Grids And Why They’re A Studio Essential… LIVE with Gavin Hoey

- Grids should be an essential tool in every studio, especially if your space is on the smaller side. Sometimes called egg crates, grids on softboxes give the light more direction, reducing unwanted light spills and lowering the risk of lens flare. But there’s more to grids than that.
In this live-streamed photo session, Gavin Hoey tries out grids not just on softboxes but also on reflectors. He’ll explore how grid angles affect the light spread and share some creative lighting tips to make grids more than just a way to channel light. Of course, like any light modifier, grids can also cause unexpected issues, so Gavin will cover those as well.
As always, Gavin will squeeze as many real-world hints, tips, and lighting tricks into an hour as he can. Join the conversation, get your questions answered live, and help steer the session… or just watch along and enjoy.

OMG Gavin! Good you found your lost wall at the end!!! I'm sure it was a hidden wall that wasn't there at the beginnings. 😂
Thank you Gavin, u helped me a lot 😊
Glad I've been of help 👍

Morning all from Brisbane Australia
Greetings from Helsinki!
Hello Gavin
I have followed you by subscription at RUclips for many years, but never reach the live show, only the recordings. What can be done so I can take part of the live show in the future? I normally get information regarding the show 5-6 hours after you have finished. Kind regards
Check the "Live" tab on Adorama's RUclips channel. The live sessions are usually listed a week ahead. See one you like? Click the notifications button 👍
@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin.
In keeping with the theme, Chloe is wearing a full body grid today.

I missed something. Peace 😎
I wonder if there s a difference in output between using the bare bulb vs the speedlight head. I have the feeling I loose light when I use the barebulb (in same softbox) but have no explanation for that and since I see you use the barebulb I asume I m wrong
The bare bulb is less efficient at pushing light forward than the speedlight head. But in a Softbox you actually want an omnidirectional light like that to even out the exposure across the Softbox surface.
@@GavinHoey thank you
Hey that means if I tell people that I'm nearly 50 they'd less likely guess that I'm really 54 😁
Technically you're correct, you (and me) really are almost 50 🤣
