Thanks for your work, mate ;)
To my ears, that Plexi sounded the absolute business on every setting.
I agree. I've been going between the silver jubilee and and the plexi. But I'm seriously thinking about the plexi combo
i owned the 50W 800 (no "fx loop"), I was unsatisfied when chasing Hendrix and SRV quasi-clean tone. I don't know if I tried the Low input, and I failed to swap tube 1 to a lower-gain tube. If I had it today, I'd also want to put an "fx loop" in it instead of selling it.
It's got the mojo
Totally agree with you. All 3 are great but plexi is godly.
Plexi for me. It may not be the most practical amp for home use but you just can't beat that transparent tone.
i love the plexi clean tone, and i love my BD-2 anyway which is somewhat based on the plexi distortion
They all sound wonderful! But I'm with you Henning, the Plexi sounded the nicest! GOOD demo!
Best demo I’ve seen on these amps. The early demos hitting yt weren’t great, including the official Marshall demos. These sound great. Now I want all 3.
I love demos like this, each amp same riff back to back to back...perfect comparison. With that said, all of them sounded good but the 800 sounded best. I always thought I’d want a plexi, but I really liked the 800.
The mini JCM 800 would be my choice. The mini Jubilee is arguably more flexible and versatile but the distorted sound is more fizzy and the clean sound a bit thin. The mini Plexi may be the best sounding of the three if you can crank it, but for my purposes, especially if I buy a smaller amp like this, a master volume is a must.
Yeah sound beats features and versatility any day. That JCM 800 has balls!
Attenuate. They are pricy. BUt yeah
In fact after trying all three of them, mini Jubilee is the best sounding amp.
I agree that the Jubilee is fizzy...probably due to clipping diodes...hence, I don't really care for it. The Plexi is by far the most organic-sounding. The JCM800 is really good, but I think the Plexi edges it out. All 3 are pretty cool though!
I bought the mini plexi the other day after hearing this demo. it is beyond awesome! thank you.
I've spent the last two weeks looking at 20 watt Marshall's and this video really helped, i now know i want the plexi. I was 80 percent sure but now i'm 100 percent sure!!!!
WELL DONE!!
The best Studio Series comparison video on the internet right now... the same riffs/chords through the 3 different amps (you'd be surprised how many players don't do that).
My preference?
16:10 - Right there, perfect Judas Priest through the plexi
I got the plexi and absolutely love it!
How is it on low power mode?
@@WorldsOkayestGuitarPlayer It's still loud as shit and if you want that "plexi" tone it's going to need to be quite cranked. Sure you can play it quietly but you'll find yourself wondering why and just reverting back to a quieter amp
@@alexmurphy5289 thanks for that 👍👍
The riff at max gain with TS boost was absolutely sick!!! I have to give the nod to the Plexi. Was very Eric Johnson tones on the single notes. Fantastic little amps and great playing. I see the plexi in my future.
Came here to choose one and got out more confused because they're all really awesome!
I dont have the cash to buy one but I think I'm gonna buy them all
lol
Your ears will lead you to the one you like most
I own the Jubilee and I think it's amazing. It has a very dynamic eq section. And the two channels make it more versatile than the other two I think.
I just love the concept of these low wattage classics. If you want a straight forward rock amp these are great.
Hi.Enough loud is at clean settings(Jubilee) at small club gig?Near a loud drummer?Or at rehearshall room with loud drummer? In band situation? Thanks.
@@kovroberto I gig with mine set clean or just breaking up for small gigs. I use mine with the master all the way up and the input gain around 6. Easily loud enough, especially if mic'd up
@@kovroberto It's definately loud enough for small Gigs and rehearsal (and you can always mic the AMP if needed)
I play it on low wattage setting at rehearsal. It works fine.
One word though, it's mostly not a super clean amp. You can get it pretty clean when you turn it down but even on clean channel it usually has a little bit of breakup when master is up (at least with humbuckers, i find). Which i like.
It actually sounds very good if you are not after the vintage plexi tone, but it's so versatile that it seems to be the best choice
I'm torn between the plexi and the 800. Volume control is critical given ear conditions, but that plexi tone and chime is what I love. I hear a bit of it in the 800 and the 80s thing, which I like, but the purity of the plexi really draws me in. I'm open to recommendations on a solution, thanks, as always great vids!!!
