Great comparison. Went back and forth multiple times between them. The SV has the most open sound and tone separation esp. in the crunchy chords. Very noticable so.
I bought the SV20H a year ago. It's my ninth Marshall amp and the one I like the most so far. It really is a great and versatile amp if you don't need channel switching. It's got a really great clean sound and the overdrive just can't be beat in my opinion. When pushed hard it goes almost on the fuzz territory. It's also a great pedal platform if needed. The only thing I wish is that it would have that same vintage look on the rear panel too.
I thought it sounded best here. I'm a boogie guy but I do have a dsl20hr that I like alot. I doubt I'll ever get an sv20h but they're cool for sure. Sounds like a much bigger amp
Man you win the prize for the best shootout video I have ever seen. Great feel on the guitar, cool songwriting, great video editing. I have a DSL 20 and feel like it held its own, except when you went for the more dissonant chords (which I loved). It also struck me that the plexi model seemed to sound the best on all the playing styles, chords and single not or double stop type riffs. I actually played a combo version today and loved it. Amazing work man, Marshall should send you a 100 watt 1959 for all your hard work!!
Massive congrats on the weight loss mate. You look very healthy. And as always, stellar video. No shit, I'm excited whenever I see youve uploaded; very few channels I can say that about.
You do comparison videos the best out of anyone on RUclips by FAR! I love how you have these professionally recorded, and have band vs isolated. That's what we're looking to accomplish in the end are we not? When they're sounding at their absolute best, you show which one is better (or different). Thank you man, you're doing a great service by helping those of us shopping around to make an informed decision. Thank you.
I agree with the amount of work involved and the recording quality BUT, in my opinion for comparison and even reviews tracks shouldn't be doubled. It tends to level out all the subtle differences there is between amp model or guitars.
Just a fantastic job and effort putting this together. I have the DSL20H and really enjoy it and am convinced I will add the SV20H to keep it company!! BTW, the one nice thing the DSL20H also offers is the 3.5mm audio input jack on the back to plug in audio for playing along with mp3s etc. The others don't have that...
The mini plexi has the most balls. A simple boost could get it into the high gain territory of the others. They all sounded really good here. For most versatility, I'd probably go with the Jube.
Really enjoyed this video. For me, I think the SV20 sounded best, but it's hard to tell how much of that was because I've already decided I like that one the best (I'm a follower of the Church of Hendrix, so why would I want anything else) and so my pre-existing bias will steer me towards that one. That said, they all sound, and given how much less the DSL costs, it's an incredible machine.
Same here. It wasn’t as compressed as the others and sounded more full in the higher gain mixes. The Silver Jubilee sounded pretty good too, but a tad too compressed imo.
I was listening to how the Plexi didn't have that upper "fizz" on that classic crunch tone. Really like that! The 800 and the 252H both sound like the gain needs to be backed off a hair, almost like a blurry image where the plexi and surprisingly the DSL both sounded clearer yet still had that great Marshall crunch...very cool. I think also if they weren't back to back like that you may not notice, but in this demo i heard it right away
Honestly, one of the better amp demos I've seen. That's an impressive set of amps. The DSL20HR really surprised me with it's fat tone. and it's the cheapest of the bunch by a long shot. Great work.
Okay, that was the most comprehensive comparison video I've seen of these amps. Awesome job. And I'm still torn on which to get! Lol I've ruled out the DSL, but I really like different characteristics of the other 3. They all sound good, & all have their individual strengths. Damn.
