I’ve been so inspired by Gavin and he makes learning off camera flash so easy. He is the sole reason for me to have ventured into off camera flash. I’m a motorsport shooter and never considered portraits, people and using off camera flash
Adorama, I bought a lot of camera gear from you, so please let Gavin continue to do more of these live sessions next year 2023! Wishing Gavin/Sam and the rest of your models a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2023.
Over the years I've learned a ton watching your videos. I started photography knowing very little about the craft, today I owe a debt of gratitude to you Gavin Hoey and adorama for the great content presented over the years. Thank you.
Great timing. I've been gathering the lights, candles, and lanterns to experiment with a similar, but not the same setup. You have added some new things to try. Thanks Gavin and Chloe.
Hi Gavin. Hope you are enjoying the festivities of the season. Always look forward to watching your tutorials. Tc my friend and stay blessed. Happy New Year to you and all the togs watching this with great passion like me.
I'd have watched live except that it was on at 5am eastern Australian time. So, I'll watch it at leisure. Thanks again for your videos. I've learned a lot from them.
These videos (especially with Gavin Hoey) has made me a better photographer! Keep them coming pretty please! And thank you so much for providing such fantastic and educational content!
Hello from Lake Village Indiana. Its pretty mild weather here. I am catching the live stream now just after it finished. Definitely ready to watch. Ive been at my 9 to 5 job but im ready for some photo therapy
I got here a minute too late but watch the whole thing and love it :)! Maybe Adorama would like to have a store in Perú as well ;)! THX for the stream Gavin, Sam, Faye and Chloe
Hey ,watching the replay from Chicago Illinois, -18 C with 20 mile an hour winds brrrrr, 0 degree F And I do know The Dexters Midnight Runners-Come On... :}
Great video Gavin merry Christmas, the layer on top the visibility was turn off, so in order for it to un gray it then you can use the Nick collection will then work just thought I would suggest that
Thank you Gavin, caught the end Live - now catching up with what I missed. Please keep doing what you are doing - You are All fabulous. Happy Christmas Chloe, Freya, Sam, Gavin and All.
These sessions are absolutely amazing and I’m really enjoying them, thanks a lot Gavin and the whole team 🙏. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year all of you 🎊
Coming from France mate, great to see another video. It's cold in France my first European winter and as an Australian it's cold here hahaha. Great content as always and would love to meet you in person for a shoot one-day. Have a great week mate.
Thanks again for a great live stream. Forgot to ask during the session - when you took the pictures of just the led lights, the ones you added in post, where did you set your focus point?
I have learned so much from Gavin. I have even purchased some of his lighting suggestions to my great joy. They work better than I imagined. One question for Gavin; what is the size of your studio?
Really enjoying this! Gavin, you have been one of my favourite inspirational photography gurus before you joined Adorama. I've learned a lot from you over the years. At the risk of sounding stupid, what was the homemade lighting modifier that you used? It looked almost like round cutlery strainers?
Weather? It's allegedly summer here. But in SE Australia it's like winter (which would be like your summer, I'd guess). ie. rainy, cloudy, temps around 15 degs C (about minus 200 in the old language if you're still measuring things in cubits...)..
An other super tutorial from Gavin and the team great fun and very informative, I love recreating what Gavin does and so far they have worked out well for me.and I will definitely be trying this one out. Wishing Gavin and the team all the best for Xmas and the new year and look forward to more off the same from them next year.
Tried this using my wife and the Xmas tree and it’s lights as the background. Canon R6, RF35 f1.8. Doesn’t come out as good. In AV, f1.8, ISO100 and around 1/2 a sec shutter speed was the better of the photos. I shall continue to watch the video.
I use to call it blur also or depth of field. Turns out the Japanese word for blur is 'boke'. Language has always fascinated me. Fun video. It is interesting to see a different approach to bokek, being that the effect is being treated as another subject in the picture. Sorry I missed it live.
How much i adore this guy, i think he is the best tutor and he's got a superb sense of humor. Gavin, you are simply flawless.
Couldn't agree more!
I truly have to agree - Amazing tutor!!!
I’ve been so inspired by Gavin and he makes learning off camera flash so easy. He is the sole reason for me to have ventured into off camera flash. I’m a motorsport shooter and never considered portraits, people and using off camera flash

Good question... I set the focus to manual and dialled it in to the closest possible focus.
I have learned so much from Gavin. I have even purchased some of his lighting suggestions to my great joy. They work better than I imagined. One question for Gavin; what is the size of your studio?
Hi Vic. My studio space is 15' by about 12' when we're filming or going live. 15'x17' when I'm just taking photos.
It’s a small home studios. He mentions the dimensions in many of his videos, i just can’t recall at the moment.
Love Gavin's tuts! Always good information with humor thrown in! Thank you Gavin, Merry Christmas to you and yours from Canada!
Really enjoying this! Gavin, you have been one of my favourite inspirational photography gurus before you joined Adorama. I've learned a lot from you over the years.

From the Philippines
@Adorama @GavinHoey I may have missed it, but what ISO settings did you use? I have my camera set to ISO100. Or should I set it to AUTO? Thanks.
Was this just published from viral photo tips for instagram influencers in 2018?
wow so good video tutorial Bokeh Portraits thanks youuu

I know your strainer is a kitchen product but I can’t find it, can you share what exactly it is?
I believe sensor size makes a differences. Could you set up a test to prove it does not?
Hi Gavin, I've been missing your videos! Merry Christmas for all of you!
At 38:05 - “spikes like street lights” are generally an artifact of intentional use of a small aperture. Gavin is wide open.
100% that’s how I get sun stars as well… more aperture blades more spikes.
King!!!

Gavin I thought you came to the USA. I use to watch you all the time when you were across the Pond.
Hi Rick. I came to NYC a few times pre-pandemic, hopefully I'll get back there again in 2023.
Southern Kentucky
always a fantastic vid :) :) :)
Any advice for finding TFP models?
Please show how to take portrait picture with Christmas lights.
I need more bohek tutorials inside studio with strobe flashes, when I shot portrait with flash studio they kill the ambient light of the bokeh
since nobody noticed it, i just want to state how lovely Chloe is
Dang it...did I miss it yet AGAIN?!
link led usb pls Gavin
What time are the live broadcasts?
I never realized that Gavin was a Time Lord! (Reference in the first one minute).
Gavin reminds me of Sylvester McCoy's Dr Who
A week late, but Dayton, OH USA
UGH!! I missed it live :( I hope my potato leek soup i was making during that time was worth it lol
It's freezing in Missouri.
Buzzing mic is usually unbalanced or being interfered with.
I wish I had a f1.2 lens
Sorry, not live, but I'm a day late and a dollar short, which means... I'm totally "On brand!"

🤩👍
If I may, Bokeh is not the blur itself but the quality of the blur. It is a common mistake.
