Film Noir Styled Portraits | LIVE with Gavin Hoey

- If you’re looking for a simple portrait concept that has layers of depth then the golden era of film noir is for you. On the surface it might appear to be just high contrast, black and white photography but add in a little bit of planning, appropriate styling, some careful lighting and film noir style images can be very dramatic.
In this live photo session, Gavin Hoey will take you through some simple photo ideas that are loosely styled on the classic film noir concepts of low key lighting and a lone, dark character. Using his small home studio as the location there’s also a high chance that smoke will be involved too!
Join us live to watch how the photo shoot unfolds and get your questions answered by Gavin during the session.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!
Imagine a world full of Gavin's, wouldn't that be a pleasure to live in. This man deserves so many respect because he likes to teach others to look at the good things or to get creative. Add then a lot of models like Sophie and Chloe and the world will be a much more beautiful place. Thank you Gavin and the team to light up the world with fun, strobes and reflectors.
Gavin is one of the best - I watch all his videos and very happy to see a new one 🙂
This was a most fun shoot! Sophie of course was FABULOUS! I could probably pull something like this off if I had a mode
Sophie is such an excellent model. Her body positioning and facial expressions are so good. She gives off the perfect mood that's appropriate for the setting. As someone who's photographed many people over the years, I really appreciate Sophie's talent. And with Gavin Hoey, who, in my opinion, is photography royalty and the absolute best on RUclips, this pairing is something really special!
Absolutely brilliant, everyone is having fun all while taking great photos and modelling like its nobody's business! Thank you, very educational AND entertaining
best photography instructor on youtube
GREAT!!! As alway with Gavin!
My cup of tea! Love noir and vintage...thanks for continuing to inspire me...Jan in NYC
Thanks Jan 👍
I've watched you create "room" scenes so many times in small spaces, and it's always impressive how well you make it work. Sophie is always impressive! (and I don't just mean "She's beautiful." I mean she always assumes poses that work, looking in the right direction, etc.. Excellent.) Take care!
Thanks Mike. Smoke and shadows are my secret weapons to small room scenes 👍
The most enthusiastic and enjoyable live photography session I've watched so far. Hats off to Mr. Gavin Hoey. Thank you very much, Adorama.
As a photographer and a producer of documentaries on film noir, I loved every minute of this. Thank you!
Well done. Loved it.
this is the fun of photography. thanks to you Gavin and the entire team. I think Sophie would be a fantastic model in recreating photos from the 1920s in America, the "flapper girls".
Your photo shooting style makes me excited! Thank you, Gavin!
Thanks for watching 👍
A tour de force!! Really interesting, very useful and lots of fun - many thanks to the whole team!!
Lets go Gavin! That was such an awesome one 👍🏼👍🏼
LOVE LOVE LOVE
Awesome video. It's great to see you with so much fun and joy in the creative work. Thanks a lot!
So enjoyable to watch and loads of ideas in my head now . Thank you
@49:15 I am just shocked and amazed at the same time what you get out of camera. I set up my set up EXACTLY same way as you - but - not even close.
Oh how I wish ALL my former teachers had been like you M. Hoey. Thanks for all the hard work and energy you put in ALL you work.
Some of those shots would look amazing with color showing in her eyes and on her lips. Enjoyed the show. Definitely hope you do more of these.
I can't tell you how enjoyable this was to watch, thank you!
Thanks Lisa, it was also enjoyable (and a little terrifying) to make 😁
U R the Master as always
loving the poker shots ,, well done Gavin , Sophie and rest of the team
Thanks Peter 👍
Great fun as always!
Always a pleasure to see your vids.
Top of the class really enjoyed this well done
Thanks Steve 👍
A very good video so thank you very much. Good to see / hear everyone also having a bit of fun throughout the shoot. Careful with the images though, police might investigate for an illegal gambling den. 🤣
Always love your practical “real world” approach. Thank you.
By far the best tutor .
One of the best ever sessions that I have seen on YT. So very educational, simply explained funny and easy going with the help of Sam and your beautiful model. And of course with super results.
Thanks Alex. Much as I love making videos, there's something altogether more energising about working live 😁
“No flash no Sophie” 😀 great stuff Mr Gavin.