I've got the 100 watt JCM 800. I've had it for years and I love it! Venues have changed, so I love the fact that Marshall has come out with these three smaller versions of their classics. Thanks, JM.
Question is how close does the 20w JCM800 sound compared to your 100w tone wise?
Marshall’s do an ultimate lead tone, no doubt about it. Stunning. I can’t keep my fingers out of my eyes either HP. Ugh! Get well soon!
I think the Plexi had the best tone. All very similar, but the sound stood out more to my ears.
I have the Jubilee. Use it clean or dirty but don’t expect to channel switch. You can’t equalise the volume. I think the plexi with a tube screamer would be better.
My heart wants Plexi, my brain the Jubillee for the dual channel practicality and my wallet wants neither.
Stay away from the Plexi unless you have an attenuator. If its as loud as the 800 when you turn it up, even on 5W mode, its a LOUD BASTARD. I've got an Aracom Pro2-DAG and without it, There is no way to get a good amount of gain out of the plexi at bedroom levels without an attenuator.
my feelings exactly
They’re $1499 now in the US 🤦♂️
@@schmoey45 If you buy em off andertons I think you can get them shipped to your door at around $1300 after conversion
The EQ section on the Jubilee gives you the most flexibility, it's much better than the other two, plus you get the clean channel.
That plexi sounds so sick! I would love one of those along with one of those new mini soldanos that recently came out. Those two will give me every tone I've ever loved!
I have the Jubilee, I think it’s a great amp though I’d still be tempted to add the other 2 to my collection
I’ve had the mini Jubilee with the matching 2x12 vertical cab for over a year now. Love it. Tried it through my recto 2x12 as well and it does sound quite different. Plenty loud enough for small to mid size gigs. The fixed bias on the Jubilee is nice for a no fussing around. Swapped out the stock tubes with EH el34s and the 12ax7s. Made a big difference too. Great amp!
How did the sound change with those tubes?
First THAT is how you do a comparison video. Going through the gain ranges, using both lead and some rythm playing, harmonics etc. Perfect. Personally, across the board, My preference in order 1. JCM800 or Plexi, real close, 3. Silver Jube.
Kinda surprised, but I like the Plexi the best. Great review and comparison, thanks for this!
Excellent comparison sir! The previous (longer) video you did on the mini JCM 800 was a key factor in my decision to buy the SC20H, which I REALLY like. From this video I still think the mini JCM is the best for med to high gain rock, while the Plexi really excels in the low-med gain. I have put the Plexi on the top of my wish list! The prices here in Canada are pretty high ($1,500 plus tax, lots of tax) which curbs frequent buying. It's been a while since I've been excited about new amplifiers but the Marshall Studio series is amazing!
This video is so good. I've got a big collection of vintage Fenders and some Vox in my studio and need something for when bands who need a little more gain come in, bit hopefully something that doesn't feel wildly out of place amongst the vintage gear here. So I've been trying to educate myself on Marshall stuff, and know I don't need much volume, but most of what I find is people recommending 2204s because they're 50 watts, so at least less crazy than 100. I see older Marshalls that are way out of my price range but still don't know confidently which is the right choice. This video sold me on the plexi, not to mention I hadn't found that Marshall was already making a current, low wattage version like this, so it'll probably be my pick. The 800 was great for the extra high gain sounds but after hearing the SV here I feel like I understand what people are into about vintage Marshalls. Thank you!
replace the word studio with living room and I could have written this. I love my vintage amps but I am missing that plexi sound. not for long.
It's amazing to see the variety of tones that can be produced by an HSS Strat, they are definitely underrated.
Gonna get the plexi, it sounds the best on all comparisons. Gonna pair it with Fryette Power Station 100 so volume is NO ISSUE. Can find the sweetest sound on the amp and play that on ANY VOLUME from bedroom whisper to even louder than the amp would be capable on its own. And can even footswitch between two different volume settings. This will be my new rig... When a few paychecks arrive 😂
Surprisingly, I liked the Jubilee the best. Had the most clarity and flexibility. Pair it with a TS and it covers all Rock bases.
