New Machine Day is always the best day! Machine: an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task. Looks like a machine to me!

Hi Paul. I have a 1 ton similar press, much more basic, no ratchet. They are the sort of tool that you hardly ever use but occasionally a job comes along where nothing else will do and they are essential. Cheers, Alan.

    Hi Paul,
this is something ive never owned and always managed without, but if one fell my way i might consider.
As for machining the end, the adept shaper would be ideal,
other than that make a round disc, put a hole in it the same diameter as across the diagnals, pop it on the end with a buried grub screw in to hold it, then you could put the steady on, and face it up in the lathe, just a thought👍👍👍👍👍👍
    take care

      Hello Kev,
That is a great idea about using the shaper to square up the end of the ram... and give me a reason to finally get it going. The round disc idea would work too... Thanks for the tips.

Hi Paul. I love that tool. I know exactly what you mean by OCD. I can spend hours prettying an old tool even though it makes no difference to its functionality.
I was wondering, might it be a good idea to make a base for the press using angle iron? That way, you could make it narrow enough to not restrict the door openings? And at the same time, screw it to the floor to avoid it tipping over as you put pressure down on the handle.
    Keep up the good work

Great video film my friend. That is a fine arbour press. I wish I had one of those. I agree with you on fettling the casting. Tools should be pleasant to use and reflect the care of their owner. I like the way you do things, notebook, pencil, musings. I tend to think with a pencil in hand.

    Hi Paul, Happy New Year!!
Squaring that end looks like an ideal job for the shaper but if not can you tidy it up in your lathe? If you are going to fit adaptors to it then you will probably want to bore a hole as well.
The recreational machinist did a great adaptor video for his arbour press it was on Ollys advent calendar, N°19 a very useful addition to his press.
Never seen one this big or with a ratchet before. We used smaller versions for swaging over pins on PCBs. Later on at a different company we had a small press shop with some Smart & Brown toggle presses, ideal for small production batches and light to medium forces, they were ancient then but you could see the care that they took in the different castings,.I think it is important.... you wont feel happy until they've been fettled to your satisfaction!!
In your shot showing the space between the doors I could just see a wheel, have you considered making the base portable? Have a good think about that position, its so easy to bump into these things when you come out of the office, also you need a good margen around the base to make it stable. Just my thoughts!!
    All the best!!

    • @TheKnacklersWorkshop
      @TheKnacklersWorkshop  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hello David,
Happy New Year to you too... When Kev (Mr. Factotum) suggested using the shaper I thought that was a great idea and give me the momentum to get it finished but after some thought I came to the conclusion that the lathe would be better as I can face the end and also drill/bore the hole in one setup.
When I saw Matt (Recreational Machinist) video I started making notes - lol.
On the stand the workmate has sat there for a month or so and have not caused a problem, however I have come up with another idea that I will show in a future video. Thanks for watching.

Unrelated, but I wanted to know your thoughts. I just saw a video of a die filer attachment on a lathe. (ruclips.net/video/-t5ahIh_dQg/видео.html). It made me think maybe I could convert the jigsaw attachment for the Unimat SL into a small die filer. What are your thoughts on my crazy idea?

      Hello,
Yes I have seen the die filer attachments before... and was quite keen to make one for my Myford. I have also been recently thinking that the EmcoStar my work as well at a Unimat SL. The EmcoStar is bigger but hard to control the speed and the Unimat SL is the opposite. I think maybe Unimat SL may be challenging to get the right size files and just general stability.
      Take care.