Hi, great as always. I was wondering what the clip is holding your tethering cable to the camera, it looks like a great idea. Thanks!
Brilliant as always Gavin and the team. These live streams really are becoming your thing. It is really helpful and entertaining to see an 'unpolished' stream. Keep up the excellent work and bring on the next installment 👏
Trust me Alan, that was "polished" 😉
Brilliant!
Love the show
Great Stuff, Mr. Hoey
Love so much how you start minimal and then just keep building a scene to wring everything out of it possible! Once again, Sophie & Sam make you a great photographer! 😁Thanks for posting this video-it is super fun to watch.
Thanks for the kind words. I totally agree that Sophie and Sam make me a better photographer. This is always a team game 😉
Loves these live video presentations. So very informative and inspirational. I hope you will continue to do these each month.
Hi Bard. Thanks for the kind words and I also hope they'll continue... same time, same place next month 👍
So much fun. Love these live sessions and the results are great 👍
I'm going to have to give this a try. 3 different setups, and pix from each look great. Thanks for the inspiration, Gavin, Sophie, and Sam.
Thanks Jim 👍
Always so much fun!!!
Always great shooting ideas and Sophie does and great job as well. The card table shoot is one I’m going to try .
I was happy to see that pros do make mistakes as well : ) And, this was the first live photography thing I've ever watched and not skipped a second. You have a superb team there, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks for sticking with us. See you next time 👍
So much work went into this presentation, and you nailed it! You all seemed to have so much fun. Thankyou.
Thanks John. Daniel is the master of the umproptu demo. I wish I could be more like Daniel but I find a little bit of planning helps me stay on track 👍
I like both the darker and the lighter on the film noir. It was the gloves that did it for me! She needs some paste or crystal jewelry and a cocktail ring;)
Well done, Gavin and team!
This was wonderful! Both entertaining and educational. Love Gavin's energy!
Love this shoot.
Love it Gavin great work. Love how you use whatever works.
Thanks. Finding random stuff that works (like the cutlery strainer) is what makes it fun 👍
Thank you once more foe another inspiring video, Gavin. Sophie was looking great, as always.
You are so much fun to watch and learn from. Thank you Gavin and team!
Thanks Dr Steve 👍
Fanatic work guys. Looked like you had so much fun 👍👍👍
Thanks Paul and yes it was great fun 👍
Great work Gavin! Takes a lot of guts to do a shoot live on RUclips! This was a success as usual!
Thanks Vincent. Live on RUclips is even more scary then live on stage. Gotta out push your comfort zone I guess!
i love this photo session, fantastic
This is so awesome. I love this style.. great job!
Gutted I missed this live, really do enjoy your film noir styled shoots, great work to all and as ever love your energy Gav 🤪
Thanks Matt 👍
How do you get into 'LIVE SHOWS' anyways?
Wow! "💯Greatest Show On Earth!"
Really enjoyable session, well done.
Thanks Ken 👍
I am planning on doing some myself now
When Sofie gets to the table one of the first thoughts that came to mind was Damian Lovegrove lighting, as he uses thee evolve 200
Honestly, I never see you create that kind of lighting technique in your Noir: I haven't seen all your tutorials, but I've seen a lot of them
when Sofie gets to the table that lighting felt somewhat Boudoir, then the cinematic feel changed to an even puncher lighting technique
a even more Lovegrove style as the deck of cards began to fly or be flipped: that is very versatile and skillful in my opinion
that's how I see it - two thumbs up
Excellent, thank you. Love the images - very paperback book cover of a private detective series.
“Girl with the deadman’s hand”
“Lady with all the aces”
excellent !!
Great show, very inspirational!
Excellent presentation, together with a lot of fun. Just a small element: Sam's voice volume was a little too low to completely catch her saying. Anyway, congratulations and many, many thanks. I learned a lot.
Paul
What a team! Lots of good points and laughs even when its recorded..... Freudian slip, "that's a large whiskey". How did she know! Ha ha. (Nr Bournemouth).
Love your videos Gavin! Watching from Nashville,TN-USA.
Thanks Dale 👍
Absolutely awesome content.
Really great live thanks
Fantastic demo! Thank you Gavin and team.
