- In this video we take a closer look at Beat Juggling by going to it's root: using 2 copies of a record to "juggle" or extend a beat on a record. This technique was what started hip-hop music (actually!) and is an essential tool for any DJ. Watch Skratch Bastid as he works through patterns on the fly, and discusses getting 'the feel' of it.

I like how you are having fun no mater what. Makes you less robotic as a DJ.
I love the “working through mistakes” and i love that you didn’t edit or redo this. This is real! 💯
appreciate you actually showing you recovering from mess ups. #respect
so cool dude on the decks…ty to share all this knowledge and spirit…your videos are awesomes
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS VIDEO IS THAT HE SHOWS US HIS MISTAKES
Nice vid bro! It's all about keeping it funky and having fun on the decks!
This is so philosophically sound. My younger brother is just starting out and i told him it is fine to make mistakes, especially while practicing.. this way he can learn from his mistakes and learn how to recover from them. Sometimes mistakes become new techniques.. I've made mistakes and was like wow.. that was dope. I need to reenact that and add that to my resume
TURNTABLES - THE HEART AND SOUL OF A TRUE DJ.
*I totally agree with you !! Greetings from France!!*
Aaliyoh Von Kex no one asked
Dude this makes me so much more comfortable when I practice. Thanks man I’m really trying to do this.
Thank you so much for showing your mistakes and showing we're all human. Love your work
I found you because of sysk. You’re amazing at this and entertaining!
Great explanation I love how your just having fun and playing with the beats. Thank you I learn a lot from your videos. It's def not easy it takes a shitload of practice. You've put in your 10,000 hours for sure
Appreciate the narration as you demonstrate. So helpful to break it down and educational.
what also helps me is looking at the grooves you can kind of see where the break begins if halfway in a song....when it starts at the beginning you can kind of know you have less than 30 seconds before the singing begins so you can play at the beginning a bit more...regarding matching the beat it takes practice and for me I count the times the platter has turned so I can put snare back before the other finishes...The legend Grandmaster Flash explain it really well...
I have the whole ultimate breaks and beats catalog Vol. 1 to 25 definitely comes in hand
I really needed to see this! I hold you in super high regard and seeing you work through is dope....
Love the "Work Thru Mistakes" that is very important! I tend to overthink and forget its about having fun and enjoyment!
Dude, I'm an oldskool DJ/Rapper been looking names for the beats, You the MAN!! just a few :)
Great vid! I actually like it when the first vocal comes in for a split second. Even if it was unintentional it made for a cool sample! Gonna find this track myself lol
Dude best dj tutorials hands down keep it up homslice!!
love the passion.
thanks...thats exactly what im trying to figure out
That was awesome Bastid!
That Big Beat drum always gets me moving, without fail...
I love how you showed us your little mistakes! Thats how we all get better
Awesome thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed this video. You was really having fun doing it.
Its crazy... I learned to beat juggle...with Big Beat. That's the song that unlocked it for me.
Great video dude 🔥🙌💿
Yo thanks Scratch Bastid !! Much props ! Peace
Man this was so cool to watch this is the kind of thing I want to do I just need a turntable set
to find where to scratch easier you should look at your laptop and scratch when the lines are not blank on the dj software
praticing without headphones is a great way to practice. makes you rely on your eye/hand coordination more and makes you that much quicker
Jose Lugo Wrong
You know you're watching a really good DJ when even his mistakes sound good and unnoticeable.
cool laid back feelings !
Dizzee rascal also used the big beat drum sample for “fix up look sharp” so might be easier to find on 12” etc
You're an awesome teacher...
impresionante tu colección de vinilos, que marca son tus platos y tu mixer saludos de La Paz - Bolivia
what kind of slipmat did you Use? my slipmat felt so rough so I can't spin back the vinyl in a good way. thank you.
Very cool!
great video series :)
Is it possible to beat juggle over top of a beat using 3 channels? If so would you need at least a 3 channel mixer or would you need 2, 2 channel mixers? In the case of a 2x2 mixer situation how would you set the equipment up?
You’re a legend
Any Chance we can get a tutorial on organization for Serato crates
FUN! No headphones needed! skillz
Awesome tips! I am new to djing and have a NV. Can this be done on a NV2 numark and if so, do you have any tutorials of you showing us how? Thanks!
Sure can....
Awsome
That was a great video. The only thing I can't figure out what to cue in my headphones when juggling.
