    Wars have been fought and won using the DSL's green channel. Crunch mode all day.

      If Marshall made a single channel amp that was just the DSL green crunch it would be hailed as a classic.

      DSl Amps and M magnet speakers like greenbacks and the creamback M65 are a Match made in heaven. DSl amps with warmer vintage speakers are just perfect to my ears. They round the DSl amps off just enough and add just the right amount of warmth. I like amps that sit right between vintage and modern and Greenback M25s and Creamback M65s put the DSl amps right in that spot.

    Been watching your demos of the JCM2000 DSL50 great info - I have one and I love it - I had an original JCM800 and I never could get it to do what the JCM2000 DSL50 does so I'm glad I sold it! I use the CRUNCH channel and get my distortion from various pedals and it sounds awesome with my Marshall 2x12 Cabinet! My main distortion is a Bogner Burnley - the amp sounds great for the Jimi/Trower/Doyle Bramhall II stuff I do - add some UNI-VIBE and holy toledo the room shakes!

  • @lilyroben8576
    @lilyroben8576 Год назад

    that very last comment made in the video is one of the most important in making a choice between the 2. If playing through a real speaker cab, no IR's, no attenuator, the VM Master Volume needs to be cranked up to 6+ to sound decent, whereas the DSL sounds good up high, but also at much lower Master Volume settings. I have never had the fortune to encounter a VM in the wild to try out, but I remember when I first sat down in front of a DSL-100 with a 4x12 cab and I was really surprised how great the playing feel and tonal sound was with the DSL MV set at just under 2 on the dial. It sounded even better at 2.5 or 3.
    Excellent video!

  • @danny8134
    @danny8134 3 года назад +6

    Both sound great... but what I am learning is that you can't have a "two" channel amp with a shared EQ if you intend to switch back and forth mid song. These amps are for setting it up for one channel and forgetting it.

  • @dwayneyule1987

      Hi . I’ve just bought the dsl100 and like you say the clean is very very quiet .
      How to get round this , do you use and eq pedal to boost the clean ?
      With crunch it’s a lot louder .
      The quiet clean is the only thing I don’t like about the amp

    Great reviews I have a JCM 2000 DSL absolutely love that amplifier The JCM amp that I picked up has a C12 cap mod and a bright switch in the EQ section it will actually start sagging like a four-hole Plexi it's quite amazing that punchy type of sound with the switches engaged up

    Great demo!. I have owned both of these amps and go back and forth. I currently have the DSL 100 and a couple Bogners. The is something very satisfying about the grunt of a good Marshall. I remember struggling to keep the VM tight sounding.. However I am not a metal head but love playing old Scorps, VH, sabbath, UFO, older maiden , AIC, GNR Etc. they both do that stuff just fine. I think the VM sounds a bit more like super lead and the DSL more of a the 800 or Silver Jube vibe. A little harder sounding. not necessarily in a bad way, just different. Again excellent demo. Both amps are solid workhorses. Thanks for sharing.

  • @theblacksquirrel.
    @theblacksquirrel. 6 лет назад +3

    A nice shootout, but it's worth noting that the VM was voiced for G12C speakers, which are most similar to G12M-Heritage and whilst they sound ok with V30's they do lack some of that "character" and will give you that ripping hot JTM45 soul. Also if you want more of that Paul Kossoff sound you want the 55hz not 75hz (pre rola)

    Oh yeah, I forgot, I keep the bad monkey on all the time and use my volume knob , turn it down for the cleaner and crunch tones,and crank it up for leads , setting it up to have enough gain to pull off a souring lead, but low enough to clean up well too, again,love your stuff man❤

I run mine through a Marshall MF280 oversized 4x12 cab with Celestion V30 MF`s. Far and away the best cab I`ve ever had and I have a bunch of them. I sometimes run it through a Marshall JCM 900 1960A cab with Celestion GT-75`s. That`s not bad either but I really like those vintage 30 MF`s in that oversized cab.

    The VM is definitely a wicked amp for a child of the 70s. :P Never played through a JCM 2000. But, all the EL34/84 Marshall amps I have played through just couldn't produce the chime of the KT66's in a VM. The VM was definitely the most organic amp I've ever played through. Cool Video man new sub to your channel here! I own a Vintage Modern I boost with a Klon centaur clone and have also tried with a Ts808. I quite liked the mid boost on this amp. It felt to me like it thickened the sound a lot. I play lots of mastodon and Tool sorta stuff with this and would bet with a fuzz it would be great for doom metal type tones. Do you have a video up of the mid boost tones you found on the amp? Cheers!

    Never played either of those amps. Have a similar setup though. Marshall JTM45 into a 2X12 cab with Weber Legacies, a GDS Amplification 18 watt head into a Reinhardt 2x12 with creambacks; and an 80’s vertical input Marshall 4010 JCM 800 50 watt into a 4X12 cab with Greenbacks and H30’s. The JTM 45 being similar to the VM, and JCM 800 similar to the DSL; but with a little less sizzle running 6550’s.

    • @warmothgmc
      @warmothgmc 6 лет назад

      Leon Todd well, normally I’d go with EL-34’s on a JCM 800; however, this amp was setup with 6550’s when I got it used, and it sounds awesome with the G12M65 1x12 it came with as a combo. I did have it completely restored and re-tubed; but I stayed with 6550’s. They have more clean headroom, which makes the clean channel sound a lot better. When pushed on the dirty channel, they just have more balls with less compression. Not as “fizzy” and compressed as EL-34’s would be. I normally plug it into a 4x12 with G12M-25 Greenbacks in top and G12H30’s in the bottom, and just roars with authority.

    Just from listening to demos, to me the VM has a more "authentic", less compressed sound that is more responsive. If it had a second channel I think it would be hard to beat.
    I really want a Marshall, I just cant decide between the versatility of a JCM 2000 or the seemingly superior responsiveness of the VM or a good old JCM 800. I want them all, lol.

  • @michaeltrust5121
    @michaeltrust5121 Год назад +1

    thanks for doing the side-by-side comparison. The thing that you might be liking in the DSL is that it uses diode distortion which in my opinion is cheating. Yes in fact, they did add an extra tube, but there’s still is diode clipping in the signal path, and you can call Marshall, and if they decide to be honest on that day, they will tell you that. The vintage modern was part of Marshall’s master class Amps series to combat all the boutique amps of that time and they nailed it. It is a single channel amp so it’s really hard to compare a two channel amp that has four modes to a one channel Amp that has a boost function and yet it’s still has all the killer classic tones of a plexi, super lead and it beats down the JCM 800. By the way I was in several hair metal bands during the 80s so you may have guessed my age after that comment. Point being we couldn’t give JCM 800s away back in those days, everyone wanted super leads. back in those days you could literally pick one up for $400 and people would complain about paying that much.
    I have an early pre-release 100w vintage modern I picked up at the NAMM show and I really need to make a video on it but i’m afraid the prices are already climbing on the vintage, modern as people are starting to get hip to them and if I made a video it might start a frenzy. I’m not talking bad about the DSL. It’s serves a purpose you don’t have to bring a distortion box because it’s pretty much built-in, of course people still do and that’s probably just a taste thing. I do appreciate your videos even though the last few comments I made are a little contrary to what you’re saying keep up the good work.

    So the Vintage Modern, the DSL and the 2203 has the exact same tonestack. Its not the tonestack itself that makes it sound more or less reactive but what you're putting in to it and if there is compression after it.