Thanks Paul 👍
it is a real skill to create the style of Noir as you gain more and more experience. the lighting really is the pro lighting,
but the hair style and clothing is so important I feel - I said to myself as Sofie stood next to the curtain with the cigar
i would love to have that style Sofie created at the ford Museum in front of this historic cars
something after all the tutorials i watched of her and she never speaks i got a feel of her personality
she is very skilled I feel her noir felt like a 1940's and 1950's noir
34:16 definitely prefer the dark background version, anyway I see some of out of focus images through your videos. Could it be the AF system of that camera? 34:25 not bad. I'd prefer something more like 31:24 but with very little detail that breaks the total black area. There must be more darkness on the left behind her than on the right, this kind of image requires a fade into black.
49:22 in this case I see no reason for lowering the light so much. I expect a more contrasty scene as if she were in a dramatic conversation about a security plan or something noir like that, with a stronger light from the top. Beautiful the images from now on with the other elements on the table, the smoke, the cards and the opponent at the end.
cool, thank you very much, BIG fan of you!!
i Love this episode
Fantastic!
great job!!!

Dear Gavin, I have a question: you used the beauty dust to simulate a luminaire and used the small strip box to really light up. Shouldn't the model's face be dark? because the light is too low. Unless there is another source of higher light in the matter.
It was very interesting. Thanks!
i would love to learn from this guy, so amazing
Thanks Jay. Keep watching, keep learning. Join me live next month and maybe get your question(s) answered during the session 👍
Can't wait for the Flashpoint LightStrainer !
I love the name! The Lightstrainer! I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Flashpoint or Westcott or Profoto came a knocking 😂
gavin how would you achieve a stage spotlight sort of effect if across the backdrop
It is a high by pass, multi faceted light modifier.
Thanks a lot for inspiration and education.
hi from New Zealand
Sophie is so beautiful!
is it possible to do this Shooting with 2 Players. To see the players profile ?
I get what you do and you do it good , but i dont get the Camera choice , Olympus ? I know for video Panasonic and others have their thing , but in photography im Nikon/Canon guy , i use Canon . Wondering why do you shoot Olympus ?
hail gavin! king of M43!
That style camera ( the older one Prop) could also be a Kodak. I have one sitting in my Livingroom.
Excellent shoot!
But what lighting did we use just, wanna try it out
Can the soft box do same lighting as this?
Just a bare flash would be closer in look but a softbox will be a more flattering look.
Where can I get the lower c-stand on the right side?
Awesome as always. Although, I don't get how you can light an incense stick and not set off your fire/smoke alarms. I can't do that anywhere indoors here in California. Amazing pictures you made here.
Thanks Tex. The secret is... Disposable shower caps. I have some bright yellow ones which I place over the studio smoke alarms before I start using smoke and remove them as soon as I'm done.😉
@@GavinHoey That's a great solution. I may do that when I cook now. I set the alarm off half the time.... Thanks.
Great job thank you! What is Sophie portfolio page
Hi Gavin,
Not sure if you'll see this comment days after the stream, but you can get Chauvet DJ fluid from a company called StageDepot which is based in Bristol but they do nationwide delivery
Good to know, thanks Stuart 👍
What lense are you using
the money session screams for an remake with OM1 and ProCapture..😉

It took me almost a week to watch this video.... I had to do my normal chores. Now I know how to use the A,B,C,D settings on my strobes now. And I have learned from you on how to use backlights to light a certain areas, using snoot adapter, and a strobe light with just a reflector. I am glad that a professional photographer like you is using a hand-held incident flash meter. A viewer from a mentorship member section of Facebook questioned me of why I would be using a hand-held light meter on this day and age. It seemed too old fashioned to him, I guess. I have a smoke machine that I got for free. I will try to use that in my photos for certain moods....like the room is on fire, because the model is too hot....like your model! I like the way you teach, and your mood is so attention-getting.
You're right about doing self portraits. Your model is always available and on time - :-) - and you can learn a lot without wasting shoot time. If they don't turn out, delete them! Film Noir is usually thought of as 1940s, not '50s, though it'd work OK then too. The "Casablanca" look. And, I really like black and white. * Darker background. The brighter background is distracting and draws attention away from the subject. * "Ungood"? I don't think that's a word, but it works, I guess.
