more expensive than the S5II, which makes it difficult to justify! My ideal set up I think is: GX9MkII (doesn’t exist) and S1HMkII (doesn’t exist but is probably more likely to emerge than the GX9MkII)! This hypothetical adds to my conundrum. So I press on with the G9, which remains a gnarly little camera. I have a Canon 5DIII for full frame bokeh duties although interestingly its dynamic range is the same as the G9, if not a little worse. The G9II is even better again, which demonstrates the advances in MFT sensors over the past 5-10 years. As I have a bunch of EF lenses which can be adapted to L mount I’m agnostic on the lens front. The most appealing lens is the new little 18-40mm zoom which is a perfect match for the S9 but that camera has too many compromises for me unfortunately.
Just a technical: on top of the G9ii features, the GH7 has the tilty-flippy screen, active cooling, tally lamps, synchro socket (and other more minor things that come with the chassis), plus internal ProRes RAW HQ, ARRI LogC3 as a paid upgrade, internal 32bit float audio recording (with the DMW-XLR2), RTMP streaming... I still prefer the G9ii though, haha. But I mostly shoot photos, so it makes sense.
Thanks for you insights. Been looking at this for an alrounder and content creation pairing it up with my Oly Pro glass. Might go a dji vlog camera for discreet video but the G9ii seems a great camera. A GX9ii would be great for street usage, pity OM and Panasonic have left their smaller bodies hanging.
Shane, top video mate and great to see a Melbournian on the scene ! 🤜🤛 I shoot junior soccer for my sons club and done some semi pro work with an M50 and a 70-200 and 24-105 lens but wanting to upgrade to a G9II. How do you think the G9II would go for sports/action? My other contender is the Sony A6700 as they're both on great sales. I would record mainly in 4K60, occassionally 4K120 and I love the 5.7K 60fps option on the G9II Keen to hear your thoughts mate ! Cheers
The video features of the G9II are killer especially 4k120 and the higher res modes. For sports photography, I haven’t tested it but it appears to track well for moving subjects in my tests. I can’t really say how well it will perform for that niche as it’s not something I’ve used it in. That said the AF is really good. There’s all kinds of tracking and modes now so it’s a huge upgrade. If you’re talking video for sports it’ll do great if you lock the tracking to a particular person.
It's now a toss up between the S5ii and the G9ii. I can find the S5ii for around $1,600 USD nowadays. The G9ii is selling for about $1,500 on MPB. I currently have the FX30 as my main camera. And it's the first camera I've ever had that I will most likely keep. But, I do miss LUMIX colors and features. Thanks for the commentary.
The S5II is a better A camera than the G9II in the standard frame rates and 6K open gate/vlog looks amazing. The S5II is also better than the FX30 as well in my opinion, as I own that as well). When it comes to all the higher frame rates the FX30 and G9II are both excellent and give the advantage to those over the S5II.
I have the Sony a7IV and last year I picked up a6700, I used to use a G9 but got sick of the pulsing as the old Lumix AF was as bad as Raygun's dancing 🤣🤣 and went to Sony. I think I might sell the 6700 and get the G9II, as I really love the content that you're putting out with it.
Still use the original g9 and honestly, it is a great camera. Great AF (for photos..and fine for video (not all if movement) effective IBIS, but IMO it’s not that light and a bit too big for my needs (hiking). G9ii seems to take a great camera and make it even better! So tempting, but still too large for my needs…now if there was a g100ii or gx10 with many of these features I’m sold. Still, G9ii a wonder. Well done review!
Very helpful video, as usual! Thank you. Can you say how close would the color matching with video be between this and my GH5mark2 cameras, assuming I shot in V-Log on both, or even in the other modes like Natural?
Natural is pretty close with a few tweaks, but VLOG on the G9II looks a lot better. It's come a long way with Dynamic range and color science when shooting in VLOG.
I was thinkin a lot about buying s52x or gh7 . I bought gh7 and i am very surprised how much of an update compared to my gh5 it is. I will skip s5x and wait for s1hii as i hope it will have everything and more my gh7 has. S5 would be too much of a sidegrade to me.
I have just realised that the PL 200mm 2.8 (dream lens!!) only costs €1,500 here in Germany (at the absolutely trustworthy established camera shops). From a photographic point of view, the G9ii makes sense, especially for telephoto applications (if you're not already fully invested in MFT). I don't know how long this price reduction has been around, but it makes the 200mm €170 cheaper than its slower 50-200mm zoom brother. Does anyone know any reasons for this big price reduction? Will there perhaps be a new edition of the Pana-Leica tele prime? Anyway, the combination of the G9ii with the 200mm should be a very tempting option for anyone interested in sports and wildlife.
