My big cat! She sleeps next to me every night, and alerts me to animals outside and spiders on the ceiling. I also discovered she catches mice! None of my former cats ever did that. The word is out about her among the mice, and my house has been mouse-free since I got her.
I know you're joking but my diabetic mum was advised by her doctor to have glucose sweets handy for emergency use. It can save you from a diabetic coma. Easy to keep in a handbag or pocket when you leave the house
Firefighter here, learn to use a real fire extinguisher. The little hairspray ones are used up fast. Get a real extinguisher. And remember P.A.S.S.: PULL the pin, AIM at the BASE of the flame, SQUEEZE the handles together and, SWEEP back and forth. I hope this helps those unfamiliar with fire fighting. Otherwise, take your extinguisher into any firehall and anyone there will be glad to explain it to you. I would suggest a 5 pound ABC rated extinguisher. These will put out any type of fire commonly experienced in your home. Please consider getting and getting acquainted with a real fire extinguisher. Stay safe.
@@kellyl.3059 Yes. The problem is that sometimes for a fire on the stove, whatever is burning can be knocked over or off the stove. Don't panic and use them carefully. I'd still suggest a fire extinguisher, just in case.
@@kellyl.3059I've read reviews on those. If I remember correctly they're made with fiberglass and even messier than an extinguisher. Imagine fiberglass shards the size of splinters getting all over your kitchen and surrounding areas and getting in everything. Not only is it quite the mess but it's dangerous as well.
Yes! Started my oven on fire when silicone heat resistant trays stored in the bottom drawer caught on fire! Have both a full size and a couple of smaller ones.
Instead of a fire extinguisher, I would recommend a fire blanket ... You just cover the fire with it and it smothers the fire. It is reusable, doesn't expire, doesn't leave a mess ...
Someone else has said that they're one-time use only, but that may be true for some of them but not all. I don't know. I just thought I'd better mention it here for other readers because we have conflicting messages in the comments.
@@AmandaJYoungsI had a gas bottle fire and put it out with a fire blanket, afterwards I folded it and put it back in it's container. I've not had to use it again but cannot see why it won't work. 81, just me and my cat Rocky, he is probably the only thing I couldn't do without. 😊
Best grabber I have found is one from Amazon that once you squeeze the handle shut, it stays shut so I don’t have to keep pressure on the handle to retain my grip on the item I am picking up! Old arthritic hands love this one.
I love living with the things I have now. But, I know what it's like to live without running water, with sand floors and tarpaper walls. First couple years I was married we had a house didn't have a roof when I got it. Had to add that before moving in. At least it, had a wood floor. We had to haul water from the a spring a mile away. It had tarpaper walls and an outhouse without a door but, with a 1 mile view. Yeah, I can live without a lot but, I love having indoor plumbing, air conditioning, nice furnishings and solid, hardwood floors. Yes, I made $44 a week as a concrete laborer back then.
Love all the great ideas! One little item that I seem to need more often these days is a magnifier, ours has a light in it...and I have a pair of tweezers with a magnifier built in for slivers after working outside. As for your solar outdoor lights you can actually use them indoors too in case of a power outage. We keep a few small solar lights with a few of those el-cheap-o glow light sticks that you can usually find in the party section of your local store in with our emergency supplies...instead of burning candles which could turn into a fire hazard.
@@briannab5296 Solar lights work in the dark...outside or inside. You just have to charge them up by setting them out in the sun, even if it's on a windowsill, then turn them on when it's dark in the house. Most are already charged when you buy them, you have to pull a safety tab to get them to work and most have an off and on tab, you can charge the battery, turn the light off, then turn it on when you have a power outage. They aren't super bright but will help you get around when everything is dark. Hope that helps...
Jen, I have now bought the same model of outdoor solar lights that you have, the flickering ones. I live in Sweden, Europe, so I was surprised we had them here, in a store. They were on sale for $3.50 each - got one XL too and that one cost $7. Eye-catching out in the garden when it's dark. ✨
Thank you for all these wonderful ideas. I have recently I light having a light on my front and back porch at night, although I hate trying to remember to turn the lights on and off. Recently I was introduced to light bulbs that automatically come on at dusk and go off at dawn. What a lifesaver for me. Blessings to you from Texas.
My Nespresso coffee maker…..mornings would not be the same without it. I do a grocery shop once a week and the following day I batch cook my evening meals for the week. Gives me a dedicated purpose for 2 days of the week. I do like the idea of having emergency information on or in the fridge plus a list of important daily medications. I’ll do that tomorrow.
I’m 77, living alone. I love my mini crockpot. It makes plenty for several servings without being overwhelmed with too many portions to freeze. I keep. My bigger crockpot for times I might have friends over. But my mini crockpot I will use several times a week.
For back scratching, I use a soft bristle back brush. It's wonderful, because I can give my back a really good scratching without abradind the skin. Another thing I can't live alone without is a pair of waterpump pliers, which I keep in my kitchen drawer for opening tough screw-top bottles, like sports drink bottle tops Also, my JarKey jarpop, for releasing the vacuum seal on screw-top jars. It works like a beer bottle opener, but on big jars. It's easy and low tech; no moving parts, works like a charm, and stores in a drawer.
All great ideas in this video. I definitely want to get a grabber because I am short and most of my cupboard shelves are taller than me and my balance isn't what it used to be now that I am older and have arthritis in my spine and knees. So, I don't use my step ladder much anymore. Also love the toaster oven, air fryer and crock pot appliances because I don't trust my balance getting hot pans out of the oven or large pans of boiling water from the stove to sink. I’m 64. I’ve lived solo since my 20s. I even adopted a special needs baby in China. You don’t really need all of this stuff. It’s too much! Keep it simpler. ❤
Great list! I have most of these including a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. I like the idea of smothering the fire without worrying about accidentally spreading it by aiming wrong.
Back scratcher (as someone else mentioned) and in the winter a hot water bottle is important as my feet tend to get too cold, I pre-heat my bed down by my feet by putting it under the blankets about an hour before I'm ready for bed.
Thank you for an amazing disposition, positive outlook & great living alone tips. I keep a flashlight handy but also a metal box with a candle holder & the metal box has a small drawer to include matches, Xtra candles & cigarette lighter in case the matches fail.