Man, such a great comparison here - Thumbs up! Marshall is so reach in harmonics and has the most recognizable tone by far if comparing to other amps! All Amps sound great in this video, for me personally Silver Jube is the BEST fit for its flexibility and an ability to follow each of his small brothers tonaly with only a few potis' moves. It is such a great amp, guys! I own the 2555X for this very reason, I'm probably still yet to discover why Bonamassa, Frusciante, Steve Morse, Slash and bnuch of other guys are using Jube. For now, I know that you should first let the amp run for 10 mins for tubes to warm up, then plug in a really good attenuator - yeah, Marshall is a Marshall and needs to be pushed with at least 70% of the power to reach to an optimal working point for power tubes. I did it this week after owning Jube for 1 year with no attenuator - this is a totally different beast now! Playing at home / small stage / gigs guys with 50W even (can reduce power from 100W to 50W) is still like a thunder in a quiet forest! I tell you, SPL Cabulator + Marshall Jube = perfect combination! ..and I own also Marshall Vintage Modern 100W, DSL 2000 50W, couple of other brands. It seems like I will always come back to Marshalls, despite the fact there is a number of such great amps nowadays - Marshall plays with a roar, with such an overwhelming tone like only a few others can. "If I stand in front of my Marshall and my balls aren't shaking, I ain't satisfied". This is what I remember from Kerry King playing his JCM 800. Rock on!
This is a very well played and excellent comparison video, covering essential Marshall signature tones. Addressing most aspects, all amps sounded fantastic,. Great video keep More cool videos coming, will be on the look out.
This amp demo should be shown to every RUclipsr as an instructional. And I only found it through recommendations, didn’t see it when I searched for exactly this comparison.
I like all of them, amazing comparison video! I had to listen at a low volume (it is late around here), because of listening at a low volume I noticed that the 2525H was the one that cut through the mix best, also noticed that it was probably because of the very rich mids it has, sounded huge even thou my volume was very low. Thanks for the awesome video!
I’ve had the 2525H and matching vertical 2x12 for over a year now. Sounded great with stock tubes. Swapped them out for EH el34s and WOW! Can go to practice or gig with each in both hands. Cuts through any band mix and loud enough with everything around 6. Takes dirt pedals well to if you can gain stage properly. Turned it into a 4 channel amp essentially.
What a fantastic demo but they really do sound very similar. I’ve played the SV20H and SC20C and they sounded very different from each other in real life. So I guess the cab influences the sound much more than the amp. I’m also a single coil player, Strats and Teles, so that mixes it up as well. I prefer the SC20 both in your video and in real life. Thanks 👍🤘🤘🤘
Just finding this video but I think I'm gonna be the minority. I like the DSL20 the best. For me I think I would go DSL, SV/SC as a close tie right behind it. As for what I would get, well... all of them!!
Definitely the video I've been waiting for someone to do. I've been after a killer Marshall head and cab but I cannot get anywhere to test anything thanks to the everything going. Thanks for this comparison
I had it and regardless of how cheap it costs or where it is made, I actually had to return it because it was too freaking loud! The tones were spot on Plexi but you'd better budget for an attenuator!
Agree. There's a 50w Origin half stack 4x12 right up the street for $600 and that shit is new. I have no need for it. Stop me before I go get it and pretend it's always been there lol. Great review bro!!
IMO, having owned one, the Origin isn't in the same league as any of these. I found mine to be the thinnest, lifeless Marshall I've ever experienced. Absolutely no balls to it whatsoever. Volume? Sure, plenty of volume, but useful? Nah, not at all. Effects loop was also the worst I've ever used. "But the cost!" well if you want the Marshall aesthetic as a decoration, you've got that. It looks pretty good. "Nails that plexi vibe." No. No it doesn't. It doesn't come remotely close. I thought for sure that I could eq it, and use any of my pedals to get me into usable tone - nope. I also couldn't get any bass out of it. Tried every cab I own (1x12s, 2x12s, and my beloved basketweave 4x12 loaded with the excellent Hellatone 25s) with it all with the same result. Put alongside my JTM45, it's just not even a fair fight. Yes, the JTM is much more expensive, but there's no changing the facts. The JTM is what a proper plexi sounds like. The Origin is the worst amp I've ever owned, and I've owned a LOT of amps over the course of my 30 years of playing. Hear that chunk, that chug (albeit in the plexi vein, of the SC here? THAT is what you want.
