Always loved Smoky. Class man. Saw him in Toronto at Ontario Place in late 80s. He was in between songs chatting with the audience. He then said any requests and me from mid way back yelled “Second That Emotion”. I must of hit some voice travelling funnel cause my voice carried above all others. Smoky looked my way, saw me with my girl (my wife now of 29 years) amd said this one’s for the cat with the loud voice and his good looking girl and he went right into the song. I’ll never forget it.
Ah.. that’s class.. Great memory for you and thank you for sharing..Smokey is a legit legend within the music industry.. Across all genres over the last 50 years plus.. Bonkers that.. nothing but respect.. 👏👏👏👏
Of all celebrities I ever met, he was the coolest. I was setting up his stage show and seen him walk in, I jus yelled out, “ Yo, Smokey. “ and he can over gave me a hug and was asking how I was, and what’s happening. He then showed me the correct way to handle your celebrity; he walked to to each of the crew and shook hands thanking them for their hard work, and making us laugh. He was the epitome of class, and made you feel the capacity of his love. He is the man. Much respect to Smokey, oh and we hung out in a secret room in the back of the club and heard him slay, sounding better than ever, and that was 25 years ago. Never forget it.
SMOKIE ROBINSON..... what a LEGEND.it's interesting to hear him tell stories about how he writes songs and where he gets the insperation for those legendary tunes.BLESS HIM.
My life would be without as much joy if there was no Smokey or Motown, hard not to feel good when I here those great old tunes. Like a warm blanket, just so comforting.
I gotta give it up for my parents they listened to Motown music when I was growing up and I wouldn't have the love I do for this kind of music without them.
The story Smokey tells here about the session guitarist coming up with the riff for My Girl on his own is a reminder that the line between a composition and an arrangement can be a blurry one. Sometimes an arrangement can include melodic content, as is the case here with that extremely catchy guitar riff that no doubt added to the appeal/success of the record. But in the end he gets no credit as the composer, so no royalties. At least Smokey credits him here, but I'm guessing he would have preferred credit on the copyright.
No blurred lines in my mind about it. The song is the chord changes , the main melody and the lyrics. Everything else is arrangement . Studio players have always contributed to the arrangement. That don't make 'em songwriters.
@@zdave6083 Wrong. The chord changes, melody and lyrics are bare bones. Give it to a sad singer, a sad arranger, and some sucky musicians and that "song" will be as bland as your response. If you've ever played in a band you would know that a change in one member changes the entire sound. Music is a collaborative process. And it is an injustice that Robert White or any of the Funk Brothers never got royalties (although later they got credit) for their creativity, no matter how much their "contributions" are used or sampled. That's what happens when you turn art into someone's private property. PS: Ask Clyde Stubblefield what he thinks.
@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 that gtr riff that y'all are so enamored of was by that time one of the first things a beginner player learns. Just tossing in a tired lick don't make you a writer.
Take some time to look up Smokey's guitarist mentioned here - Marv Tarplin. He's everywhere in Smokey's discography as a co-songwriter, as well as hits for many other Motown acts.
The guitar riff, for My Girl, is a simple pentatonic scale. Just play the black keys on a piano in ascending order starting with F# in the appropriate rhythm.
Smokey is Smokey and he's hot to me regardless and I'm not even into light skinned brothas🥰❤️🖤💚 and Smokey will still get paid because to my knowledge he wrote the song# all of Motown wins including the fans🥰❤️🖤💚
Smokey Robinson: A musical genius and a living legend.
True ❤️🖤💚
And apparently he’s skint
For sure a living legend. I love him singing ooh Baby Baby.
Absolutely!
I got to meet Smokey in 2019. They say don't meet your heroes, but I met one and he was everything I'd hoped he'd be. A true class act.
....was just listening to Cruisin.. while driving and I believe that's one of the most perfect and greatest songs ever.

Smoky providing a snapshot into the origins for some this planet's most beloved songs.
So many legendary artist's emerging from one record label and the city of Detroit. Berry Gordy Jr. shook up the world with Motown Records!