Portable speaker for music. Air fryer. Small stackable portable bins for recycling and return cans (Northern Europe) that I can lift and put in my car. Sunrise clock for winter times. Diary and planners to keep track of goals and monitor wellbeing outcomes. Dedicated ergonomic home office. Eye mask for sleeping. These make my life easier, whether or not they are single specific, what me know ☺
I wouldn't be without my eye mask. It's essential to have one if you work shifts or sleep at irregular or unusual times. I would recommend Manta Sleep masks, even though I live in the UK and had to get both of mine from the US. But they really are the best I've ever found and stand up to regular washing well.
Most people could benefit from knowing how to do a "screenshot" for: saving info that u would want to find quickly, reminders, sharing with friends or colleagues some helpful info, for It's not a "thing" but it sure comes in handy
Living in a huge multi unit condo complex I have a wagon that I use all the time for moving groceries or luggage from parking garage to & from unit, but also for taking cardboard to the recycling floor, or helping a neighbor move things, or even hauling my camping cool to a friend’ unit in another unit when their fridge died & they were waiting on delivery in a few days. I’m amazed at how often I use it & since it can collapse for traveling I’ve taken it with me and use it at the other end.
Great ideas! I don't know if this qualifies but I wear a CPAP at night and a few years ago I purchased a rechargeable battery backup unit for it. That way if the power goes out I can still get a good nights sleep. Worth every penny!
Ok...this is going to be an odd one, so buckle up!😳 Nipple covers! I have a hernia, and I just can't have a bra on all the time. I do wear one for special occasions, but especially when at home if I want to throw on a comfortable blouse or dress ( especially when it's hot) these are awesome! Amazon puts out some very inexpensive ones that are healthy, safe and can be used over 50 times. I just wipe them off at the end of the day with a baby wipe and air them out overnight. With people coming to the door unexpectedly, I don't have to worry about feeling indecent! In the heat, I get rashes under " the girls" if I wear a bra. I never have that problem now with wearing these. The synthetic fibers in bras create yeast. My daughter told me about these, and I absolutely cannot be without them!
This is a great idea. After open heart surgery 10 years ago I hate bras so I only wear one if going out, and I've actually bought cotton stretchy bandeaus instead if I'm wearing something that might show nipples. 80 next year so I don't care about looking perky, just comfortable. 😊
Fruit of the Loom has what they call a sports bra that is all cotton with a little bit of spandex with no metal, just elastic. I wear them at home and to sleep in. Even wore them for MRI. Very comfy, and I don't get any irritation under the girls. Cheap too, $20 ish for three. Initially bought some at Walmart but Amazon has them too.
Hate bras, but self-conscious about uneven nipples after a past lumpectomy. Discovered silicone nipple covers last year. Life-changing!!! Do the trick & so comfortable, especially in this heat!
I have a pair of tongs that are two feet long (Amazon). Use them for, of all things, my laundry. Mobility is limited so they're of great use reaching into the washer then transferring to the dryer. Likewise, getting things out of the dryer, without having to bend or reach so much.
You asked for it Jen. Recipe of buttered chicken please. I was given a grabber when I had spinal fractures. Now I have four around the house and really think everyone should have at least one. I am going to lok for the projector? Alarm clocks. Might be a fun gift for adult grandchildren. As usual, good video thanks.

