How Living on Less Has Given Me So Much More

  • Why I'm grateful to have low income. Plus benefits of being single or having a busy doctor or military spouse. These include: knowledge, creative kids, and self-confidence. I've learned how to do things myself like change a flat. My kids are creative and happy with simple toys. I've become stronger as I've had to do hard things like experience a hurricane. Plus other pros and cons of being poor.

I absolutely love how you talk about being poor. My Children never knew we were poor when i was a single parent raising 4 kids under 10 years old, i always cooked with one ingredient foods, homemade, no computer 🖥 only a landline 📞 telephone, 1 tv not color only black and white, no vcr no dvr, no cellphone, the great outdoors was their play ground, free movie on Saturdays at the plaza at Noontime, foodstamps yes in books not a debit card, no a/c only fans, ❤ Went to Church every Sunday, God always provided for our needs. I am much stronger of a woman today from living life in the 80's and 90's poor ❤

My husband is a home body when he is not at work. We have 2 special needs children. Anything we do is just me and the kids. All the Drs appointments, visiting family, going to church or homeschool functions or hospitalizations. In turn me and my children are super close. We have never had extra money for trips or vacations. You realize how strong you are and learn to be self reliant. I enjoy your channel. Thank you for sharing.

We raised our three on a dairy farm, they learned to find fun on the farm and they also learned how to work together too. They had chores. We did not have commercial TV and they are now adults. None of them have televisions!
My husband was very mentally ill too, but he managed to be a very good father. It was really lonely a lot when he would have episodes. I could never get him to accept help. I
really liked this video, you are so gracious. I’m widowed now and hated being alone at first. But I have learned to rely on myself again. You are remarkable! Godspeed!

I’ve just learned of your videos. We have the doctor husband bit in common. The demanding schedules and long hours away from home I too did much of the child rearing on my own. We’ve been married almost 32 years and my girls are all married now. I was first so sad about your story until I realized that you are not a sad person. You are a total winner. You literally took lemons and made lemonade with crushed ice and sugar for you and your children to enjoy for a lifetime. You are a woman of courage and of faith, hope, and joy. You have may not have material things in excess, but you have peace, and that is priceless. This choice also necessitated that you give all you have to give to your children: your love, time, and attention, and that’s all they need. You’ve made all the right choices in my book. Keep strong. I hope you are tapping onto all sources of help available to you and the children. Please consider an Amazon wish list, it’s a way to allow others to be generous. You’d be giving others an opportunity. God bless you

After two domestic violence marriages, I too became a strong single mom of four children. My dad taught me so many things growing up, like changing a tire, changing the oil on my car and many other things, learning cooking in school and with mom and dad teaching me, along with learning canning from parents and grandparents, I learned to be stronger and more self-sufficient. My kids played outside, rode bikes, and explored nature! We went on picnics, hikes, camping, fishing, roadtrips, field trips. I never let them spend much time in front of the tv . They have grown up to be amazing human beings!

I think you are amazing and your kids are so lucky to have you. I was married at 19 and was a stay at home Mom and looking back I didn't have much confidence. I am glad for being poor and buying a fixer upper old house because we learned many skills , have owned eight houses and always know how to fix things ourselves.. When my kids were older we had bills from a flood and I went to college and graduated with science degrees at the age of 48. I had to be away from home for an internship and then took a job too far to commute, bought my own little house and traveled home every weekend. It really changed me. I'm glad that my daughters saw their Mom do those things. Like you said, some of those things I didn't really want to do but I'm glad I did them. It also touched my heart when you talked about other people helping you. I was ill for two years and had to learn to accept people taking care of me and my marriage and relationship with my children is the better for it. People who have never seen hard times struggle more when they finally do hit some.

And it is a situation you want to advise but choose to leave be for mental peace..Because I refuse to tell him how to spend his money he worked for….Same with my daughter I stay out their budgets unless I’m asked I was the same way when married that’s why we never combined finances.. best decision ever made for myself….single parenting his hard but can be done ..I raised 2 and I have cerebral palsy and now they have children…

Hello from New Hanpshire. Being poor is relative. We choose to live a simple life on the farm. I have had enough "stuff" during my life to know it does not necessarily solve your problems or make you happy. My motto these days is 'back to the basics'. Being mindful of keeping healthy is key for me or I can't accomplish the rest. We are grateful for a dry roof over our heads, plenty of wood for the winter, good food on the table and enough gas to get us to church and to run errands or to see friends and family. Only some of my clothing is new and I plan to learn to sew. I buy some items new and like you, I buy items built to last. So much can be bought gently used or even bartered. My Tacoma is 2004 and our Honda is 2011. Good mechanic near-by plus AAA road service.'-). Our vacations are mostly day trips. I take art lessons on line. Its all good. God is good ~ Diane. P.S. - I sent you an email yesterday with photos of our family farm.

Amen! I love this. Back to the basics is a great motto. I agree that stuff doesn't solve problems or make you happy. And to me stuff slows me down and takes too much time to put away, organize, clean, etc. Sounds like you have a wonderful life. Good for you for making those vehicles last! Awesome that you're learning art and sewing. How fun! Keep it up!

15:57 Your vacation stories remind me of a time a few weeks ago when my aunt (my dad’s youngest sister) was saying how darn impressed she was with my Mom for taking my sister and I to her wedding (I had just turned 5 a few weeks earlier and my sibling was 16 months old at the time- Dad was deployed with the military). She said at the time that she thought it was impressive, but especially thought it was impressive a few years later when she had kids a few years later and didn’t feel able to travel with them. I understood her point (and I also think my Mom is darn impressive!), but I also reflected that my Mom had to find her inner strength to do it and she managed to do so and has been great at traveling with kids since (and meeting all of life’s tasks whenever dad deployed). Strong Moms are awesome Moms!

This is so encouraging for me as I’m relying on Gid for helping me with something big. I’ve had similar things happen to me so your story just confirms that I can continue to trust God the same way you are. I’m 66 and single and being on a low income has made me even mote resourceful than I have been in the past.

You are an awesome mom! Most of us are just doing the best we can. My husband was in the military for 22 years. My boys and I are very close. I also homeschooled because we moved every year to two. My husband was deployed multiple times for 6months or a year at a time. The boys and I learned to just have our own schedule and do trips by ourselves. My boys learned to help out and we got through many difficult times. Your parties remind me of our Friday pizza nights. We threw a blanket on the floor and ate pizza while watching movies. My husband would be at work all hours. It’s hard when you see others families that have both parents working together. I know how you feel at church or events with no husband. My heart goes out to you. It does get lonely. Your doing a great job! God bless🙏

You do not need a script, you are on track on what you're about to tell us. About the kids, thats how we grew up in the 70s and 80s. Didnt have much stuff, bikes and cross country skis was handmedowns from my brother and sister or my cousin. I hated getting things after my brother, as it was always blue! 😂 We lived in a little town with the woods and a creek close by. I tought my kids the same way. We moved back to my hometown when I was widowed. The kids played outside all day long, and I have always restricted the time they get to spend on tv or videogames. In my opinion it is so much better, they get more inventive and creative. I do not, or have never described myself as poor, even by every standard we were. I had a low income, working 2 part time jobs. We had a house with a mortgage, bills paid, food on the table, a car that always had issues, and some money saved every month. I went on vacation every 2 or 3 years, even to the USA, on a tiny budget road trip. I think we single moms or dads can do everything we want, but not always. Today it is harder. With the interest on the mortgages, inflation on everything especially food. I budget every paycheck, and shop after a mealplan and always have a shoppinglist. Try not to stray from that. 🙂
