Really good, nice to see the frequency response around 1800 as 4G is still required as an anchor for 5G currently in the UK.
I just built a couple of these for my Tmobile wireless home network. My SINR went from 15 to 27 on n41 Band. Very nice.
How did you hook the coax to the T-Mobile gateway?
Nice work! I haven't seen anyone else sharing this level of knowledge. Please, keep it up!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I can confirm the antennas DOES WORK! Made 2 of them and connect to my TCL hh500e 5G router. In the property I live in with router internal antennas I get good 4G signal and I am in the periphery of 5G. In this case I get around 15Mb/s on 4G mode and around 25 on 5G mode. I made the antennas and when connected - 4G mode 70Mb/s, 5G mode 150Mb/s. And there is no direct view to the mast which is nearly 1mile away. Also the antennas are next to the router indoors as I can't place them outdoors due to restrictions. It is hard to find good quality 50ohm cable in UK which is not very expensive. The antenna is well worth the effort though. Thank you!
Nice
@@andrewmcneil I can't find a way to place a picture here on what I made but they are 150mm apart and sitting on mini tripod. Also material used for is not brass.
Great success! Really thinking of making this type of antennas considering the price tag of commercial ones. Where did you get the brass sheets? I am also in UK, in London. How did you attached them to achieve MIMO effect?
Congrats, I just building one for myself to work with huawei cpe router (attached to main port, div port not plugged), unfortunately something went wrong, and it's not working at all :|. My issue is that my router don't see 5g network when indoor, when I put it outside the window it works great, it seems that glass is impenetrable barrier for 5g signal. The idea was to put the antenna outside through the gap in the window (connected via aprox. 2m length cable / 2mm diameter). Does you setup works with single antenna or is it required to use 2 ?
Oh great stuff! I wanted to build one too I didn't get past the eBay stage! Could you link where you got your materials from by any chance? I was looking but I was getting nowhere and I gave up. I'm Also in the UK! You are a total legend 🙏
I built your antenna today, thanks heaps for the tutorial!
Signal isn't any better or worse than with the internal antennas of my router, but they work! Was a very fun little project.
What router are you using?

@@andrewmcneil Hi Sir. This DIY 5G antenna is better than a 5G Yagi-Uda antenna from Cantenna app in android? Want to know if you deployed and test the antenna in outdoor with your modem. How was the signals?
Sooo.. Did you make one? How did it go?
I learn a lot form you keep up the good work my friend...I value your knowledge very much
Hi Andrew, many thanks for taking the time to make all of these videos. I was wondering when you say "5mm brass" do you mean 0.5mm? The sheet you're cutting looks more like half mil rather than half a cm thick.
0.5 😁
Well done, love your work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great build, unsure why you would need an antenna for this though. 5G is short range due to high frequency and 4G fallback is available. 750MHz 4G is great due to speed and the low frequency means propagation is fantastic. Love to see some practical build designs for this.
Thanks Andrew, your builds are always great and informative on techniques.
It is just options I do have a 5G mast quite close to my home.
5G is particularly bad at penetrating buildings, given such a high frequency. I built these because I can't very well stick my gateway with internal receivers out in the rain, but this can sit nicely atop a short mast on the roof.
Well 4G gives me about 1.2 MBit/sec evening time (not great, practically useless) and 5G runs on about 40 MBit/sec but if I close the window the 5G dissapears. Im on a loft and I can clearly see the 2 5G masts. One is about half kilometer the other is 300 meters away. It was all fine from spring to this point in time even with closed windows or even behind a wall. About 3 days ago everything changed so I have to make some external antenna for my CPE pro 2 which doesnt even has an external antenna connector... :(
@@JohnSmith-xz5nb 300m should work fine...
I have nearly 4.5 km to the 5G tower and I can get 400 mb/s. And antenna should make a big difference.
Is it possible to add a parabolic reflector to this in case 5G masts are further away or weaker signal than expected?
Oh no - that antenna will spread covid19
Thanks for sharing that design very interesting
Good tip about soldering onto large planes

Great work Andrew, I'm in the process of ordering parts to build this for my Three 5G router which spends most of its time in 4G mode due to the weak 5G signal, currently at -98bBm. I'll let you know how it works out.
Just about to do exactly the same... I am on the very fringes of 5g.
The router is a 4g5g MIMO... So i need to build 4 😂

