Rarely get the chance to see live but always look forward to a Gav show. Quite a few shows you mention the poor quality of some gels and preference for others - how much of a difference is there between them and how to tell the difference? Also, would love to see some sport style portraits in one of your shows (maybe including coloured smoke), there are others that demonstrate this but your ‘Gav’ style is so much easier to understand with your demonstrations.
Missed the live (again) ... but watching the recording. Lovely to see Sophie back (its been too long) ... she makes the "bad" pictures are gorgeous in their own right
Aww it's okay, good thing VODS are a thing! Like what they say: "while high-quality equipment are important, the beauty of the models or subjects is equally significant as well" ✨
The pictures with the Union Jack are fantastic! 🥰 Does Adorama also sell these to Germany or do I have to emigrate to the UK to be allowed to use the flag as a background? 😉
Hi Chris and thanks. No need to emigrate, you can totally use the Union Jack flag at home. All we ask is when you're done with it, simple bring it along to any Germany / England sporting event, wave it in the air and one of us will come and collect it from you 😉If no one see you, please shout "come on England" and I guarantee some will notice 🤣
Correct. My camera is set to record both RAW + Small JPG and both are sent to my laptop via the TetherTools USB-C cable. The software on my laptop is set to only show the JPG images as that has any in camera effects applied.
I'm I think my questions may of got missed. Is it possible to custom make lighting gels by using a printer on to them, and then cutting them? I tried searching for black paper, black vinyl, black fabric, black velvet, black silk, or something else. I don't know which one is best if I want to guarantee a black background?
Sorry for the delay. If you can print on clear film then I guess you could but real filters are heat proof (flashes get super hot!) and durable (the colour doesn't come off when scratched). For black the best fabric is anything with a non-shiny "matt" finish. Felt is great but expensive Jersey is cheap and stretchy, cotton is an OK choice but creases easily.
Great stuff !!! Thanks. Nice to see Sophie in the Studio !!!
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it interesting! It is great to have her back as she gives us a lot of beautiful shots 😊
Brilliant as always. I love my grey fabric background it’s my go to. Really liked the black and white photos ❤
Gavin is the true master!! Making amazing photos. Love the Hoey's family and Sophie team.
I was very inspired to try some new techniques, thanks Gavin!

Hi Gavin, when you use a GLow Ez Lock Beauty Dish softbox do you leave the Deflector Plate on? Thank you.
Hi Danny. Sorry for the late reply. No, I never use the deflector plates in any of my softboxes.
