    Tom Bancroft used TVPaint in some episodes of the 1st season of the Animaniacs revival for Hulu, while most of the episodes in the revival used Toon Boom Harmony such as Snipple Animation & Tonic DNA.

    As a TVPaint user ide say the most major difference between the two is scale. Toon boom is made for thoroughly large productions. Very compartmentalized for teams of people doing specific jobs. It is a more diverse package than TVP with many notable features that make it more suitable for a wider variety of animation styles. Its native vector base nature presents tools that can be non destructive unlike a soley bitmap based application such as tvp. Draw a bad stroke you can go in later and tweak its size and shape. As for Tvpaint, its a purist 2d hand drawn application very well suited for either the independent artist or the smaller production crew. Where toon boom can be production complicated, Tvpaint is down right fun because its complexity is mostly that of what the user makes. Its toolset is diverse and it does indeed have a multiplane camera. In fact the beauty of tvp is the fact its only as complicated as you need it to be. Use it as a flipbook or access its deeper toolsets and managmeny rooms for full out production work. Its being used more and more by japans animation houses as it best adopts to that tradition work flow. Not to mention what ever customizable flow you wish. Little know is that it also supports older photoshop filters. So to sum up. Toon boom is for pro level work. Tvpaint covers from beginners hobbyist independent artists and pro's its whatever the user can get out of him or herself and tvpaint will cover majority of your needs. But which should you buy? I love TVPaint that said most studios use toon boom as it's far more feature diverse, again it's vector based nature makes for non destructive work flow and scalability. Expanded output range and more. TVPaint is no slouch but it could fare well with some of toon booms native features such as vector based tools. Still it's exceeds in fun factor. And naturalistic feel. It's truly traditional made digital.

    If you work in the animation field and have animation quotas to respect every day or week, the vectorial tools of toonboom are a real plus !
    As a frame by frame animator, I struggle a lot with the bitmap system of TVpaint that litterally destroy your drawings when you apply rotation, perspective or scale... What a waste of time, if you need to deliver a clean drawing sequence...
    Easy translation tools lack from TvPaint as well...
    For me, ToonBoom is a more reasonable choice if your film don't need any "arty" feature like oil painting. Vectorial is sooooo handy even for drawings (not only for cut-out)

    • @DraconianRain
      @DraconianRain 3 года назад +8

      Change the antialias setting to smart or best when using rotation, transform etc in the tools properties window. This will stop the destruction of your raster images. Most of the time it's a simple setting changed from default to higher quality.

    • @croumic
      @croumic 3 года назад +4

      @@DraconianRain I dit, it's all set properly. but the quality loss after scale and rotation are still there. It can be otherwise because of the bitmap technology, but still, it looks rougher than photoshop...
      Anyway, I think it's a decent software when you need to do artistic short films, or when you work as a keyframe animator and when your animation is cleaned by a clean up artist afterward.
      In my case, the pipeline of the feature film I'm currently working on is asking the key animator to inbetween and clean their own animation. In that case Tvpaint loses a bit of interest in my opinion.
      Thank you for your advice anyway !

      @@_v_m_ After 7 months of Tvpaint 11 on a feature film. I came to like it, and I learned to go around its flaws.
      I totally agree with you about the "feel". It is pleasant to draw on tvpaint (at a normal zoom) and it has many very cool option.
      But I still find it very unconvinient when used in production with smooth line design. I see that "Primal 2" staff sweats to make such incredible dinosaurs animation, and I can't help myself to think that it would be more confy on Harmony. Same render, less effort. ^^
      Anyway, it's good to have a variety of software, and mix it all ! 😉

    Is banding an issue with TVpaint because it has 8 bit colour depth? It's confusing I've read people saying both yes and no. Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate buying it. I saw on the official forums that TVpaint 12 will have more higher bit colour modes like 16 bit, but who knows when that will release.

      @izzybdoodles Год назад +3

      Hey, it’s been a while since you posted this question, but no one answered and I thought I would give it a shot. Both programs will do frame by frame animation, but if you like more of a painterly style over a graphic one tvpaint is the way to go. For anime, professionals usually animate on paper and then bring it into a free animation program called Toonz. It’s what the ghibli movies were animated in! But if you are a very beginner to animation I might recommend Clip Studio Paint EX. It was the easiest for me to grasp as a beginner

    I had been animating on photoshop and after effects for some time and I found it annoying whenever I wanted to make a single drawing animation either a simple movement to one direction or something with more repetition. Maybe toonboom harmony will give me a great middle ground without having to preplan which element will be animated seperatelly in after effects instead of program such as photoshop which has no animation automations.

      Thanks for the feedback x) rigging can actually be helpful for character animation under certain circumstances, like low budget or tight deadlines (since puppet animation is much faster that the frame-by-frame one, you don't have to redraw the whole character to create movement).