A simple little flap crossbody mini purse. Most of my pants don’t have pockets. And I just wear my little purse. Big enough to hold my smart phone and post box keys. I have it on me all day long moving around my house. If I fall and injure myself bad enough to prevent mobility, my phone won’t be far from me so I can call for help.
I make chili and soups in a big batch then freeze in individual portions plastic containers .I also make meatloaf ,BBQ out of a pork roast ,sloppy joes,lasagna and baked spaghetti. I keep my meal containers in a dish pan in my freezer. It is nice to have a good meal when I don’t want to cook. I also freeze leftovers when I have gotten tired of the meal .I do a big batch cook when I find meat on special.
The half-cup and one-cup Ball jars make it easy to freeze one-dish portions of cooked rice, sauces, soups or stews, or to split up cans of broth, beans, fruit, pasta sauce, etc., to freeze them. I have way more food in my freezer than in my fridge.
@@bettystudzinski7200 I use various sized re-usable glass Mason jars. No plastic, so better for the environment. For liquids, if you stay at or a teeny bit below the line near the top, you'll never have a jar break. For solids, I try to fill every nook and cranny so there's no freezer burn. I pop a label on top with what's inside and the month/year I froze it. I always have bone broth, soups, chilis, purees, pesto, shredded chicken etc. in my freezer.
Toaster oven is a definite must for me when I was living alone (my sis has moved in). I not only cooked frozen foods, I'd cook chicken pieces, pork chops, salmon, etc.......love it for one person!
I use my toaster oven daily, to avoid heating the kitchen -- heat wave here. I bake and roast from scratch using it. Right now there's a carrot, chard, mushroom pasta baking in it.
Instant Pot, paper shredder, CD player (for relaxing sleep music), back scratcher, outside motion light, hand vac! (for bugs), my pretty (teal) bible, and Nestle's Dark Chocolate Chips!