@@stratolestele7611 really? I’ve gotten some pretty convincing tones out of my 50 albeit I’m running 6CA7’s instead of EL34’s. Running through a slightly deeper 2061cx clone with v30’s. I turn everything up except the bass which I keep at 9 o’clock. Gain is around 3-4 o’clock. Presence is up for extra bite and the tilt is used as a generalized EQ adjustment. Boosting the front with a morning glory, low gain and high treble and it sounds pretty nice. Obviously not a jtm45 or plexi but it gets in the ballpark when dialed in.
Back to back...they become more articulate but more strident as you go up chronologically. The DSL is a little scooped. The plexi is sweet but a little muddier. They all sound good and each hold it's own personality/marketing. Nothing looks cooler than Plexi! That DSL is jammed for the money...a real bargain! Love what Marshall is doing here.
I've got a Code 100W head i run through an old '87 Marshall cab, just to listen to RUclips videos. I have a soft spot for the JCM coz that's my head of choice (for guitar) since I'm 21. Yes i fart dust kids! Anyway take what you like from this idea & expand on it, there's way more tonal possibilities out there. To my ears the Silvr Jubilee came through the best (but i could be clinically deaf too!) Protect your ears folks! By the way i like the piece you came up with for this! 🤘 Hats off to ya, most RUclipsrs aren't this ambitious! That'll take you far!!
I can tell you right now that not all JCM 800's from back in the day came with "EL 34's". Back in the mid 80's through half of the 90's, I had a 50w JCM 800 combo with 2 x 12's that came with 6550's. Then I bought a brand new 100w JCM 900 2 x 12 combo that did come with a quartet of EL-34's. ( The ONLY reason I bought the 900, was because a music store in Orlando Florida was giving an incredible discount that was hard to pass up. ) I finally retired from the club scene after gigging for decades in 2002. Just recently, I demo'd the Marshall SV-20 ( mini plexi ) at a local shop, and was blown away. It had the tone I had been searching for my entire working musician career, and I love this little plexi far more than I did either of my JCM 800 and 900's. In my opinion, this little plexi ( SV-20 ) is the best darned amp Marshall has ever made for real world working guitarists. Man, does it sound sweet. It's the real deal.
All sound very good. I have an original 50 watt jubilee combo and a 73 100 watt head. For all around natural tone I still lean towards the 4-input Vintage amp. Some times the Jubilee can sound a little to dense and the natural clarity of the guitar gets buried if you are not careful. But, the Jubilee is a more varied when you put a pedal in front of it, much easier to get a balanced voicing at lower volumes.
I did try a 50 watt JCM 2000 back in the year 2001 for a band practice and I was pretty impressed by it. I use a strat and I got as much gain as I would ever need without using a pedal, lot of variation in gain levels, very easy to get a good sound.
All of them sound really good, but I just really like the thicker but not overtly modern sound of the 2525 here. It just ticks all the right boxes for these types of riffs playes here moreso than the others to my ears. Also it looks super nice as a bonus!
They all sounded great however.. I did find the SV to have more rounded dynamics sponge and quack!. Really moved me more because due to the lower gain I believe the voicing of the notes had more character. I have always been a super high gain dude in my younger year but learned over experience less gain can actually create an impact of heaviness due to clarity in tonal shaping. I like to use an mxr micro amp in front of the pre or other gain pedals for the option of higher gain without boosting volume or changing the color of the existing tone.. Peace!
Your demos are really good! The only thing that I would add are tracks that are not doubled so one can just hear just the amp and not a wide stereo version.
At clean channel they are sound almost the same. Most differences begins with gain level up. Thank you for this good review. I have DSL20HR and really like how it produces sound in single and with preamp. Also his emulated out - cool feature for silent playing in standby mode. 2525H's Classic Crunch sounds very good. Worth the money.
