I love animating 3d in blender and I'm learning 2d but grease pencils main problem I see is that you can't use a lot of brushes only the default grease pencil brushes
Things I learnt about Opentoonz and Toon boom harmony that they both have: • They both have similar hand drawn values in animation •they both have rich art brushes that work with both raster and vector graphics • they both have mesh deformation, can use bezier handle deformation and can do cut-out animation •They have the ability to scan in paper based drawings for pencil tests and digital ink and paint •Have powerful node editors for composting and editing animation with stunning effects produced for the final render Also InspirationTuts2D, Opentoonz also has a timeline and both it and the X-sheet can be used together,Harmony also has an X-sheet but that can only be used with it's timeline to use as a guide when doing rough animation digitally or traditionally.
Thank you for the brilliant sum up Claude! Since we covered both of these nuggets before (mentioning the X-sheet and updates) we decided to focus on other parts this time (especially the scanning part, as we received many questions from our fellow hand-drawing veterans). Feel free to check our previous comparisons and tell us what you think ;)
This is a bit off topic, but I find it interesting that one of toon booms examples featured the web series lackadaisy which got an animated pilot only a few weeks ago
Thank you for making this video its very well put together and easy to understand! Definitely has encouraged me to try learning both programs when i have the time :)
Thank you very much! We're glad that it was helpful and encouraging. We highly recommend you start with Opentoonz if you're a beginner, as it's free and can teach you lots of things nonetheless
Minor differences aside. I think that the key difference is that one is entirely free and the other will cost you over $3000 if you go for the full featured version (potentially more if you go for the subscription model). Which boils down to OpenToonz being for small indie projects and hobbyists, with Harmony being for professional studios and people who have money to burn.
Yeah they are teaching us to use toon boom in school cause that's the industry standard but open toonz is without a doubt more affordable option and if a studio like gibli uses it exclusively then it must be pretty darn good
ToonBoom for Linux had been stopped years ago. Only the server version exists (for project resource management etc).. Actual drawing/animating, you need the client: which again is non existant for Linux anymore. Also, most things you show/talk about for Harmony, is for the premium version, so it's important to state that. You have Toonz and OpenToonz, they differ not only in pricepoint, but also in features and support options. Toonz is used by studios, while opentoonz is the light version (open sourced), that is mostly used by enthousiasts.
Harmony crashes too. OpenToonz is stable as any of the best software some might have to connect their GPU on high performance some may have cheap hardware that's not good enough for it this is usually the case.
OT is quite rigid and has to be utilized within certain rules of workflow. It's build from a mass-production point of view, in the original toonz there was one license for directing the production, which sat hard on the colour pallette, bulk rendering and post-production. Then you had a license for drum scanning with the Epson 3000 and the GTS, and down the line several licenses for ink'n paint. It was never meant or build to be a one person workstation. So when get to play around with this factory it'll likely crash quite alot until you get to terms with the intended workflow. I'm amazed by the power of this setup, which I find like an trustworthy workhorse, behold in AVE 😅 it's just so fantastic it's for free. Thanks alot to Divideo and Dwanko
Unfortunately a few errors in the video: The lifetime subscription pricing you mention is actually an annual subscription so you have to pay $1000 for Harmony Premium each year. The smaller versions are less expensive.
Thanks for the feedback Joel! By the time of making the video we realized indeed that we haven't made it explicit about that detail, our goal was to briefly stress the fact that there are 3 different plans but to focus more on the tools and features. We'll make sure to be more thorough in our upcoming videos ;)
You got free vs like a million dollars plus a forever price just keep up-to-date! And when they both still give professional grade level outcomes you can't really compared them the choice is simple! Opentoonz is all your ever need! I used both in the past but boy what a money pocket burning toonboom really is your paying for upgrades that you don't really need or care to want! It be much easier to donate that money to the opentoonz community to get those same features without the pressure! Animators just want to be left alone to animate and not be bombarded with nonsense! Like having someone poke you in the back saying "hey do you want to buy this poke poke" then TBoom has this so called "plans" for you to choose from! Like why can't it be just one plan? Why do you need to pick between standard and premium? Like why do some people get that special treatment while your stuck with basic crap? They could just make it one price one software for all! Then it's a subscription base too like your never own it and your be renting it for life! This why you don't fall for this opentoonz is your man! And if it isn't than you can make it so! It's open source you can modify it to what you need it for all the money your end up paying for Tboom could be invested in paying a programmer to give you those features in opentoonz then share the glory and in making it the most powerful thing on earth! Just like blender is today!
I can make any paid program free, but I need to do that now open toons Better than the program now, drawing in it is free and simple, and the animation depends on the artist, while the program has no relation at all to the project. From my point of view, the best program from the house of animation programs are two programs, which are (open toons,,Moho )😊😊😊😊😊
It's outstanding indeed! I personally like the opponent of this comparison Opentoonz because of the GTS scanning system.. I transitioned from drawing on paper my whole like to digital art software, so it has been very helpful in my case. Thanks for the feedback! We'd love to see those animated short films of yours ;)

and through another reply from this channel made to me in a previous conversation. It's amazing what you can find out about channels and people behind them if you pay a little bit of attention.
I think that OT is by far the fastest tool for colouring wast amount of cells. Many studios uses it for exactly this. Where they might do the line work and post in others.
I can't even open Opentoonz after installing it because it doesn't support my mac OS X. I need that software because I draw my animations on paper and shoot it to a computer.
Toon Boom Harmony, all the way. You can't recover the time you loss when the program suddenly crash. But my wallet is the one letting me chose, so OpenToonz.
If you ignore the fact that Grease Pencil exists, I kind of consider OpenToonz to be the Blender of 2D animation software.
Well considering that studio ghibli had a part in it's development and they're known as some of the best. I'll have to agree
I love animating 3d in blender and I'm learning 2d but grease pencils main problem I see is that you can't use a lot of brushes only the default grease pencil brushes
Same, and I consider toon boom to be the cinema 4d of 2d software
With everything going subscription based, we need to toss some coin and become backers to these opensource tools.

Money doesn't matter in animation
opentoonz is used by a real studio
@@godslayerreginaldby quite a lot of studios. One of the most popular being gibli, that actually helped add a lot of features to the app

Great comparison! I think it would be worth mentioning that Opentoonz does crash quite often. I'm not sure how Harmony compares in that way.

Harmony is a nightmare for crashing - does it randomly which considering the cost is unacceptable
