  • In this video I have a look at a customers Chevy 2011 Silverado that came with a customer complaint of overheating. Customer also says there is a mysterious fluid leaking a trail on the ground everywhere he goes. Doesn't take long to see the leak in the radiator tub. Let's get this radiator swapped out and get this guy back on the road.
    -Enjoy!

Went through 3 radiators before I got one home that wasn't broken (mounting tabs, feet, cracked plastic reservoir). Pretty frustrating when the install is so quick. I did go ahead and replace all the trans cooler lines, trans filter, and fluid while I was in there. Looks like they haven't changed the design much since the LS style engine was introduced in the GM pickups.

I bought a Modine aluminum radiator from NAPA back in the early 2000s to replace a 3 row brass that had mediocre cooling for my 86 Z28. That Modine has been great, I really liked the quality but I haven't seen anyone selling them in years. IIRC, they were based out of Wisconsin. I pulled a GM Harrison out of the junkyard for my 87 IROC and that aluminum unit was about the same as the Modine. I had reservations about using a used radiator but that thing worked perfectly for years up until I sold it. A used GM 140 amp CS144 alternator I bought at the junkyard from a 96 Caprice in around 2004 for $40 went into my 86 Z28 and then into my 87 later on. It survived and was still in my car when I sold it a few years back. I should have saved it and found it a new home. ( I kind of want a mid 90s Blazer). GM used to make some great parts back in the day.

You do have to line up the spring clamps up on the hose, they’ll leak otherwise until the hose gets warm and reseats!

I like the Denso units, all things considered. I like the fact that the few I have lasted 20 years and cost similar to other aftermarket units.

i found on those jiffytight fittings they cay can be a different depth and can cause problems for you. So if you run into that problem you may need to use the old ones. Be sure to keep the new ones because you may need them when you do need to change the lines out for the cooler lines ..... just fyi .... have a great one .... tech tip thursday

I’m changing the radiator on my 13’ 4.8L Silverado this weekend. Your video has given me the confidence to do this! Thanks brother!! After I get the old radiator out; could I take a hose and run water thru the truck, possibly putting the hose in the top driver’s side hose and hopefully it drains from the bottom hose (The one that goes into the thermostat)?? I want to get all the gunk, crap and this radiator fix I used (2 bottles of Bar’s Leaks Pelletized Formula and a box of their 6 of the “sawdust” type pucks) out of the truck, before I put the new one in. I hope that made sense. Thanks again for the awesome video! I’m super stoked I found it!

I put a new radiator in my 1983 Subaru brat a few weeks ago. It was aftermarket made from the best chinesium Aluminium. The holes lined up pretty good, it dropped in without a problem, and the little truck runs a lot cooler now!

Yes, aftermarket radiators are JUNK. I got one for my Ram 1500, a 3 row, and the mounting holes were made by a blind person !!! Not lining up, had to be reamed bigger to fit / mount it, and to use shims to get it to set correctly !!!! All that to save $60 !!!!! AND glad to see Luna the ferocious watch cat pay her daddy a visit to say good morning, how you doing Dad, and I'd like to chat, but it's time for Mom to feed me !!! Luna is talking to you now, she has forgiven you for locking her outside, cats are loving just like wives !!!! It was nice to see Mrs. O. come out to the shop to see her loving husband providing for her, and sealing that wonderful deed with a kiss !!! Love is grand !!! This job went without much incident and cussing. makes for a good day. On to the next task !!! Well done Eric !!! Another PRNY Avoca SMA Certified ASE Automotive Master Mechanic installation !!!! 😃👍🛠💯
