  • In a previous video • '18 Chevy Silverado - ... I had a look at this customer Silverado that came in with the engine light on and a few codes. Didn't take long to see what was wrong with it and get the parts ordered that we needed. They are here now so let's get this rust bucket back in business.

    I've run into the aluminum drive shaft problem you showed a time or two, saved the customer a bunch money by cutting aluminum plugs same size as u-joint caps, center up the joint like usual and then weld the plugs to the yoke ears covering the caps and trapping so they can't walk either direction. Obviously you need a way to weld aluminum. I use my spool gun attachment on my Miller mig machine. Good video.

      My pal had the right Idea about that, he had a steep bank next to his house,
      he made a couple of pillars out of Railway sleepers and dropped a couple more on top, from the bank to the tops of the sleepers, so he could drive out (carefully) to the ends of the sleepers (you call them ties I think). So that most of the underside of the car was accessible.
      No, he never put end stops on the thing.

It is a shame to look at these vehicles back home rotting to the ground in under 10 years. I do not miss working on Central NY cars, especially in the wintertime. I really like the camera angles you use to show the viewer the trouble spots.

    So impressed - working overhead on a fuel system and totally avoided gas running down into the armpit. Trust me, you'll only make that mistake once. Also, I've been out of the business a long time, but even with the headache of keeping the fuel pump rod in place I'd much rather change a 2 bolt mechanical pump bolted to the engine. Yes, I know with FI you can't do that any more, but what used to be a simple task is now a project.

      Getting that rod to stay in place while you slip it in at an angle and hope that it goes under the cam lever, that's a royal pain. "Just pack it with grease", yeah right. The only way I was able to do it on my dad's C10 was with a screwdriver and luck. Neither of these was as much fun as doing a diesel pump on a 1980 Cadillac Seville which was mounted in the middle of the intake. It was big, cumbersome, heavy and had a precision machined rod that you had to line up absolutely perfectly to fit into the notch in the intake. My dad and I did it when I was maybe 18 years old and it was an absolute bear. Every few months, one of the pushrods would punch a hole in a rocker arm and I would have to remove the valve cover and replace it. GM decided to convert a gasoline engine to a diesel engine. It had ice cold a/c and digital a/c controls way before that became mainstream later on. You would be lucky to hit 55-60mph, the thing was a slug. I slammed the door accidentally on my thumb and it was like a locking bank vault door closing on your hand.

    Quick tip: When cleaning around the hole after the pump is out, take a partially deflated balloon and hold it in the hole. Then pump up the balloon with compressed air till it seals around the whole. More of the balloon should be in the tank than out. Tie or pinch it off. Then do your cleaning without worrying about getting junk in the tank. When done just deflate the balloon to remove. Works like a charm. Don’t pop the balloon of course.
    Got the idea for that from a local luthier refinishing an acoustic guitar without messing up the inside of the guitar.

    • @tomtheplummer7322

      ...my luck the balloon would slip into the tank. 🤷‍♂️😏

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage Год назад

      @@tomtheplummer7322, I've actually had that happen. The tanks aren't that deep and the hole is fairly large. A set of needle nose pliers got ahold of the balloon nub thing pretty easily for me to pull it back up to seal the hole. It's also why you want a partially inflated balloon to begin with. If it does fall in it will float.

    They could easily design a screw on plastic ring for that pump. Or even just redesign the ring slot a little thicker so you could just use a thick plastic ring. They wouldn't be getting all those fuel pump sales though.. Can't take away the cash cow now can we.

      HI I work on Volkswagen and Audi cars and other European car and I know for VW they had plastic tanks since 1985 including hoses but the fuel pump opening is a large plastic nut that seal the pump cover on the tank there is no metal parts they last the life of the car but some other cars like have a metal ring like the GM .