@@ryanjameshardy8370 You feel Plexi’s in your chest. I’m a high-gain guy too - but there’s no denying the percussiveness and authenticity that translates into, as you say, authority. Cheers~
@Just J Those are many of the same observations and experiences I have negotiated with Marshalls over the years of tone chasing :) I think the Boss TAE (Tube Amp Expander) with its own supplemental effects loop might be the way to go for these old Marshalls - of course any solution you can put together with an external load box, external loop, etc. will work. Also, the ‘Circle of Tone’ RUclips channel just did a great Iron Maiden rig rundown featuring Marshalls with dirt boxes getting smoking hot, iconic, and even modern high gain tones. I started out with probably the best Marshall I could ever hope for back in the day - a 1977 JMP 100 watt with matching 4x12 loaded with 30 watt Celestion’s. Deeply regret selling. My brother and I went through a bunch of Marshalls, including having them modded by local amp gurus like Andy Marshall of THD amps, and a few others. Had some great tones - in retrospect, probably didn’t appreciate them enough! Currently own a 50 watt Plexi on a rare 8x10 cab (ruclips.net/video/PivCyGgRWzc/видео.html) Cheers~
Well done! Excellent side-by-side comparison! I currently have a DSL15H and have been looking at the DSL20H as I've heard it's an upgrade to the 15 in terms of tone, etc. But I have to say, of all the amps here, I like the SV20H 1959SLP the best. Very clear and transparent, you can really hear everything played whereas the other amps sounded slightly fizzier/fuzzier/darker in comparison.
If you have an attenuator, you can get a pretty good plexi tone by cranking the green channel on the DSL 15. The only big issues with the 15 is the lack of an fx loop, and the fact the red channel has way too much gain, there’s a gain reducing tube you can get for its V1 position and it made me pretty satisfied with mine.
In an ideal world, with pockets deep enough to facilitate having the SV20H and DSL, each pushing their own cabinets - with an ABY box for switching between or combining those gain stages would be the perfect setup for playing straight jack! Nothing beats the sounds of electricity through wood and glass!
Another fantastic review/comparison. It's hard to split the 800 and the plexi for the most part, only when you want a bit more saturation, the 800 delivers, the Silver Jubilee has a slightly different flavour and probably the most tonally versatile. The DSL is nice sounding, but I think if I were to choose (based on what I'd want to add to the amp collection based on what I have), the Plexi would be the one I'd go for
Fun fact dial off completely the resonance from the dsl20 and you’ll get instant vintage Marshall tones! Ive set mine this way! Resonance is completely off and I’m controlling the spikiness of the amp via the presence knob! 👌
Great Video and comparison, much thanks! For my money, I'm buying the DSL. I've been debating which 20 watt amp to buy and this pushed me over the edge. :)
I’ve gone back and forth between the clean sounds. SV 16:28, SC 19:50, SJ 23:10 & DSL 27:30. To my ear in this video, the SJ wins. The cleans were the least harsh and the most full!
well that was hands down the best comparison i have seen.. really hi lighted the tonal differences and similarities.. now i know for sure the SC is for me. thanks
Outstanding playing. This is the format that comparative demos should all follow. I can only guess the number of hours to put this together. I have been on the fence with the DSL and I have to say, you've made my mind up - if I can get half as close to your tone, I'll be happy. Great job.
They make very good gear in Vietnam, its all Marshall Parts, its just put together in Vietnam Its like the guitars and Basses coming out of Vietnam, high quality,
Even the obvious tonal differences between amps... these comparisons demonstrates how important is the Cabinet in the final sonic results. All of the amps sound kind of "similar" and confirms what is always stated : both guitar an amp doesn't imply a huge tone change other than the Cabinet selection, that is perhaps about 80% of the final guitar tone. Great video by the way Jon !
DSL! The JCM800 sounds amazing, but being someone who has limited money I'm picking the DSL every time. Best bang for your buck and it has a more modern sounding top end which I really like.