I throught the same, but everyone hears a little different but through my tablet lol the jubilee sounds nice
I was on the same boat until I played them all back to back, plexi won.
Great comparison video, really brings out the character of each amps. The Plexi is by far my favorite, only wished it had a master volume, my neighbours will hate me.
Exactly! I might ask my neighbours to buy me an attenuator if they complain!!I wonder how the 5 watt setting sounds?
You can use a attunatner
Attenuator is necessary to get a hi-gain (20W+) any tube amp in a bedroom. . Nothing wrong with that. I recently bought a SPL Reducer. I am extremely happy with it.
Same here, great attenuator choice, one of my best buys
From the perspective of a metal guy, the JCM800 20 has a bit more gain than the full size 2203, which is great, but that mini silver jubilee is absolutely killer and probably the better choice
The best review by far. Notwithstanding some other offerings that were really well made... you addressed so many practical things that one would want to know.
That Plexi sound is perfect. Such a shame Marshall never managed to make a MV amp that kept that tone.
Because it needs to be loud, simple as that. The power tubes must be smoking and the speaker working hard.
The non-MV is the tone! You can always use attenuators.
thats like saying it's a shame that Ferrari never made a fast, low horsepower car.
A huge part of the Plexi gain sound is from the power section driving. And not just the big power tubes, but also the phase inverter. The preamp itself isn’t really all that high gain at all.
They did. Its called the vintage modern. 2266 or 2466.
Hi from Canada! After watching this thorough comparison with honest professional opinion at the end, I've subscribed and liked your channel. Keep up!
Thanks for reviewing this series of Marshall amp heads, I sold my JCM 800 Lead Series 50 watt 2205 a few years back along with 4x12 1960 cab, a total workhorse rig for my younger days of the live band club days, very dependable rig, very loud, and nice tonal combinations with foot-switchable channels and effects loop, but felt like it needed a younger dude to keep it on the road so I sold the rig. I had purchased an MG100DFX Combo a few years beforehand so I was basically using that set up for smaller live gigs, it comes close to the tones but not exact, so your review is helpful and I always like the Plexi tone as well, the Plexi might be a winner for the home studio! Maybe a word of advice to younger players that these amps take time to really understand the range of tones and how to best use within what you are looking to accomplish, this point was brought up in the video, so consider it before purchasing and allow time and experimentation once in your hands! Ciao, ALDO
As an 80s lover the JCM is the clear choice. It’s on EVERYTHING. Did you use prerecorded clean trax into the amps for consistent playing input?
I would be VERY HAPPY with any one of three!
when the both inputs were pushed on the plexi it was golden... without the top end fizz and full sounding, the right OD on this would give you all the push to play pretty much anything.
Surprised I didn't like the Jubilee but loved the Plexi's clarity.
One of Dyson's air purifiers helped me with the seasonal allergy a lot. Just meine 5 cents

An Orange sounds like an orange!
Marshall sounds like a Marshall!
The snozzberries taste like snozzberries 🤗!
Had these all been 100 Watt versions that would have been a real vermicious knid for the SPL meter
I have two of the Plexi's.....by far the best of the bunch imho after trying them all.
Which of these would be the best pedal platform? I'm looking for an amp that can get loud yet remain clean, takes pedals well and has a great FX loop. Which would be the best choice for these needs?
Great video/demo, thanks!
I bought eventually the Studio VIntage mini-Plexi due to this review. It is an amazing amplifier, super warm and smooth and round. I am using it with a JHS Andy Timmons pedal and it sounds amazing. Cheers and thanks for the always wonderful reviews you make ! :)
The Jubilee is a different beast. If you take the time to experiment with the eq you will be rewarded greatly.
Exactly. I’ve got an 87’ 2555 and it’s so versatile being great straight in and takes pedals well!
@@stevestarr6395 same, wouldn't trade it for anything (*actually mines the 2553)
On the Jubilee, for max gain I would suggest setting the Output Master between 4 and 7, using input gain for the amount of gain you want and the Lead Master for volume.
It gets very bass heavy with the Output Master above 7. The sweet spot is just below that.
A just right comparison. If I could only have one Marshall it would be the Plexi. I have an older1987x which I bought used some years back for $1400 - now look at them $2500! Makes the 20 watt Studio a no brainer. It has the same tubes and effects loop as 1987x, only lighter/smaller and almost half the cost.