Thought I would not use it. I love it. Make so many things in there it is an amazing way to make meals. It makes amazing corn. Also I made a steak and it turned out just perfectly and no mess. Takes a few minutes to clean so easy.
I too buy meat on sale and portion it up in vacu-pak sleeves so I can just pull out what I need. Really helpful tool too for summer berries from the garden.
Thank you for your video and channel. I have been enjoying the content you post. I wanted to share a couple of essential items I have. I have a pet alert card in my wallet and one in my car in case, I'm in an accident. I keep one next to my driver's license and the other in a visible spot in my car. I also have a ladder with wide steps and handrails to minimize falling. (I'm under 5 feet tall and have high cabinets and ceilings. I also have an emergency plan for my pets. My emergency contacts heach have a copy. I also keep a copy posted on my fridge. It helps people know what to do with my dog in case I'm hospitalized or pass away. I don't want him to be sent to a shelter. I also have a fire blanket and respirator mask that I keep next to my bed. In case of a fire, I can cover my dog and myself to help us get out of the house. I have a grabber - I originally got one close to 30 years ago when I had a ruptured lumbar disc and couldn’t pick anything up from the floor - but I really need to get an updated one with the rubber grippers. The fire extinguisher is a great idea! I have always worried that I wouldn’t remember how to use a regular one. I think I use my freezer more as a single person than I did with a family of four. I batch cook a LOT. As I’ve gotten older, I really don’t want to cook when I get home from work.
I got my grabber initially when I had cataract surgery as you are not supposed to bend over post op. However now I’m 80+ I’ve been using my grabber for 25 years.
I used to live alone in a rural area of Oregon. The porch light out back only illuminated about 10 feet of deck and from then on, it was pitch black at night. I stopped going out at night to stargaze when one morning I found cougar prints in the mud all around the back deck...
I have really long barbecue tongs that I used to get things out of the kitchen cabinets. I don’t have a barbecue, but I have the tongs but ones with a silicone grip make way more sense especially if I’m trying to get something that’s glass. I’m short so I always did this even when I didn’t live alone.
My "can't live without it" item is my remote light switch for my bedroom. There is no overhead light in my bedroom, and the lamp sits "way over there" beside my bed. Walking into the dark room is dangerous because it makes a fall more likely. I hang the remote on a hook just outside the room, and always (at night, of course) turn the light on before entering. Love, love, love it. I bought mine at Home Depot, but I expect that every hardware store has them.
You may have mentioned this in your first video, but I often reach for a jar opener aid. I have two, one I made with fabric (a 6x6” square with a 6x6” square of rubberized shelf liner) - this works on little jars. For large jars, I have one I purchased online. Also, a hint I heard and found works on something like a pickle jar is to poke a tiny hole in the center of the lid. I do this by just tapping the point of a knife with my meat mallet, but keeping a nail in that everything else drawer might be more practical, safer and better for your knife. Like magic the seal is released and your jar opens easily.
My dad taught me how to use a small spoon to pry a spot under the lid gap a little till the seal pops and you can unscrew it easily. A few taps with the back of a knife works also and you don’t damage the lid.

Great content as always! I have my Dad’s grabber and his long handled shoe horn! I use the shoe horn every day, the grabber not so much but it is handy!
I carry a retractable back scratcher in my purse. In the grocery store things are out of reach for me (I'm only 5 ft) so I extend the back scratcher to be able to pull things foreward for me to reach things on high shelves. I ordered it from Amazon and my friends also got themselves one.
Note about fire extinguishers : FIRE EXTINGUISHERS HAVE EXPIRATION DATES‼️ You need to check the date and they also need to be checked regularly to ensure they still work. I don’t know how to check them. Mine expired and I got rid of it. Now I’ll get the spray can one. Thanks
If you need a grabber about 3' long, the RMS magnetic tip reachers are the winners in terms of how well they grab thin items and also how much weight they can hold. And I second the recommendation for a minipurse or fannypack (if you lack pockets) to carry keys and a small, fall-resistant flip phone when wandering about one's property. A few years back, I slipped on wet flagstone and dislocated one elbow while gashing my other arm; it was miserably painful to crawl back to the house on my belly and then find a way to stand up in such a state. Since then, that minipurse always comes with.
I have seen the cart that now comes with a motor. Put an emergency contact of someone who will take care of your pet if you are in the hospital or rehab or die. Use red XMAS strip LED lights on at night and keep them on in your hallway on the way to the bathroom. You can see but it will allow you to go back to sleep
I have thrown my keys away at couple times. Always during times of duress. The worst. I had to shimmy into my seventh floor off the fire escape with nothing but air below me. Lucky I survived.
Hi Jen following your ICE re your pets, i also carry in my walket a card to say i have a pet at home. The company also sent a little disk to put on my keyring. So this ICE is heaven forbid i am in an accident away from home.Added to this and in line with an animal chatity that in case of emergency will care for my furbaby (and are provided for in my WILL)there is the card in my home to also tell for eg a fire man that there is a pet and whom to call. Can't live w/o yard grabber tool! got on Amazon --set of 2. Don't have to bend AT ALL to p/u sticks! Kind of like a cane. Also, my favorite thing is my folding grocery cart to wheel groceries in from car right up to my kitchen table! Amazon also.
You can have buckets in the bathroom that you fill with water, in case of fire. If you want to buy the fire extinguisher as spray bottle be careful what you buy. Some of them are worthless.
Idk why I have such a mental block about learning to using a drill. Lol. 😂😂 (Previous video I guess lol). TOASTER!! Same. I have a tiny combo tho. (Toast, bake, air fry). Idk if it’s Bcuz alone or the cats/raccoons. Lol. But I also have to always have the string low lights on at night (one for living room, back cat porch and side “stray cat” porch lol). I love my toaster oven I don't think I've turned the large oven on in 2 years. My adult son lives with me since we moved to North Carolina from Connecticut but he does his own thing so I consider myself a loan and I'm just trying to make life easier for myself I also just got a new small crock pot