How did you go mate? @G-Cam1
Great work ❤
Really a grt video to learn sir...Can you share the calculating method for driver elements
Very nice piece of work, Andrew. While the frequency dependent reflectance (S11) that you have shown is a key parameter of the antenna the actual gain of the antenna (relative to isotropic) and the spatial distribution of that gain are also interesting and important. Can you provide any information on measurements of this antenna? NEC and other simulations are good yet nothing beats a solid measurement if available.
Thank you so much. Can you give us the measurements to space these out for a 4x4 mimo setup? On a plexiglass mounting surface plate maybe?
I was wondering the exact same...
Ok. But what do you hook it to? I'm in a container. Is there a way to utilize this?
Some needs to prepare these parts in a kit..
Круто! Если даже в развитых странах делают самодельные антенны, то нам и подавно можно
Thanks for this Andrew. Is there any chance you could explain the calculations used to determine the size of the parts and the positioning of the feed hole. With this info one is in a better position to play knowing what changes are likely to do what. Building to a recipe is fine but understanding the basics enable one to come up with new recipes that are more likely to work than they are without the information.
I used to make longer videos explaining a lot of this but people complained I talked too much. I do plan to make a more general video explaining how the measurements work like this with panel antennas.
Superb video Andrew thanks... I'd like to build an higher gain LTE+ antenna to work with 2600mhz in a 4x4 Mimo arrangement. What changes would be needed to adapt an antenna like this?
Regards Andy
@@andrewmcneil your knowledge is invaluable, you don't talk too much. In a sea of falsely advertised e-junk destined sadly for landfill you provide help and solutions.
Now you've built this though I would love to see you put it through your normal tests on the scope etc.
Andrew this is amazing, don’t suppose you have a parts list specially the semi rigid Sma ?
Thank you!!
Do the spacers need to be non-metal?
Shame you don't sell these - I don't have the skill set or tools

@@andrewmcneil thanks got any of those biquad circuit boards made yet?
@@grandpaseed No I have been working on version 2 but I have been too busy.
I am going to build your antenna design for my 5G home router (Nokia Fastmile).
I am curious if it would work just as well if I put multiple assemblies on one big back plane? I think I seen you do it with your biquad design so I am asking if you think it will also work on this design. I might do a 4 element array to capture all the diversity outputs in this router (and maybe a second one for the LTE radios).
Thank you!
Hi Andrew
You are sharing precious information!
thanks a million for your time.
I have one question if allow me to ask.
If i want to do double wire. could i make extra hole mirror to original hole on driven part ?
How thick is it? You said 5mm. Did you mean 0,5mm? 😁

Hi Andrew, thanks for your videos, I've the makings of your dish mounted biquad and your updated 3/4/5g flat biquad design, just waiting for a bit of time to start them!.
This design is a beaut, could it be mounted outside as it is or would it need an enclosure?
Also, how would you make it to fit two external antenna ports on my router? Would i need to build 2 antennas and plug each in its own separate port?
Thanks again from Ireland 🇮🇪
Looks amazing, Andrew can you make a video of how to calculate and make from this something like you did for 5G wifi with 4 antennas?
Hi Sir Can you share the formula used for parasitic element calculation?
How do u make an indoor unit so that my mobile phone signal can be boosted?
@andrew mcneil nice video. I have tried 2 5g antennas and did nothing. What kind are the black parts inside and the washers? just black metal or something else? Thanks😀
Great video... Would this antenna be suitable for 4G areas and I am presuming this is directional.... what would you recommend for omnidirectional?

Hello dear sir...
I have been following you for years and I am a big fan of your designs, so please give me your attention.
I will make the model in a 4*4 way because my router has 4 5g ports and I will put it in one box and I will put it On a plate of 120 cm and it will be very strong and mighty.
I need you to explain some concepts.
1- Can I change the nylon screws and do they have an alternative?
2- Is the large piece isolated from the rest of the pieces?
3- Is there any left? The whole pieces are connected to each other?
4- Can I use anything other than nylon?
I promise to photograph the entire work for you. I have very strong previous experiences, but this work will be imaginary. dealing with you.
the coaxial cable you solder its connected each other or separate
Hello, there should be a diagram with the sizes and space of each piece..I was scratching my head while I was scratching the Portuguese to English translator with subtitles.. to describe the measurements..still I couldn't and I didn't understand anything...if it's real ..you are the first to "DEMONSTRATE" the feat.. on the web...

@@stevemacbr No problem the biggest factors or the dielectric constant and the thickness of the dielectric. It is interesting to see how some materials can have a huge effect of the measurements.
@@andrewmcneil - Exactly. I own a PS100 Vextor Analyser,... and a LCR analyser,... so these give me a clue to the direction I need to go in.