Probably not so much higher quality but just different. The studio amps are based on vintage designs so they would have more vintage spec components and the dsl would have more common modern spec complaints so difference in components is more down to design.
The DSL sounds muffled compared to the other 3. The 2525 sounds good but a bit more scooped. There's something in the mids I don't like. The SV20 sounds best to me. It's has this woody character to it. Love it. The SC20 sounds very good as well. Close second. Nice video and playing dude. Cheers
Evidently, 23 people who disliked this comparison are morons. It took a lot of time and effort to put this together and all the amps sound great, as well as the playing. My favs are the plexi and the silver. Well done!
I like the simple rock-patterns that you use to do a demo. I can actually discern the sonic differences between each amp... Gotta love em all, but the '800 and Jubilee are my favs... Thanks for all of your hard-work Man !!
I’ve played all but the plexi one in person. For my needs, the DSL worked best with the extra gain stage (didn’t need an extra overdrive pedal)....I preferred (live) Jube’ 2nd.....cool vid

You are right. After intense listening the DSL is the closest to the SV20H.
A more perfect example of how to make an amp demo does not exist. Standing ovation!
It could be improved a bit with a looper playing the exact same riff through it for the A/B tests, but otherwise it's a pretty great demo

Mine came stock with Tung Sols
SV20 is like reading a poem to someone special! Best demo for these amps in RUclips!
Definitely the video I've been waiting for someone to do. I've been after a killer Marshall head and cab but I cannot get anywhere to test anything thanks to the everything going. Thanks for this comparison
They all sound great.. for the best bang for the buck is that DSL.. Held up in the mix and iso. Impressed
THIS IS THE BEST COMPARISION VIDEO ON THESE AMPS ON RUclips *Handsdown
Great comparison - the Marshall Origin 20 would been very interesting to match too.
I totally agree!!
Many, if not most, 6550's were converted to EL34's.
"I just wanted to make sure I wrote some fitting music. "
Proceeds to write an entire album for a review.
LEGEND.
best amp demos on the tube
DSL all the way! I have the 40CR and it's everything and more...
Peace!
That sounds really good all of them also great pieces of work to display that great Marshall sound.nice job brother.
Your demos are really good! The only thing that I would add are tracks that are not doubled so one can just hear just the amp and not a wide stereo version.
DSL does so much for the price it's hard to argue for anyone on a budget. SV20H crunch is glorious.
I've been debating and this video is at the perfect time. ...for the money the DSL's are hard to beat.
I’ve had this amp for over a year and for the price it gets the job done ✅
They all sound great. I've got SC20, Dsl100, tsl 60 JVM100 and jcm900. They all sound brilliant in their own way but I really want the SV20 now.
Excellently produced four-amp, three-tone, back to back comparison. Captured screenshots of the tone settings for reference too. Thanks!~
Excellent comparison. Love the plexi, but probably getting the DSL for now. Great Job.
Love that Gainy Rock tone groove, nice! They all sounded good to my ears in context lol
Just what I needed in a perfect amp demo! I would go for SC20H if I had to choose. However no bad sound in this demo.
The Plexi has a dense woody thump that’s a little less gain, but also a little tougher sounding.
Agree. Less gain but really thumpy and authoritative. And i like high gain sounds.
@@ryanjameshardy8370 You feel Plexi’s in your chest. I’m a high-gain guy too - but there’s no denying the percussiveness and authenticity that translates into, as you say, authority. Cheers~
@Just J Those are many of the same observations and experiences I have negotiated with Marshalls over the years of tone chasing :)
I think the Boss TAE (Tube Amp Expander) with its own supplemental effects loop might be the way to go for these old Marshalls - of course any solution you can put together with an external load box, external loop, etc.
