    Very excited to see an early Myford Lathe in the process of restoration! My ML1 (17” bed) is in desperate need of the same attention and the detail you provide will both inspire and inform me the correct way to bring this lil piece of history back to life! Only bits broken are the top caps for the spindle… very old breaks, someone in the past has made and installed tin caps over the originals. Still spins beautifully! I’ll be right here waiting patiently (🤔) for your next instalment.

    Hi Paul, great to see you getting stuck into a big project. Let your Engineers OCD rule on the castings, if it looks like you are going to need to remove significant amounts of material anywhere, consider body filler on the low side as opposed to removing material from the high side (maintaining as much mass and strength as possible). Good luck with the scraping, braver man than me! Cheers, Jon

    hi Paul.
    Nice to see the workshop now officially christened with a major project, If getting all the irritating casting alignment marks out pleases you then i say do it, i would. As for the lathe bed for the age of it it doesn't look bad to me looking through a lens at it, scraping is not my favourite pass time in fact i would put it at the bottom of my list of to do's, but that's just me,
    but if you want to have a go then do it i say, why don't you practice on the compound slide first to see how you get on with it.
    Anyway i don't think your going to get bored with the Myford, Unimat and shaper etc projects and all those machines to play with.

    You have quite a bit more experience than I, I wonder if you know the answer to a question I have had for many years now. Has there ever been a lathe that was made for left-handed people? I'm a lefty, and I have developed tricks to make it work, but every lathe I see, I mentally take it apart and try to figure out how it could be rebuilt for a lefty. Have you ever heard of this? Or perhaps a lathe that allowed ambidextrous operations? I can't be the first frustrated left-handed machinist in the world.

      I guess you could probably think of most precision bench/watchmaker lathes, like my P&W 3C 7x16, as an ambidextrous lathe (same for Schaublin, Ames, Stark, etc.) But you have to be willing to put up with no back gear and wonky or non-existent screwcutting ability. Only the headstock and tailstock clamps are made for righties, but the compound/cross slide is interchangeable.

    • @jpsimon206
      @jpsimon206 2 года назад

      @@danielabbey7726 like I said, I always mentally disassemble lathes to see if it could be done. You're absolutely right that the smaller models would work, it seems like you work over the lathe more than in front of it. One day if I win the lottery I will have one commissioned. I appreciate knowing about the models of you named, but I have a condition similar to Parkinson's which kind of rules out tiny work for me. It was never an issue for me until recent declines. I'm just starting to feel a little unsafe at the lathe, so I've been looking around for a slightly safer hobby. That aside, when I was working full-time, it's just something I found myself always wondering about. I worked in a 5-man shop where three of us were lefties. The setup looked a little funny to other machinists.