Put a medical history USB credit card in your wallet. It literally contains all your medical info that can be opened by any computer with a USB port. If you can’t speak, it speaks for you. And print out a copy and put it on the back of your front door. Also include copies of living will or health care power of attorney.
Mine isn’t just by my bed. It’s in my bed. It’s under the pillow next to me and I have a separate one that I just keep in my suitcase all the time so I don’t forget it.
A teaspoon works well. Push the handle between the jar and the top and twist the spoon. It will break the vacuum seal (you’ll hear it pop) and then you can twist the lid off
Better, Amazon has a gadget that you install under a kitchen cabinet which is ALWAYS where you can find it and opens everything with ease. It's just called an under-counter jar opener. Best thing I ever bought for my kitchen. Opens every screw-on lid from a soda bottle to large jars. Under $10. I've given up on pull-tab cans. I just use my regular can opener on them. The pull tabs are awful for the elderly, and I always wind up spilling the contents of the can all over when I try to use them.

Wish I had known about that, but I did need to buy two grabbers recently, so that has been helpful for a number of reasons

Recently I was introduced to light bulbs that automatically come on at dusk and go off at dawn. What a lifesaver for me. Blessings to you from Texas.
My Nespresso coffee maker…..mornings would not be the same without it. I do a grocery shop once a week and the following day I batch cook my evening meals for the week. Gives me a dedicated purpose for 2 days of the week.
I do like the idea of having emergency information on or in the fridge plus a list of important daily medications. I’ll do that tomorrow.
I’m 77, living alone. I love my mini crockpot. It makes plenty for several servings without being overwhelmed with too many portions to freeze. I keep. My bigger crockpot for times I might have friends over. But my mini crockpot I will use several times a week.
I love my cart in my apartment! It carries the groceries, other purchases that are too big/heavy to carry, etc.

For back scratching, I use a soft bristle back brush. It's wonderful, because I can give my back a really good scratching without abradind the skin.
Another thing I can't live alone without is a pair of waterpump pliers, which I keep in my kitchen drawer for opening tough screw-top bottles, like sports drink bottle tops
Also, my JarKey jarpop, for releasing the vacuum seal on screw-top jars. It works like a beer bottle opener, but on big jars. It's easy and low tech; no moving parts, works like a charm, and stores in a drawer.
All great ideas in this video. I definitely want to get a grabber because I am short and most of my cupboard shelves are taller than me and my balance isn't what it used to be now that I am older and have arthritis in my spine and knees. So, I don't use my step ladder much anymore. Also love the toaster oven, air fryer and crock pot appliances because I don't trust my balance getting hot pans out of the oven or large pans of boiling water from the stove to sink. I’m 64. I’ve lived solo since my 20s. I even adopted a special needs baby in China. You don’t really need all of this stuff. It’s too much! Keep it simpler. ❤
Great list! I have most of these including a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket. I like the idea of smothering the fire without worrying about accidentally spreading it by aiming wrong.
Back scratcher (as someone else mentioned) and in the winter a hot water bottle is important as my feet tend to get too cold, I pre-heat my bed down by my feet by putting it under the blankets about an hour before I'm ready for bed.

