The Symphonic Picture "The Dazhangxi River" was written when I was assigned to work at No. 1 Middle School in Yantai, Shandong Province, right after graduating from university. Seeing the surging waves in the Bohai Bay reminded me of my hometown, the Minjiang River. I felt homesick and was inspired by the invitation of my classmate Lin Lisong to visit his hometown, Yongtai County, when I was in the second year of high school in 1948. I took a small wooden boat upstream on the Dazhangxi River and saw the boatmen fighting against the water and the green mountains on both sides of the river. The music was written based on the boatmen's song and other musical themes.