Ah, in the meantime I have seen that the 200mm is no longer in production. This was already communicated in November 2022. Now the remaining stock is probably being sold off and the price has apparently been around €1,500 for six months.
Great update, are you using ND filters for your vlogging test? I know everyone says you should have the 180 degree rule for motion blur but I think this may affect the e-stab and how effective it is. I know the gopros/action cameras struggling with stabilisation when the shutter is too low and most say to keep above 1/200th so I assume this works the same way? Have you done any tests like that?
@@PhotoBooth72 a lot of wide lenses don't play well with ND filters either, so you might potentially get some vignetting with them (depending on the type). :)
Outside of autofocus, would you say the image quality for videos of the G9MII is the same as the GH6? My plan was to save up for a GH6. I know i don't want to spend the extra for the GH7 for marginal image quality improvements and improved auto focus. Just wondering about this G9II since the price difference between it and the GH6 is around 500 on mpb
Sir Thanks a lot for Wonderful long term Review on G9 Mark 2 , sir can you also do review on GH5 Mark2 vs G9 Mark 2 , as I am getting confused which to buy as both are Hybrid camera
If you have the extra money, the G9 Mark 2 would be a better option. Has the full Vlog, more highspeed recording codex, better autofocus. The GH5 Mark 2 is nice for what it is, and I'd only recommend it if you find a great deal used.
The other comment is correct. The G9II is a better overall camera for both video and photo but the GH5 II will be more reliable shooting video for long periods of time in the sun as it's harder to overheat.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy , Sir Thanks a lot🙏 for the clarity, even I wanted G9 mark 2 , as I felt that it could do both photo and vedio projects which would cover all the geners of photography and vedio graph
You been watching a certain Canadian with all those long range shots? LOL, they look great though, always good compression on those 50~mm on the m43 system.
G9ii for me sadly came with some minor issues. 1. Overheating issues. several times, even in 1080p stopped working on power thermal max. 2. the natural profile that everyone uses oversaturate the skin tones and generally there is colors bleeding in the reds. my workaround is to set up a lut and playing with it with the Saturation and its ok. purchased at amazon new condition.

G'day mate Totally love your videos and advice. Can you tell me if the G9II has 'frame Marker? Cheers from John
Yes it does
Yep!
None, I am just shooting in aperture priority mode. For vlogging, no one is going to care about shutter speed (from an audience perspective).
@@GeekyNerdyTechy makes sense, I will give it a try that way, less hassle too!
No, G9ii has about a full stop more DR since DR boost is available from ISO 500 vs 2000 on the GH6. It also gets rid of the streaking issue.
@@Wildridefilms hmm, this is very helpful, thank you.
I think it was be a nice B cam & wildlife camera. A little pricey though
But Shane, did you stop for ice cream (3:16)? What's a road trip without stopping for ice cream 😃 Great video as always - thank you!
haha. Hopefully next time :). Thanks again.
@@bkickn , Thanks 🙏 a lot for the Support and Clarity .
Shane, @9:14 are you saying that the S5II/X will shoot 4K 120 in the S&Q mode? I can’t get that to work….. what am I missing?
S5II and X don't do 4K 120p - the G9II and GH7 both have this feature.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy That's what I thought, but I swore you said the S5II/X did. I must have mis heard.
what are your best setting for Leica Monochrome?
I just use it as is, but you can adjust it if you need to.
You been watching a certain Canadian with all those long range shots? LOL, they look great though, always good compression on those 50~mm on the m43 system.
Just mixing up the lenses. I don't use the 42.5mm enough anymore and it's a fun one.
Color (skin tone) is much beter on G9II...
it's time to get rid of my G85
Hey! I'm thinking of the same thing
Am I the only one who keeps hearing "GX7" instead of "GH7"?
I did some research into this and it turns out it’s called an accent! Some people in different places have them.
We say H the correct way without the HAY part at the start. 🤣
$1097 right now at BH.
That is such a great price for this!
I've always found the standard profile to be the most accurate to real life.
@@JoeMaranophotography I've tried all the profiles and the issue is still there.
What sort of filming were you doing? I let mine run for over an hour nonstop shooting open gate the other day with no issues at all.