Portable speaker for music. Air fryer. Small stackable portable bins for recycling and return cans (Northern Europe) that I can lift and put in my car. Sunrise clock for winter times. Diary and planners to keep track of goals and monitor wellbeing outcomes. Dedicated ergonomic home office. Eye mask for sleeping. These make my life easier, whether or not they are single specific, what me know ☺
I wouldn't be without my eye mask. It's essential to have one if you work shifts or sleep at irregular or unusual times. I would recommend Manta Sleep masks, even though I live in the UK and had to get both of mine from the US. But they really are the best I've ever found and stand up to regular washing well.
Most people could benefit from knowing how to do a "screenshot" for: saving info that u would want to find quickly, reminders, sharing with friends or colleagues some helpful info, for It's not a "thing" but it sure comes in handy
Living in a huge multi unit condo complex I have a wagon that I use all the time for moving groceries or luggage from parking garage to & from unit, but also for taking cardboard to the recycling floor, or helping a neighbor move things, or even hauling my camping cool to a friend’ unit in another unit when their fridge died & they were waiting on delivery in a few days. I’m amazed at how often I use it & since it can collapse for traveling I’ve taken it with me and use it at the other end.
Great ideas! I don't know if this qualifies but I wear a CPAP at night and a few years ago I purchased a rechargeable battery backup unit for it. That way if the power goes out I can still get a good nights sleep. Worth every penny!

Ok...this is going to be an odd one, so buckle up!😳 Nipple covers! I have a hernia, and I just can't have a bra on all the time. I do wear one for special occasions, but especially when at home if I want to throw on a comfortable blouse or dress ( especially when it's hot) these are awesome! Amazon puts out some very inexpensive ones that are healthy, safe and can be used over 50 times. I just wipe them off at the end of the day with a baby wipe and air them out overnight. With people coming to the door unexpectedly, I don't have to worry about feeling indecent! In the heat, I get rashes under " the girls" if I wear a bra. I never have that problem now with wearing these. The synthetic fibers in bras create yeast. My daughter told me about these, and I absolutely cannot be without them!
They do make all-cotton bras, so search online or in those catalogs.
This is a great idea. After open heart surgery 10 years ago I hate bras so I only wear one if going out, and I've actually bought cotton stretchy bandeaus instead if I'm wearing something that might show nipples. 80 next year so I don't care about looking perky, just comfortable. 😊

Fruit of the Loom has what they call a sports bra that is all cotton with a little bit of spandex with no metal, just elastic. I wear them at home and to sleep in. Even wore them for MRI. Very comfy, and I don't get any irritation under the girls. Cheap too, $20 ish for three. Initially bought some at Walmart but Amazon has them too.
Hate bras, but self-conscious about uneven nipples after a past lumpectomy. Discovered silicone nipple covers last year. Life-changing!!! Do the trick & so comfortable, especially in this heat!
I have a pair of tongs that are two feet long (Amazon). Use them for, of all things, my laundry. Mobility is limited so they're of great use reaching into the washer then transferring to the dryer. Likewise, getting things out of the dryer, without having to bend or reach so much.

I was given a grabber when I had spinal fractures. Now I have four around the house and really think everyone should have at least one.

A simple little flap crossbody mini purse. Most of my pants don’t have pockets. And I just wear my little purse. Big enough to hold my smart phone and post box keys. I have it on me all day long moving around my house. If I fall and injure myself bad enough to prevent mobility, my phone won’t be far from me so I can call for help.