I realize that this video was done several years ago but… I have the SV20 Mini Plexi with the Origin 212 vertical cab. I also purchased the JHS Black Box which puts a volume control in the effects loop. This gives me a master vol type of control where I can gain up the preamp. I know that does nothing to push those sweet EL34s into overdrive as well and I know that’s a big part of the sound so a good attenuator would be a better choice. Also the Celestion 70-80 speakers in my Origin cab are average at best. Not many peoples favorite. I plan to replace those with a pair of Greenback 25s or a set of Randall/Eminence Squarebacks that I have in another cab. I really like this amp for that 60s/70s rock sound and different overdrives will push it into that sweet spot! However a TC Electronics Arena reverb pedal didn’t seem to work very well in the effects loop. So all in all it’s a very good amp! I haven’t tried the direct out but in every demo that I’ve heard on RUclips, it sounds horribly artificial! I’ll just mix it up with. 57 or 609 and have better tone!
HP, your playing is amazing and you have really done a great job on showing the differences in these three amps! I saw your thumbnails about your guitars that you used but I didn’t catch your speaker/attenuator/IR setup. Someone mentioned how well you nailed an Eric Johnson tone and I totally agree! You’re a good person sharing these things with us and I hope that you are prospering in all you’re doing! I know this was a long time ago but I also hope the years have helped you find relief for your allergies! God Bless Man!
I still can’t decide if I should upgrade to one of these from the origin 50 head. I really like it, but I would like to own a proper made in UK Marshall. Great demo.
I have the jcm800 studio ....with an attenuator...that's the key....love it
Which attenuator do you use? I love my jcm800 studio. It’s super easy to dial in but I bet it sounds a hell of a lot better being able to crank it
Hell yea. I got the plexi and run it to 11....
Kind of took the Edward path and got a variable transformer.
Run the amp on full at 60 volts.
Hell my cat can sleep in front of it and still screams
George Mueh use a standard variable transformer from Lowe’s or Home Depot?
@@mr.bubbalo9720 Just get a Two Notes Captor..its what. I use with my EVH EL34 50W
Sir a great comparison and made me decide on going for plexi it is the best sounding.
Hey Henning you should definitely made a review about the amazing Marshall DSL1HR that costs almost nothing and is simply amazing (for its price)
I own the Mini-Jubilee and it’s freaking amazing. You can definitely get nice clean tones out of it with just a little tweaking of knobs. I may eventually go for the Plexi but at that point I’d be doing it for collection purposes rather than actual usability and I’m not gonna spend my money on things I don’t need but it does sound awesome… I’ve played them all in person.
Use the plexi like Dan Hawkins from the darkness. Effectively making it a 3 Channel head
At home I run my 100w JCM800 flat out through a Rivera rock crusher. An attenuator is the way to get the big amp cranking in small places.
Hy Henning, I'm an old subscriber. I've been watching your channel for a long time. Watching your interview with Andy the guitar geek, I decided to write you this comment saying that you inspired me to get into the arranging, more than into gear or technique. I love your channel, I bought multiple pedals from your reviews, I love this review as the others. But sometimes I would like to hear you "riffing like an Australian". Keep safe, keep being awesome and being yourself. Thank you for everything
thank you so much for telling me!
@@EytschPi42 thank you for being you ❤️
That plexi gunned with TS, thats the sound, why I play guitar in first place
Awesome raw comparison of these great mini amps, great job Sir! I didn’t know your channel so I subscribed. Thank you! Cheers
I liked the plexi the most out of the test. Have you ever compared the plexi tone to the Origin20 (back to the origins of Marshall)? The price difference in the US is $600. I just wonder how "sonically" close the two actually are.
I've got the JCM800 Studio and it sounds AMAZING! What's cool about it is that besides the more headroom and subtle tonal differences that come with higher wattage amps, it's tonally identical to its bigger brother.
Mesa Boogie make mini versions of their Dual Rectifier and Mark V, but they use EL84 tubes as opposed to 6L6's like the big ones. The mini ones sound great to my ears, but it does bug me a bit thinking that I'm missing out on the 6L6 tones that people bang on about. There's none of that with the Marshall's as both the 20 and 100 watt versions use EL34's.
