Hey Carl! I was involved in the neighborhood watch program in Los Angeles, Ca. Do some research on it. In my zone we had 12 "watchmen" each with a walkie talkie and reported to each other when there was someone suspicious about. We coordinated with a Senior Lead Officer with the LAPD and had his cell phone on speed dial. Those neighborhoods that participated in this program knocked down all types of crime quickly. Former LAPD Chief William Bratton instituted "The broken window policy." Look it up. He invented this concept in NYC then brought it to L.A. We started with signs nailed to telephone poles on every street "This is a neighborhood watch zone, etc" Also you can buy some fake security cameras real cheap, and place them in strategic places. Zero tolerance towards graffiti...we had it always painted over within 24 hours. Many aspects of the above can absolutely work in (your much smaller than L.A.) community.

You need intel. Establish a no-questions-asked telephone number like El Salvador did. Somebody knows who the criminals are and will do the right thing as long as they can remain anonymous.

@@joel6427 - when I was sheriff I implemented this strategy. Someone called our hotline number. A number was assigned to that person and the area they are our eyes and ears

I am relieved to see the local community, local officials & the expat community coming together in force to strategize, come up with solutions to prevent these awful crimes & assaults from being committed. After some searching on the internet, i found out what happened a few weeks ago in June & was shocked. For sure these are gangs from outside of Ecuador that are coming through & targeting people. I have full faith that they will all be caught & justice will be served🙏🏼🙏🏼
This will not deter me from moving there & living in this beautiful place. This is a test. Like Jesse said Faith over fear.💛

This is very bold of you to post this for people like myself considering relocating to Vilcabamba. Rather than scaring me off, it has actually increased my desire to experience Vilcabamba. The sense of community that is always mentioned on this channel is clearly demonstrated here.
I understand that many in your community felt insulated from the issues of cartels and crime. that is prevailing in other areas of Ecuador. Despite the ruthlessness and immorality of these gangs, they have unfortunately provided income to thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of families. Addressing this issue will require a determined and persistent effort against these criminals. However, it’s equally important to develop opportunities throughout Ecuador to diminish the allure of criminal activities as a means of earning a livelihood. There has to be a replacement of that money from honest means. If not, this cycle will persist, trust will be lost, and fear will prevail. That sense of community that seems to be a source of great pride in Vilcabamba will wither and be ever so difficult to revive.

I agree. The persistance is very important. Tocache and Uchiza , 2 towns in the upper amazon region were took over by small drug lords. While countries as Colombia or Mexico failed , Peru took action and defeated them. Now both towns replaced coca leaves for cacao and coffee pineapple , etc. This happened 30 years ago. Colombian gangs are in Peru producing that white substance , deep , very deep in the jungle Unfortunately USA stopped suporting airplane interdiction and technology for taking down narco-colombian-planes. DEA and USAID were doing great job in the past time too, but now US help is almost zero.

Quite honestly, I have been planning for years on making Vilcabamba my home and in fact scheduled my move several months ago, but after hearing of the major increase of needless violence, especially against gringos, I postponed my move and have been considering other areas. Great Move Vilcabamba ! We were in Vilcabamba in 2012 - 2013 - 2014 for a few month each year. We felt safe and enjoyed the people and the land. What you are doing is very important for everyone in the community. Blessings to your efforts.

What the woman said at the end is so true., and it works both ways. Immigrants and locals need to see each other as neighbours. Unfortunately I have heard that many immigrants don’t mix with the locals and viceversa. It breaks my heart to see this happening in the world. Up here in Canada isn’t different, we have had few stabbings in the past few months. Really sad.

Many locals do see the immigrants as neighbors here and vise versa. It’s like anything though… not all immigrants are upstanding(regardless of which country they’ve immigrated from). The local community is strong and appears united to stand against these crimes… time will tell… faith over fear! ❤️ 🙏

I’m planning on traveling to Ecuador October 1 - March 30. Vilcabamba is my primary destination. Seems to be such a beautiful place. If all goes well I may move there permanently. However these events are concerning. I hope authorities can find those responsible so people can feel safe.

In the 4 corners robbery the victim just came back from selling crypto currency and he had $25k in cash when he got home. Some bandit knew this. The victim also left all his doors open and gate unlocked. You have to be smarter than that!!!

Tourist and expats are priority here. Natasha Crombrugghe a young belgium woman get lost at huge Colca Canyon. Policia de montaña , TV journalism , newspapers , mayors , private montañistas , dogs , drones , coordination with Belgiun Embassy , etc working together. She felt down. It took a lot of time finding her body , but finally was found. we showed respect and condolence for her lovely family.

