The MV on the vintage modern is post phase inverter so not only does it lower the volume but it also significantly impacts the negative feedback which is why the presence didn't do anything. Turn up the MV and the presence will work and circuit will behave more like a early plaxi. Those KT66 tubes will be magic too.
They all sounded great and having an original Jubilee 2555 have to day it's an amazing versatile amp that sounds great straight in and takes pedals well that also features a great effects loop!
The Vintage Modern is Marshall's masterpiece. I can't think of a better amp for a Strat. There is a reason why Malmsteem (Strat) and Slash (Les Paul) loved this amp. You need to set it up using the Body and Detail controls in conjunction with the guitar's volume and tone knobs. The EQ is largely for decoration but you can use them to fine tune your sound.

I own all 3...the best amp out of these with out a doubt in my opinion is the Vintage Modern hands down, its a find it and keep it set type amp( not meant for switching between modes live) i can get the 800 out of it and defenatly get the silver. I spouse it can take a bit to get use to the detail and body circuit as it has a wide range between the 2 in 1 amp that it is
The Vintage Modern can sound a lot different, you can get into Silver Jub territory (at least with the 2466 100(80?) watter. It is the finest Marshall released after the JCM800 series was discontinued, in my book. They sound spectacular and are so versatile. A true Marshall fan would buy all three of these models, of course.
If only they would reissue the vintage modern in a 20 watt/studio package then I would be all over it . I have the Mini Jubilee but don't have the mini 800 as I am not really an 800 guyy . I was going to buy one anyway because why not but found it was much to loud when I got it up to overdrive levels. The Mini Jube is alot more Manageable at lower volumes tone wise . Even on 5 watt mode the mini 800 was still crazy loud

Then you can use it at home just as in the studio. I never understood the Studio series, it's a Marshall cash and crab. 50 watts is where it is at if you play with a band.

The Vintage Modern is gorgeous, period!! The 4-input non-master volume JCM 800, is a forgotten thing. I have an old Marshall catalog, from when the Silver Jubilee first came out in the late 80s, and even there you have to look carefully to realize it’s not the same as the standard Master volume JCM 800. I’ve always wondered where these amps ended up in the wild. How do they compare to plexi Super-leads, and JMPs?
You guys aren't gonna get those amps to give up the goods without pushing them. A quality attenuator is a vital part of the signal chain when running the big iron. Also imo, the plexi circuit is where it's at.

I know this is abit of a weird/ random question, but when blending speakers where there is some loudness difference between the two, lets just say a V30 and a g12m Greenback, is it the DB rating, or the wattage or both that is mainly accounting for the loudness difference between the two? if I took a 150w speaker and blended it with a 30w speaker, but they both had 100db ratings, how would the difference in loudness between the speakers compare to say 100w speaker with a 97db rating blended with a 15w speaker with 100db rating? I hope that question sort of makes sense lol. Also when blending speakers that have a loudness difference in a 4x12, would you reccomend an X pattern, or Two on top/Two on bottom?(let's just say in a straight cab).
Hi James, they are great questions. It is the sensitivity rating on the speaker that accounts for its effective loudness. You can blend speakers with different power ratings just fine but have to work off the "weakest" speaker.... so a 30+150 would give you a 60 watt cab (to be safe). Then when mixing speakers with different ratings in a 4x12 I do definitely prefer an X pattern. Some people will argue against this but that is what I do. You can put two quieter speakers on the top if you like, I would do that in a vertical 2x12 but do prefer an X pattern in a 4x12.... Also mixing different sensitivities in a 2x12 isn't such a big deal. Some people get sniffy about it but if the blend in tones works then I say go for it.... Music isn't a science, but I think a lot of contributors to the internet would have you believe it is ;)... I hope this helps.
The VM needs the gain stage tweaked to more like the Silver Jubilee in my opinion. The VM is like two amps in one and not bad but just needs more gain period to make it fun to play. Easily modded to get better gain and worth it to Modernize
I owned a Vintage Modern for two years. It's a cool amp with a lot of downsides. Low E always sounded farty, and the high dynamic range had more of a fizzy overdrive.
That is right, JMC800 is a big word... as far as I have always gathered they are extremely similar to the late JMP equivalents... I love both of those amps.
Use a micro amp then a boss ce1 preamp on the clean and you have the John Frusciante clean sound. And it’s brilliant !! Marshall silver jubilee all the way. Drive channel with Les Paul and micro amp hitting front end is pure slash
Some cool sounds. Never heard of a 4 input JCM 800 before. Particularly liked the Silver J with the Strat, but that PRS Mira is a good sounding guitar too.
Yeah the strat with the SJ is great, that strat does sound particularly cool. The four input JCM800 is a funny one, as it was my first proper amp I always thought they were common but Joe had never heard of them either.... I love them but you need a power soak. Thanks for watching Patrick.

That Ibanez guitar sounded like crap, he couldn't make it sound good and that guy is quite a player yet he was unimpressive with that guitar on that VM...All a jumper does on a JCM 800 is ruin the entire tonal.experience...Best tone was the PRS through the Silver Jubilee...Throw that Ibanez away and shoot the breeze a little less or get more interesting with it...Peace Boys...

We probably have well over a dozen Marshall here, and Joe hadn't heard of that amp. I think you've taken this a little out of context, unless you only think there is one model of JCM800.

The Silver Jubilee I find is a bit harder to work than a master volume JCM800 or JMP but they are a great sounding amp.

Just a tip for 800 users.... if you run a volume pedal in the loop, it can greatly help manage the volume
Most 800’s do not have an effects loop
Not the good early ones anyway

Same amps as always, the 4 holer non master volume, just in a jcm800 head cabinet. They are just as good as the early plexis

Vintage Modern sounded great plus ease of use. The JCM 1959 next for pure tone. The jubilee was bland in comparison.

there are lots of different JCM800s, the 1959 model wasn't that popular as it has no master volume, so not many got made.
yes, this is a 4-hole non-master volume model. Basically and JMP/Plexi type head with JCM800 aesthetic.