Freezer containers for one person servings.
I make chili and soups in a big batch then freeze in individual portions plastic containers .I also make meatloaf ,BBQ out of a pork roast ,sloppy joes,lasagna and baked spaghetti. I keep my meal containers in a dish pan in my freezer. It is nice to have a good meal when I don’t want to cook. I also freeze leftovers when I have gotten tired of the meal .I do a big batch cook when I find meat on special.
The half-cup and one-cup Ball jars make it easy to freeze one-dish portions of cooked rice, sauces, soups or stews, or to split up cans of broth, beans, fruit, pasta sauce, etc., to freeze them. I have way more food in my freezer than in my fridge.
@@bettystudzinski7200 I use various sized re-usable glass Mason jars. No plastic, so better for the environment. For liquids, if you stay at or a teeny bit below the line near the top, you'll never have a jar break. For solids, I try to fill every nook and cranny so there's no freezer burn. I pop a label on top with what's inside and the month/year I froze it. I always have bone broth, soups, chilis, purees, pesto, shredded chicken etc. in my freezer.
Toaster oven is a definite must for me when I was living alone (my sis has moved in).
I not only cooked frozen foods, I'd cook chicken pieces, pork chops, salmon, etc.......love it for one person!
I use my toaster oven daily, to avoid heating the kitchen -- heat wave here. I bake and roast from scratch using it. Right now there's a carrot, chard, mushroom pasta baking in it.

I like that suggestion for the clock on the ceiling looking into this as well. Thought I would not use it. I love it. Make so many things in there it is an amazing way to make meals. It makes amazing corn. Also I made a steak and it turned out just perfectly and no mess. Like a whole lot of things in our lives, fire extinguishers do expire. Check yours periodically to be sure it is still good.
I too buy meat on sale and portion it up in vacu-pak sleeves so I can just pull out what I need. Really helpful tool too for summer berries from the garden.

I have a pet alert card in my wallet and one in my car in case, I'm in an accident. I keep one next to my driver's license and the other in a visible spot in my car.
I also have a ladder with wide steps and handrails to minimize falling. (I'm under 5 feet tall and have high cabinets and ceilings.
I also have an emergency plan for my pets. My emergency contacts heach have a copy. I also keep a copy posted on my fridge. It helps people know what to do with my dog in case I'm hospitalized or pass away. I don't want him to be sent to a shelter.
I also have a fire blanket and respirator mask that I keep next to my bed. In case of a fire, I can cover my dog and myself to help us get out of the house.

I have a grabber - I originally got one close to 30 years ago when I had a ruptured lumbar disc and couldn’t pick anything up from the floor - but I really need to get an updated one with the rubber grippers. The fire extinguisher is a great idea! I have always worried that I wouldn’t remember how to use a regular one. I think I use my freezer more as a single person than I did with a family of four. I batch cook a LOT. As I’ve gotten older, I really don’t want to cook when I get home from work.
I got my grabber initially when I had cataract surgery as you are not supposed to bend over post op. However now I’m 80+ I’ve been using my grabber for 25 years.
I used to live alone in a rural area of Oregon. The porch light out back only illuminated about 10 feet of deck and from then on, it was pitch black at night. I stopped going out at night to stargaze when one morning I found cougar prints in the mud all around the back deck...
I have really long barbecue tongs that I used to get things out of the kitchen cabinets. I don’t have a barbecue, but I have the tongs but ones with a silicone grip make way more sense especially if I’m trying to get something that’s glass. I’m short so I always did this even when I didn’t live alone.
My "can't live without it" item is my remote light switch for my bedroom. There is no overhead light in my bedroom, and the lamp sits "way over there" beside my bed. Walking into the dark room is dangerous because it makes a fall more likely. I hang the remote on a hook just outside the room, and always (at night, of course) turn the light on before entering. Love, love, love it. I bought mine at Home Depot, but I expect that every hardware store has them.
You may have mentioned this in your first video, but I often reach for a jar opener aid. I have two, one I made with fabric (a 6x6” square with a 6x6” square of rubberized shelf liner) - this works on little jars. For large jars, I have one I purchased online. Also, a hint I heard and found works on something like a pickle jar is to poke a tiny hole in the center of the lid. I do this by just tapping the point of a knife with my meat mallet, but keeping a nail in that everything else drawer might be more practical, safer and better for your knife. Like magic the seal is released and your jar opens easily.