Sad day for the community, Vilcabamba residents and expats who love living there. More of a shock to those hearts set on retiring to Vilcabamba, opening businesses or didn’t plan on security as a fact of life in Vilcabamba - I knew it not immune but neither rampant violence with all its local influences. Ecuador has either been invaded by outlaws seeking property under duress, rent-seeking banditos or desperados and the latter I hope not.
Kudos to Carl, “Abundant” crew for live coverage and interview context bumper. Great dedication and action all around!
Local probs here in Panama quelched with privateex-Seal interdiction in adobes really put the word out and policing check points carded every vehicle in-out and people did prison time - stemmed growth.
The Tijuana solution evolved high walled compound for several homes inside, guard shack and 24/7/365 live-ammo private guards.
LA solution was Viet guns rootop - that ended Chino robbery

This is a wise decision by the Vilcabamba authorities to quickly address security concerns. Word travels quickly and bad press can ruin entire regions just like the situation in Manabi areas due to drugs and violence against innocent people.

Just got back from a tour of the coast. { buses and taxis ) New motorcycle arrived. Next trip Vllcabamda. Assume i'll be relativity safe. I have been to places that look sketchy by USA midwestern standards. But always treated extremely well. USA driving privileges have expired ( working on that ) If I decide to take a bus. Is there a scooter rental available for exploring ? Salinas had some. Gracias

We should see what Peru's been doing the last 20 years to control crimes , actually one of the lowest homicide rate per 100k people (6), versus Mexico 24 , Colombia 26 , Ecuador 44 , Uruguay 12 .
What are they specifically doing? Homicide rates per capita are misleading when analyzing the entire country. More granular data tells a more clear picture.

besides regular police , organized private police hired by mayors across the country SERENAZGO ..... Most members of serenazgo are trained using regular police procedures following regulations and support by law. Serenazgo could be exmembers of army or similar careers

@@AbundantLivingEcuadorTV and newspaper journalism is key factor. Delincuentes are shown full face , receiving denuncias policiales , helping victims to be listened , showing bad police for being kick out of PNP.
And one more question @abundant living. With the disturbances with gangs and some foreigners fleeing, are you noticing property price drops or people much more willing to negotiate? I am still very interested in Vilca but I think it got very expensive in recent years, compared to other parts of the country.
The market is generally slower here. The velocity of transactions has slowed some but it’s never a rapid turnover, high volume market in the first place. The beauty here is that negotiation is built in to the culture so most sellers are flexible. Some may be more flexible now.
Why hasn't Abundant Living started a crime fighting team? Carl can walk shirtless on the street with a baseball bat next to his trusty sidekick Brandon and Jesse can mastermind the logistics from his hammock. You could use The Final Countdown as a theme song

@@AbundantLivingEcuador Nah dude. From what I'm hearing, there's only a handful of officers and they're not following up on police reports. Meanwhile, they're pestering gringos for cedulas in the town's square. That recent event with the lady and her husband is extremely disturbing. Hopefully locals and expats can come up with a decent plan. Even having Brandon walk around at night shouting "woo!" like Ric Flair is a better idea than hoping the police will do their jobs.

That is precisely what the sign at the first second of the video says. This is the sign that was held at the very front of the march the whole time.
So what's in place to help reduce these?

Was wondering if recent events has actually effected your day to day living? I.e. you are now taking more security precautions/ not going out at night etc. or is it more the case, yes, this is a bit concerning but pretty much your day to day lives are the same as before?
You nailed it with the latter… it’s definitely concerning and it’s great to see the local community uniting to combat this…but I’m still going out at night, day to day unchanged, ect.

With the criminals being the only ones having weapons, it will be difficult to deter the behavior. My wife is from Quevedo and they are having a hard time dealing with the same problem. Ecuador needs to look at the big picture here and fight fire with fire.
Immigrants and locals also have firearms… maybe those being targeted do not. Self defense laws in Ecuador are also different… we’ve heard locals discuss tribal justice though… Thanks for watching Samuel!

Ecuador is still ranked a tio destination for retirement Dont let fear stop from coming down. I live on the coast, yes different area but super safe here.
Ecuador isn’t for most people… we say that all the time! We still love it and have faith in the community. We share what this place is from our perspective in an authentic way. It either resonates with you or it doesn’t. ❤️ 🙏
Something to consider: You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you're capable of violence. I know this this is a difficult concept to digest but from a criminal's point of view if you're not prepared to defend yourself you're not peaceful, you're harmless!
It's an important distinction and something I hope the expat community in the Vilca-Malacatos area is able to understand and is willing to take to heart.
Criminals prefer unarmed victims. The previous president of Ecuador made it easier to legally defend oneself in Ecuador. A strong stance could be very helpful in deterring criminals from perceiving Vilca as an easy target full of "peaceful" well to do expats ripe for home invasion and violent robbery. Just a thought.

They must create a toll that is at the entrance of the road that leads to Vilcabamba, a toll with guards that way you control who among whom leaves as a sentry box for the entire town
