brings a tear to my eyes. still can't believe the master of ireland is no longer with us. i will always regret never seeing ronnie singing live. the dub's played the liverpool empire with ronnie and i didn't go,, still regret it 20 years on,
To me the Dubliner's are the best of their or any other generation ( No knock on the Clancy Brothers!). I particularilly like the vocals of Luke Kelly and the soulful and gravelly voice of Ronnie Drew. What a great band. I'm gratefull that I heard them while they were all still alive.
im so moved by him ... ronnie makes me proud of my people i cant believe i never saw him sing in the flesh he stopped touring when i finally got a ticket i dont mind but il miss him
people always say that - unfortunately people do get forgotten. i listen to irish music a lot but most engllish and americans only want tits and boobs pop mu
Lovely to listen this man with such a recognisable voice. i have a rahter 'rareish' recording of him doing 'Danny Boy' with le Arty McGlynn on guitar and a rather good young trumpet player..it was from a NI BBC show about the song Danny Boy...I just need to work out how to get it off VHS and onto here..:D
ronnie sang for god in live and now in the heaven..........i`ll hope i meet you up there and can have a pint with you andwe`ll sing together greetings from aqustria to you all irish
I don't like this song too much, but you guys seem to respect him so i wont insult him in any way. RIP to this guy, wish i had a taste for this kind of music.
Does anyone know (or know where I could find) the context to this song? I understand the meaning but I'm having a little difficulty interpreting what historical situation this man was supposed to have lived through.
A working young man - that wanted to find happiness in the war. Or maybe in USA. Because Ireland was very poor. But I think it was the war. With all the sorries and greath. And nothing to return to - different to what he left.

The world is an emptier place without Ronnie. May God be applauding every ballad and story Ronnie gives Him in Heaven!
Sure can hear the age in his voice, and with Ronnie, his voice seemed to get richer and gain ever more character as he aged. What a man! RIP Ronnie...

the power of this song is that you can hear the age in his voice and brings about such incredible emotion

This, and Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" occupy the same corner of my brain.

This Is the first time I have heard this song what a marvell, I love it.
good lyrics brilliantly presented to remind one's self from whence they came...
So moving. Touches me deeply as I grow old...
Personally as a “yank” Drew is up there with Cash. The rawness of their voice is what carries the stories they sing about.
First time I've heard it, what a great song!
A song of life - taht everybody can recognice - I think. - I can anyway. A very good song/Lyrics.

There's also a delightful rendition of this song from Jimmy Nail. I believe it's on the album Tadpoles In A Jar. No, I'm sure about that.