Hello, can you make a wifi Dual-Band 2.4 + 5 antenna with your own hands ?
tried the same with aluminium can absolutely not get the tin to stick on the reflector, using a heat gun and everything, the alu even started to smoke, but tin would just drop of like droplets... my guess is it's because my tin is with lead and the alu is andonized as well, did try to sand it though. but I guess i'll get some lead free and untreated aluminium.
You can solder to bare aluminum with tin/lead solder. However, the problem is that aluminum oxidizes so easily and solder won't stick to aluminum oxide. You need to clean down to bare aluminum and then somehow keep any oxygen from getting to the aluminum while you heat it. There are special aluminum soldering fluxes you can get, or some people say to coat the aluminum with oil before heating.
Another technique(the one I use) is to build up a puddle of solder on the aluminum. The aluminum oxidizes under the puddle so it doesn't stick, but while still heating, use a sharp probe or sharp soldering tip to scrape away the oxidation under the puddle. The solder puddle will roll around on flat aluminum oxide layer so I often press a small dimple in the aluminum to keep it in place until I scrape away the oxidation.

Hi. Thanks for this project. I am going to try to build one for USA 5G/LTE. Can I use a thinner metal? I have 0.15mm stainless that I can laser cut to size. :)
Yes 👍👍
Would you be able to use a coax cable to connect this to a 5g router for better reception?
Sir, what is the actual frequency of a 5.8G region
Why brass is used, not copper or aluminum ?
I like working with it and it looks nice
@@andrewmcneilUsing some other conductors affects the gain of the antenna ?
@@divyamohan8442 Not at this level, yes copper is a better conductor than aluminium and silver is a better conductor than copper. But to try and measure the difference in the performance of an antenna you would need some very expensive equipment. And in the real world of what we use them for it would not make any difference. In fact, if you go into any professional RF lab you would find most of their reference antennas are made from brass. Reason being it is more durable and harder than copper and does not tarnish like copper.
just don't use lead 😁
@@andrewmcneil Thankyou Sir
Sir, can I use a standard 75ohm cable to connect with the antenna and what difference will that make for 1m length of the cables?

As an amateur radio operator, I was looking at this to use 5.8Ghz which is with 5.7875Ghz center and 275Mhz bandwidth (5.625 - 5.925Ghz). Should I just scale every dimension by .864 (your template and spacers at 5Ghz to my 5.7875Ghz)?
Correction: I realized that your frequencies are 3.3Ghz - 3.8Ghz. So my scaling should be .6133? So 18mm diameter would change to 11mm for me.
Sir how did u find the dimensions for this... Can u please share the design equation
will this antenna also pickup 4G?
How far apart should be positioned the 2 anrannas?
You would need to experiment running speed tests as there is not set distance. It depends on your distance from the tower.
Is your antenna effective in the 1800hz range in Vietnam? Looking forward to hearing from you.
Tất nhiên là hoạt động rồi 4g tần số 900 mhz không ổn định nên mình cũng làm 2 cái cho mr200

you should try the sleeve monopole antenna with cantenna, I also make it but the problem is 1.8, 2.3, 2.5Ghz band is slow at my place so I need a 700mhz antenna because it's the only one that have good speed👌👍
Next video is a dish feed for 5G but I also have a 4G on the way
Has anyone tried this and what sort of speed increase over 5 did you get? Thinking of trying this mainly because there doesn’t seem to be anything that great available to buy
If we put 4 (or more) of these in parralell, will the gain add up also?

Would be pure copper better material for antenna?
Can i use a normal tv cable or any preferred cable needed
Could I use 16swg aluminium sheet? Thanks
probably a silly question but could something like this be used for bouncing the 5G signals toward your property?
In other words not connected to anything but used solely as a bouncer and director of the 5G signals obviousley the radiator would not be needed.
I want something that will take the signals from the 5G tower about 800M away from my flat and then bounce those signals directly into my window of my flat.
No thats not how antennas work sorry
@@andrewmcneil OK I thought so, now this leads me to another question.
How would one go about making this into a 4X4 MIMO Antenna Array?
I know I will need 4 of them but what about spacing between each antenna?
What would the spacing need to be between antennas side by side, I.E, 2 on top and 2 bellow, like a 4 on a dice, for a 4X4 MIMO antenna array?
Hoping you can answer this or make a video on the topic as you are the antenna GURU
How would you adjust the design for LTE band 7 Uplink 2500-2560 (Downlink 2620-2680)?
It would probably effect the function of it at other frequencies but you can do the math to make one it just will have very different characteriristics.
you didnt mention the material type of bolt and nuts

Do you sell these?
Hey Andrew, is this directional? I live in a block of units and the signal bounces off walls. Do I need to point it in the approximate direction?

hi andrew. if i use dish on this antenna, flipping it backward so that it face the dish, is it possible? my theory is that using dish will improve the signal as the dish reflect the signal.