My dad taught me how to use a small spoon to pry a spot under the lid gap a little till the seal pops and you can unscrew it easily. A few taps with the back of a knife works also and you don’t damage the lid.
Use grabber to open and close living room curtains. Lots of stuff in front of windows.😅

Meal plan in this house is finishing the leftovers or whatever is the oldest date in the freezer or pantry. Grocery haul is to fill in holes.
I use my Microwave a lot. And I also have both a fire blanket and fire extinguisher. And a grabber too, which comes in handy.

I carry a retractable back scratcher in my purse. In the grocery store things are out of reach for me (I'm only 5 ft) so I extend the back scratcher to be able to pull things foreward for me to reach things on high shelves. I ordered it from Amazon and my friends also got themselves one.

Note about fire extinguishers : FIRE EXTINGUISHERS HAVE EXPIRATION DATES‼️ You need to check the date and they also need to be checked regularly to ensure they still work. I don’t know how to check them. Mine expired and I got rid of it. Now I’ll get the spray can one. Thanks

I have that Gorilla cart and I really like it, especially the dump feature.
If you need a grabber about 3' long, the RMS magnetic tip reachers are the winners in terms of how well they grab thin items and also how much weight they can hold. And I second the recommendation for a minipurse or fannypack (if you lack pockets) to carry keys and a small, fall-resistant flip phone when wandering about one's property. A few years back, I slipped on wet flagstone and dislocated one elbow while gashing my other arm; it was miserably painful to crawl back to the house on my belly and then find a way to stand up in such a state. Since then, that minipurse always comes with.

I have seen the cart that now comes with a motor. Put an emergency contact of someone who will take care of your pet if you are in the hospital or rehab or die. Use red XMAS strip LED lights on at night and keep them on in your hallway on the way to the bathroom. You can see but it will allow you to go back to sleep
My grabber makes me feel independent! And my air fryer makes me feel like I can cook better than I really do.
I have thrown my keys away at couple times. Always during times of duress. The worst. I had to shimmy into my seventh floor off the fire escape with nothing but air below me. Lucky I survived.
Hi Jen following your ICE re your pets, i also carry in my walket a card to say i have a pet at home. The company also sent a little disk to put on my keyring. So this ICE is heaven forbid i am in an accident away from home.Added to this and in line with an animal chatity that in case of emergency will care for my furbaby (and are provided for in my WILL)there is the card in my home to also tell for eg a fire man that there is a pet and whom to call. You can have buckets in the bathroom that you fill with water, in case of fire. If you want to buy the fire extinguisher as spray bottle be careful what you buy. Some of them are worthless.

Re: Fire extinquishers-There is a product called Prepared Hero which is a fire suppression pad/blanket. It looks easy to use. Kind of idiot proof :-)

Put a medical history USB credit card in your wallet. It literally contains all your medical info that can be opened by any computer with a USB port. If you can’t speak, it speaks for you. And print out a copy and put it on the back of your front door. Also include copies of living will or health care power of attorney.

My favorite thing that I absolutely cannot live without is a back scratcher. I have it by my bed at home and take it anywhere I’m traveling to.
Mine isn’t just by my bed. It’s in my bed. It’s under the pillow next to me and I have a separate one that I just keep in my suitcase all the time so I don’t forget it.

I use a pipe wrench from my tool box!
A teaspoon works well. Push the handle between the jar and the top and twist the spoon. It will break the vacuum seal (you’ll hear it pop) and then you can twist the lid off
Better, Amazon has a gadget that you install under a kitchen cabinet which is ALWAYS where you can find it and opens everything with ease. It's just called an under-counter jar opener. Best thing I ever bought for my kitchen. Opens every screw-on lid from a soda bottle to large jars. Under $10. I've given up on pull-tab cans. I just use my regular can opener on them. The pull tabs are awful for the elderly, and I always wind up spilling the contents of the can all over when I try to use them.
