Oathmark is the best game for a classic fantasy based narrative campaing. Two years ago we run a 5 players campaing, and we created a continent, a dozen of kingdoms, a panteon with all sorts of gods, and a 2.000 years timeline. Everybody painted a 2000-2500 points army, exclusively for the campaign, including undead, humans, halflings, dwarfs. Lots of fun.

As a life long d&d player, i can confirm that storytelling literally is for everyone. I would argue the practise of storytelling is a fundamental human need, as vital to our day to day life as breathing. As far as worldbuilding goes, my personal favourite is the fantasy battles world, pre-AoS. Basically the world depicted in the Total War series. I love that world.

5 Leagues and 5 Parsecs have been my favourite wargame "stumbled across" products of the last few years, and I've become a big fan of Ivan Sorensen's work. Both him and Joseph McCullough speak to the sort of games I like... small scale "adventuring party" size games with a lot of narrative/story
Same. I had been out of “the game” for over a decade before I stumbled into Joe and Ivan’s games. Now I’m printing, painting and playing with some regularity.

And whilst a little generic they are decently robust, GW's stuff, whilst still 'the best', is increasingly suffering from being 'over done' (not everything needs to be drowning in tiny details), and very fine, fiddly parts, some easily broken by an errant paintbrush.
@@martinjrgensen8234 That is true, but there are a few points to consider: 1) Many of them seem to be modeled after their WFB counterparts albeit with less details as the later ones but on pair with the middle phase of WFB minis. Which can be a disadvantage but mustn't. Some like the old school vibes or are at least not scared away by them. 2) Their modularity has a great advantage to modern GW products. At least for me. So one Box of Human Infantry for example will give you 30 models of spearmen, swordsmen or bowmen in any combination. Which can be put together to be more or less dynamic. 3) Their clean look is easier to paint. Especially for those people who don't have much time to fiddle about with intricate details or don't have the necessary skills to. 4) In a rank and flank game which you observe from 1-1,5 meters distance the standard soldier is barly recognisable let alone the details of the miniature. So for me at least it makes almost no difference. In the end it all comes down to preference and price. Me personally, I would like to play a game that is uncomplicated, fun and doen't ruin my bank account. The minis still look decent and can look even better with a proper paint job and that's enough for me.
50E for 1500pts isn't half.... its E60 for 10 scouts, 45E for FIVE of the dwarf gunners for AoS... considering BA 3rd ed is about 120 for a good starter set, infinity army boxes are about E80 for a full 300pts... all for games that are better balanced I think GW might have jump the shark in pricing finally
I love the map! In high school my mates and I were huge into Risk. So we made our own world map on a random planet and then used the risk pieces but remade them to a napoleonic sci-fi setting. Man good memories! Thank you!

Really inspiring! I usually follow random tables less strictly, when I do world building for my RPG prep. But working with some kind of random input is really helpful and your tools cover the process on a more zoomed out level than my usual focus.

I find it fun to keep early names iterations as former names for cities or as how it's called by different factions over time. Real world example like Istanbul/Byzance/Constantinople being quite common.
For Scifi, Traveller has a great universe creation system. From the Sector/Subsector generation (where a simple dice roll shows if a hex has a world in it) to generatung main worlds (more complex system that can express a main workd charactoristic in a Hexadecimal UWP stat line). Add on rules can be used to map a whole system including gas giants, astroud belts and multi star system. If you use the Cepheus System or the Mongoose 1st edition OSR you can get the rules for free.

There's a similar realm building tool for the Old World border prince states in one of the previous versions of WFRPG, too. It's always lots of fun making maps and fitting stuff together.
A different but very cool video. An interesting framework to have a world map evolve over time is the world section of Dungeon World. It's from an RPG system, but basically each location gets specific keywords, and based on the overarching campaign those can change. Ps: the hand drawn maps are a treat
I do like a good world building :) Tolkien was mocked for the shape of Mordor amongst other geology issues, he had the last laugh tho, as they found real world examples. (hi from the wiki rabbit hole) Remember things lead to or imply other things... So a mine will need likely need a pump (eg Laxey Wheel), ore needs to be broken up & processed, then fed into a smelter, so more water wheels ! Then a forge to shape the metal ingots into stuff ! Wheat needs to be stored, ground, baked Mountain passes need a stronghold to control passage, etc. As someone trained to do Technical Drawing (& CAD, both a very long time ago) - "ink" pens, get the ones with a specified size eg 0.5mm, I like clutch pencils for the same reason :)

Really interesting subject. Gave me inspiration to start making new narrative campaign. Did some light digging and Hoeth is pronounced like it looks like it should be: "Ho-Eth". At least based on the total war game series, which we can trust on these things.
This is like the right spark that i was in need! I just found the whole collection of oathmark books 2nd hand and i was trying to understand how to make the campaign less... virtual? Probably I'll use one page rules as my game system, since i want this experience also playable solo and opr has a greater customability (is it a word? Dunno lol😂). I can definitely recommend 5PFH. It has a Firefly/Outer Rim vibe, but I've seen it run with a Starfleet angle. You really get invested in your crew

This is like the right spark that i was in need! I just found the whole collection of oathmark books 2nd hand and i was trying to understand how to make the campaign less... virtual? Probably I'll use one page rules as my game system, since i want this experience also playable solo and opr has a greater customability (is it a word? Dunno lol😂). I could really use my WHOLE collection too 🎉🎉🎉