Sv20 is a pedal board lovers amp, all you need
@@PainterDans The FX loop is an important feature, which makes it far more versatile. Cheers~
The DSL is nice sounding, but I think if I were to choose (based on what I'd want to add to the amp collection based on what I have), the Plexi would be the one I'd go for
and it looks the nicest
Fun fact dial off completely the resonance from the dsl20 and you’ll get instant vintage Marshall tones! Ive set mine this way! Resonance is completely off and I’m controlling the spikiness of the amp via the presence knob! 👌
They all sound great in your hands. Excellent demo!
I have the DSL and really dig it. Peace
Great review and playing!! I would have seen also the Origin 20H in it...
DSL 20 hangs with the big boys. If you cant get your "Marshall" tone out of a DSL 20 you need to buy a Fender
The best demos, no doubt. Killer guitar player too. Love it. Cheers!
Thanks!
well that was hands down the best comparison i have seen.. really hi lighted the tonal differences and similarities.. now i know for sure the SC is for me. thanks
Thank you so much ! Great comparison , waited so long.
Outstanding playing. This is the format that comparative demos should all follow. I can only guess the number of hours to put this together. I have been on the fence with the DSL and I have to say, you've made my mind up - if I can get half as close to your tone, I'll be happy. Great job.
Did you get one? Im trying to decide myself
I gotta say that Vietnam made DSL sounds great, i also love the Plexi its a toss up, the Jubiliee sounded a little thin
They make very good gear in Vietnam, its all Marshall Parts, its just put together in Vietnam
Its like the guitars and Basses coming out of Vietnam, high quality,
2525h is the best in a band context. It just cuts through so good.
Great vid as always. It would be awesome to see how the competitors stack up to some of these like the Victory Sheriff 22 and the Ceriatone 2525.
A bit surprising, but I liked DSL most! Amazing comparison!
Yess!!!! This is the demo we all needed!!!
DSL! The JCM800 sounds amazing, but being someone who has limited money I'm picking the DSL every time. Best bang for your buck and it has a more modern sounding top end which I really like.
Agreed. I have the puny dsl1 and I'm seriously impressed with the tones and volume you can get out of 1 watt with a 12" cab.
I got the DSL 20 and a 2x12 cab and I couldn't be happier. It just sounds great to me with my Les Paul and my Jackson.
wicked video! they all sound amazing. Really dig that Jubilee.
They all sounded great. The DSL held its own just fine. I wonder if the components are higher quality in the UK made Marshalls. Anyone know?
Probably not so much higher quality but just different. The studio amps are based on vintage designs so they would have more vintage spec components and the dsl would have more common modern spec complaints so difference in components is more down to design.
The DSL sounds muffled compared to the other 3. The 2525 sounds good but a bit more scooped. There's something in the mids I don't like. The SV20 sounds best to me. It's has this woody character to it. Love it. The SC20 sounds very good as well. Close second. Nice video and playing dude. Cheers
I think you were able to dial them all in to sound very similar at all gain stages, I also think your playing is exceptional!!!
Evidently, 23 people who disliked this comparison are morons. It took a lot of time and effort to put this together and all the amps sound great, as well as the playing. My favs are the plexi and the silver. Well done!
Gee, I watched that a few times. Love Marshall tones, obviously. Great comparisons. Love the Silver Jubilee, tbh. Mmh.
Another great video, another one I would have paid to see. This is quality content. Very professional. Love it! ❤️
Super demo! Thanks. All amps sounds very good!!
Luv Marshall amps. They have something special the tones!
I like the jubilee and the SC20 but the DSL20 is more aggressive than the other and is very affordable amplifier. The DSL20 is my choice !
It's such a win win.....even the DSL Vietnam sounds AMAZING
I like the simple rock-patterns that you use to do a demo. I can actually discern the sonic differences between each amp... Gotta love em all, but the '800 and Jubilee are my favs... Thanks for all of your hard-work Man !!
I’ve played all but the plexi one in person. For my needs, the DSL worked best with the extra gain stage (didn’t need an extra overdrive pedal)....I preferred (live) Jube’ 2nd.....cool vid
The best comparison video by far!