I was raised on a lot of Motown and this man was such a key part of building that label
So true!
The live version of 'Ooh Baby Baby' he did with Aretha Franklin is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've heard.
God bless Smokey!
IVE BEEN HEARING THE SONG "BEING WITH YOU" ALL WEEK.IN MY MIND ...a song my mother played often when I was a child.
His bank account isn't sorry he gave those songs to other acts
Jamal 🤣🤣🤣👍
Fair, but he would've made more if he was the writer AND singer.
@@PyroLeo1 writer makes 75 percent wtf r u saying lol
@@jimmymekkawi8977 and if you're the writer AND the artist, you probably the writer's %75 and a portion for also being the artist, so that's more!

Great stories
"Smokey Robinson is America's greatest living poet" Bob Dylan
A gifted legend.
Being With You is one of his best. The bass on that is so smooth.
Smokey, Stevie, Marvin.. that's all I need

Hmm I thought it was Dennis Coffey
One of the absolute best song writers in LIFE, love ya Smokey, I go back with you in the late fifties.
He didn't give away his songwriter ownership; he wrote it and the Temps had a gigantic hit.
Going to see him soon. Can’t wait!!!!
It's amazing how young and vibrant he looks after all these years.👍
What a musical Genius
Take some time to look up Smokey's guitarist mentioned here - Marv Tarplin. He's everywhere in Smokey's discography as a co-songwriter, as well as hits for many other Motown acts.
one of the greatest to ever do it!
Smokey and Babyface wrote so many major hits on the down low and so many people have no clue.
Greatest voice of all time
I love Smokey. his 80s material is great too
80s? Smokey was retired at that time.
So brilliant.
Awesome
He created music that is no longer made in today's world.
Smokey on Daryls House was great. He and Daryl sing great together.
Mr.Robinson must have found the fountain of youth because it seems like he doesn't age🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I agree,...he's gotta be 70+ in this clip. ....not to dis his genes,...but he probably also had a facelift.
LEGEND!
Priceless!
Gotta be on the Mount Rushmore of the music industry
He's a national treasure, but I don't think so.
Now this is A Real Talent! It is very Sad Times .We are living in 2021..When? Buddy Mercury is Considered a Top 3 Musical Talent in the World.
Everyone should watch Standing In The Shadows Of Motown to learn about The Funk Brothers.
Smokey is the GOAT.

He wrote MY GIRL and he smoked crack with VANITY. What a life!
The guitar riff, for My Girl, is a simple pentatonic scale. Just play the black keys on a piano in ascending order starting with F# in the appropriate rhythm.
Modern artist should ask for his help and advice they might have longer lasting careers
Does anyone know where I can hear the full interview
Smokey is Smokey and he's hot to me regardless and I'm not even into light skinned brothas🥰❤️🖤💚 and Smokey will still get paid because to my knowledge he wrote the song# all of Motown wins including the fans🥰❤️🖤💚
Smokey said, " Hell nah, I didn't mind giving the Temps, My Girl. After all, Barry and I did keep ALL the money."
Greatest writers
1. R. Kelly
2. Smokey Robinson
3. Stevie Wonder
Hmm interesting
How do you know that you're watching a Vietnam movie? You hear a song written by Smokey Robinson.
Wow, that's absolutely true!! Whoa!!!
FACTS!
I mean he still got a precentage right?
G.o.a.t in real time
You know he’s gone and played 18 holes after this.
With more than one woman, probably.
American ROYALTY..... don't give a shit about Charles and Elizabeth
I heard he got screwed over financially by record executives because he didn't have lawyers
He was the Vice President of Motown from 1965-88
He's still getting paid for the song. So what?
My Girl wouldn't have been the hit it was had Smokey recorded it. That song is all about David Ruffin.
Smokey Robinson was out of his mind back then.
Man, the dude looks good for his age. I guess 150 million net worth will keep the wrinkles off
