- When James Corden recaps his experience seeing the upcoming documentary "Hitsville: The Making of Motown," he admits that although the film is great, he prefers the soulful hits of today's artists. But when the legend Smokey Robinson shows up to challenge that idea, the two settle the debate with an old fashioned riff-off, thanks to a little help from The Filharmonic. Smokey performs his classic "Cruisin" and The Temptations "Get Ready," while James sings Bruno Mars "Finesse" and Lizzo's "Juice," before the two duet "My Girl."

For those that don't know, Detroit gave us Smokey, Stevie, Aretha and many other greats. It has a proud music history in soul, gospel, rap and rock. Motown had 79 top ten songs from 1960 to 1969. And the musicians "Funk Brothers" who played for Motown played on more number one records than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis and The Beach Boys combined.

And many people don't realize that he was one of the main writers for Motown and was responsible for Number 1 hits by the Supremes, The Temptations, The Marvelettes, Mary Wells and of course for himself and his group The Miracles. He even wrote a few songs for Marvin Gaye and Bobby Darin.

My mom told me this story that a long time ago when she worked for the USPS in Pasadena she went to the Vons near the Mac Robinson Post Office for lunch and Smokie was there introducing a food product I think it was jambalaya mix or gumbo mix.....there were a few workers from the post office and the store trying to get pictures with Smokie, out of nowhere he calls out my mom and plants a kiss on her cheek....she goes back to work on cloud 9, I don't know how long ago this was...but to this day when she talks about it her face lights up so much it makes me smile

Smokey, bright-eyed, feet-on-the-ground smooooooth, and from what I can tell, a great guy. This riff-off was silly, as all are, but it's cool that James does this. Just so great to hear and see Smokey. Hope his shows go swimmingly - blessings! Thanks, James, your talent is always a delight.

I've gotten the opportunity to see Smokey twice at the San Diego County Fair. I highly recommend seeing him live. He puts on a great show.
Thing about it, EVERYONE in the audience knew the words to the classic hits. There are a few, very few, current songs that can stand up with the classics.
