To put this in perspective, Les and Kirk from Metallica were friends in high school. Kirk is actually in the John the Fisherman video. Les was invited to audition for bass after Cliff died. It was very apparent to all parties involved that Les was destined for different things. Chops for days but way too weird for Metallica. But the music world is all the better for it.

Les and Larry were in Blind Illusion for their debut album, The Sane Asylum (as thrash metal classic) and Larry was a founding member of Possessed (he joined Blind Illusion when Possessed got disbanded in 1987), one of the first death metal bands. Les and especially Larry (vis a vis Larry and Kirk having Joe Satriani as their guitar teacher) have ties to just about every band in the early thrash, shred, and death metal scenes.

I think it might help these guys a bit to think of Primus as a more light hearted Tool. Primus and Tool are very similar bands in many ways, they have a lot of the same influences. They’re kinda a yin to the other’s yang, Tool occupy the dark introspective shadow of self exploration, Primus are a bit more overt in playfulness with a little bit more explicit virtuosity. Tool plays with an element of humor as a counterweight, Primus plays with some darker themes at times as their counter.
    Both excellent bands.

What's interesting to me is that Claypool's vocals remind me of Mustaine's, but it seems that people are more tolerant of Dave's vocals because of the style of music Megadeth plays... Which makes no sense to me, considering the comedy of Primus.

Hey Guys - thanks for trying Primus again. I’ve been listening to them since Fall 1990 when John the Fisherman debuted on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. The precision and tightness of that song reached my inner Rush’ness. I ran out and got Frizzle Fry. The jam here and in Groundhog’s Day blew my mind. It was revolutionary, especially coming from a steady diet of Rush, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Metallica and some hair metal bands. Napster was a great thing as it broke the stranglehold on what one could here living in a rural area. MTV helped, too.
The jams on Frizzle were so astounding. I’m sure I drove my housemates mad when I blasted this album. Check out Speghetti Western. Herky-jerky, off kilter, but funky and heavy, it is still one of my favorite songs.
Les was extremely conscious of his voice. He knew he wasn’t a singer, so he adopted personalities to convey the story. To me, the humor is an addition to the creativity and talent. I still laugh at the last lines of Mr. Knowitall.
Les’ stories are thoughtful (on the military, corporations, our degradation of the environment), dark & twisted at times, and then flavored with humor here and there.
It took more than a decade, but Stewart Copeland encouraged him to try singing. He can in his own way. As a whole, Primus is a I like it or I don’t like it for most people. It took me a while, but Les’ side projects work for me, too. The Claypool Lennon Delerium might be his best. Like Pink Floyd meets The Beatles meets psychedelic prog-rock and Primus. They are great live.
Jerry the Racecar Driver is a great song. How or why My Name is Mud was a hit still boggles my mind. The 1990s were interesting times culturally.
Wynona is the song most people I know that people I meet later in life know and like. It is way catchy.
You have so much music to cover, but maybe you could squeeze in Red State Girl from one of Les’ solo projects. You might like it for the atmosphere and musicianship. The love acoustic version on WNYC’s RUclips channel is a version to behold.
BTW, I saw Primus open for Anthrax and Public Enemy in Alabama when they all toured in 1991. I was blown away again. Primus could pull off all that crazy musicianship live.
I love this redemption tour. Really love what you two do