Marshall, pay Henning for Origin series review!
decidedly for crunch my first choice would be Jcm 800, what an incredible sound
Great review ! I've owned the mini Plexi for just over a year (got it in late April 2019), used it on dozens of gigs (recorded a bit with it too) and it's my favorite amp to date. Lead tone with a boost and a bit of delay is instant George Lynch on Back For The Attack/Wicked Sensation...one of the best rock lead tones ever in my book. Monster amp, especially at the price (IF you're in Europe).
I'm actually considering adding the 2525H to the stable(once gigging resumes) for additional flexibility, and for going stereo, which I do on bigger stages. I definitely loved the 2555x I tested but couldn't justify the 1300€ asked while I also have a DSL100, but for 750€ ? Hell yeah. Especially when these are feather-light, which is very nice for load-in/load-out.
Marshall made a killing with these amps, at the price point (again, IF you're in Europe) I can't see anything that's even close to THAT. Especially if that's the kind of tones you're looking at.
Within 4 minutes of this video I got the info I was looking for and hadn't found in several other videos, lol. Thanks, man
This is the video I've been searching for!! The real must-buy here is that t-shirt.
Really wanted to like the Jubilee here
But the Plexi has IT
The Jubilee would probably stand out well in a mix though.
I have extensive experience with all these models (in 50/100W). In regards to being heard through the mix, I find the Jubilee to be the hardest to cut through. The Jubilee is just a darker amp than the other 2. Speaker choice is going to be crucial in how it sits in the mix.
With the Plexi and JCMs Greenbacks are pretty much the go-to speaker oh choice while the Jubilee works better with the Vintage 30. I wouldn't like the V-30 in a Plexi, and in the JCM 800 it's just downright painfully harsh, while the Greenback in the Jubilee just doesn't have enough presence to be heard over the rest of the band (although if you're playing at home or recording the Greenback could work just fine).
I own Jubilee, I tried all three but the Jube was my choice.
Is it as bright as it is in the video I’m trying to decide between the Jube and the jcm800 for the mid gain setting that he had dialed on the jcm800 the mid gain setting he used on the jubilee the gain knot was a lot higher than it was on the jcm800
Picked up a Vintage today for $1K AUD, pre-loved, mint, I am chuffed..A ton of amp for the money. I've had a Jubilee Mini combo for a few years, and the clean is nice, but the dirt channel isn't great IMHO.
Plexi for me
Here it is, just over two years later. I still have the Studio Vintage Plexi head, a 1x12 cab and a 2x12 matching cab. I just checked the price at Sweetwater (nobody here in the Bay Area has any of these in stock) and the head was $1750. The 2x12 cab was $1300. OUCH! I’m not selling this amp… but, Henny, how are prices over on your side of the pond?
NOT that high
Thanks for making this video and comparing these three 20 watt platforms. My take away... the jubilee is not to my liking and performed last in all formats ( a bit too fizzy). The JCM800 (sc) really excelled in higher gain - the focus and detail really jumped out to me in that last take. The plexi (studio vintage) really surprised me in that it handled everything very well... I was surprised it handled higher gain as well as it did... certainly a little looser sounding with a slight lack of focus. I am between the plexi and 800... thinking of ordering both and keeping the winner but... I fear that may not be easily determined.
The answer: DSL20 running it into v30s or v-types. You are welcome.
Nah running into g12 - t75's
I went and bought the Jubilee along with the matching 2x12 silver cab 4 years ago and although I love it, I would gladly trade it for the plexi equivalent.
Killer review/demo! Should be posted on the Marshall website even! Not a bad sound out of any of them,. but to me, the Plexi and 800 sound like Marshalls, and the Jubilee sounds - like a Jubilee. Different flavors. That said, for $1300, you can get a used 100 watt Jubilee, or an actual 2203/2204 from the late 80's, with real iron and punch. If these 20 watters were $850 new in the US - then that would make it a way easier choice! PS - Flonaise cured my bad seasonal allergies!
@@greedypoet Its funny, people are buying the mini's and still using an attenuator. May as well buy the big Originals.