I guess the short answer is that you shouldn't use headphones! :)
Isn’t beat juggling good for Jamaica’s dancehall music?
that Real shit...skratch badtid.$100...I HAD THEM DAYS..LOL
Awesome! When you said "I gotta fix my needles" what did you mean by that? I'v been a DJ for 25 years, but only on tables for the past year. So I need to learn more about the table itself. Thanks!
Probably in the sense that the needles were kind of worn and didn't have the same tracking as a fresh pair so it can cause the needle to skip out of the groove.
Justin Kanoya he was talking about adjusting the needles, and quite possibly the weight too
I'd actually recommend starting by simply looping doubles of the same record. Take a bridge and make it a back and forth loop. It can be a 4 bar loop, a 1 bar loop, whatever but loop first. THEN shorten the loop to get some speed and precision and a good eye for tracking your marking. THEN start actually freestyling and learning how to create new beats from the one you are juggling.
exelente
If u give this a thumbs down your a stone could hater smh...
The platter on those decks seem a bit too raised, you can see it tilt a bit with the weight of his hand. Are those reloops any good?
I'm just finding out that you had a DJ /Skratch School! What you didn't explain in this video though was, it you miss the beginning of the beat (in the case where you might be 1 or 2 record revolutions either before or after the start of the beat you want to scratch), how can you find the beginning of the beat quickly if you are not using headphones (and you did not look at your laptop software). And isn't that a lot harder to do if the beat you want to scratch is in the middle of the record instead of at the very beginning?
Where can I find the ultimate breaks and beats collection? It's not on iTunes
discogs.com
The dude always look like he having a good time.. Nice.. Funky!!!😋
I know I’m mad late but f*ck it. This is a dope video!! Don’t stress the mistakes but enjoy
The Gimmicks and Keep on Keeping On
Is it a pass pass technic ?
Paul. I need more Party Vibes and hawt sauce. When are you coming back to the Hammer?
what is that name of that record?
This performance no laptop?
This is what I admire and like to see. Real vinyls being juggled. Computer DJs now just press a restart button and start the song over at the right time. No skill at all. Gj dude.
nice to know you are in fact human Mr Bastid.
What song is this???
Beat Juggling is the OG Rhythem Game. Beat Saber, Rock Band, This is your father..
How about some MFSB, "Love is the Message!"
Sketch Bastid, what are the differences of Serato & Trackor(Major & Minor)?.
serato doesn't work traktor dose
Maybe you just couldn't understand the Serato manual because all the words were spelled correctly.
Lol @ "dose"...idiot.
These are just tools. Use both and figure out what works best for you.
Please talk me this song name?
is this juggling same as keep pressing a hot cue?
Yes, essentially....
What's your thought on the DJM-s9?
don1mega it's the best mixer out
don1mega true battle mixer. The rane mixer is uncomfortable to me now.
dope to do that without headphones
You dont want to use headphones in this situation
ahh the big beat.Little did Billy Squire know what would come next
Base for the RUN DMC Feat Aerosmith
Thank you for showing us the mistakes. I’m so glad to know you are actually human. 😂
It's great no cue point's for once!!! Dmc shit 2channel mixer vinyl
i dont ever use headphones when im beatjuggling and scratching. i.havent even touched my headphones in a long time
At 1:57 I started hearing Mac Miller at 2011 XXL Freshman lol
I think I would just listen to Grand Master Flash or Jazzy Jeff to explain how to cut records up.
Fix up look sharp
nice basic explaining yo
Dj Steve Dee. Only Real DJ’s will know
yes-thank you for mentioning him -a good friend and the father of the beat juggling phonemon
Headphones are needed haha
#sortkwik
Grandmaster Flash uses a white crayon to do this.
Are you shure that this is beat juggling ? Because back in the day.. this was called cutback.. An beat juggling was making a beat from 1 record (Kick, Snare, Hihat)..
Askin from a friend !!
@Your cutback is tight.
The TRACK is on! The TRACK is on!
RUN DMC SAMPLED THIS...
So did 281 other artists. www.whosampled.com/Billy-Squier/The-Big-Beat/sampled/
Cant mention the technique of "beat juggling" without mentioning the person who made it popular.the "father" of beat juggling -THE CUT TECHNICIAN DJ STEVE DEE.
It would be beneficial to everyone if you stated that hip hop is not a musical genre or form (per se)
but is a cultural element that makes up a whole.
Hmmmmm Interesting.🤔
why not just count the rotation of ur mark instead of pulling back the needle. coool vid anyway.
Pulling back the needle is used when the track has gone a long time and pulling back the record would take a longer time.
I was expecting a flawless performance...