For hard rock I'll take the JCM 800....but for everything else, I'll take the Plexi.
For me this was one of your best review videos. I already have the sc20 jcm .
For cleans I use a fender princeton.
nice job with the side by side comparison. I think I am going to pick up the mini plexi today. thanks.
The model that is "jumpered" really kicks, my fav of the 3...thx!!
Klon type pedal into an 800 with the drive on the Klone ramped waaaaay up for modern tight/detuned metal tones. The mids hump as you increase the drive on the klon but it's tighter and and more defined than a screamer. A soul fool works well for this.
It was actually Lee Malia of Bring Me The Horizon that I spotted doing this , despite not being a massive fan, they've got something heavy as hell going on.
Should have included the Origin 20H for the budget minded.
I tried a cranked origin 50 head through a 4 by 12 and that amp does a killer plexi imitation. Gave up the paul kossoff goods with a Gibson custom shop les paul . The custombuckers pair very well with a classic style marshall
Hi! Great video as always!!! About the SC20H, you could use, for a live, an A/B channel switch! 😉 ...or not???
For rhythm Silver Jubilee. For lead JCM 800, and for overall chimeyness Plexi.
Very nicely done. Answered the question whether to go for the Plexi or 800. Very informative and excellent playing.
JCM800 pips it for me 😀 Great shootout.
Just grabbed a used sc20h at guitar center for 879.99. It’s does what i like and i’m very happy with it. for the full $1400 i would have got a Friedman, no question.
Great demo - I love them all but feel like I basically need the plexi and the jube. I think the plexi can kind of cover the 800, while the 800 doesn't do the plexi tones as well, and the jube is its own late 80s thing. None of these really do it all I guess.
Thanks for the shootout. They all sounded great.
For quality of tone it's the vintage all the way for me. Much more organic sounding by far.
New to your channel but I love your playing style. Some of the soloing reminds me of Eric Johnson
I bought the SV20, and while it’s a little overpriced, it does sound really nice through my greenback loaded 4x12. It loves being cranked and jumped with the channels blended while getting smacked with a boost on the front end. However, at around 2-3 on the volume it has some beautiful glassy cleans, especially when hit with a booster like the Seymour Duncan. None of this is bedroom friendly, without an attenuator of some sort. This thing is unholy loud.😆
The Jubilee always sounds harsh to me. I think the plexi wins this demo hands down. You can always get more gain, just slap a distortion pedal in front of it.
Yeah, the Plexi works for me. If I could find an amp that sounds like that at that power with a master volume I'd be set. Maybe one of the Friedman amps can do that? The Jubilee just has that Slash tone all over it.

The plexi has the Marshall tone that I think define most classic rock the other two are more versatile obviously but if you throw a boost in front of the plexi some reverb and a little slapback I think it sounds much more transparent and not as 80s. Plus it looks a hell of a lot cooler
Just bought the jubelee combo on thomann cause of your points of view, dont regret it and love ithe sounds thanks for your videos!
Good video dude! I’ve been eyeballing these for awhile, particularly the JCM 800.
For me, Plexi - had the least high-end fizz.
And thank you for supporting the animals as do I. 💜
My sense of beauty for once is not attacked by Hennings sweater. I quite like it. Ummp. Strange times!
i mainly want the SV20 for the cleans
i can use pedals for gain, i love the BD-2, which is somewhat inspired by the plexi distortion.
The 800 seems to be the Goldilocks of the 3 here, but I'm an 800 fan. The only Plexi type amp I've ever really liked was the YJM100. I love to hear other people play through a Plexi, but they usually don't sound as good with my hands. The Jubilee sounds rather harsh compared to the other 2. Probably the diode clipping. I had an original 87 and found the same issue. Very nice and fair comparison though. Younger kids don't know what it was like in the days before RUclips, when you just had to go on magazines and such if your local store didn't carry something. Plus now we have so many professionally produced demos and reviews like this that are far better than the old cell phone recordings of the early days of RUclips.
The plexi is the winner, I pre-ordered one but after having to cancel and reorder it twice. I got the friedman jj jr after all the delays. I have no regrets. The clean channel has a voxy chime and the be and jbe channels are just fantastic. The plexi is still one hell of an amp, its us price is a little high in the states.
