  • At one time or another, we’ve all seen a black, grey or white pipe sticking up about 2-4 inches from the ground in our yard or that of a neighbor. What you’re seeing is a sewer cleanout, and it’s the only visible part of your home's main sewer line.
    Few homeowners seem to understand exactly what the sewer line cleanout does or how important it is. But this lowly, often-ignored pipe that is capped and buried in your yard could very well save you tens of thousands of dollars in water damage.
    These standing outdoor pipes have one really great reason for existing. They give you quick, easy access to a main sewer line that’s backed up.

    Thanks for the great video Tom. I have just completed residential sewer inspection training as a supplementary service to home inspections and been watching a ton of videos to get up to speed.

    I have a cleanout in the crawlspace at the beginning of the sewer line. Would there be another cleanout on the outside? I don't recall seeing anything outside.

    What about washing machines? My problem is on the spin cycle I have water that overflows out the drain and gets on my floor. I've had it snaked also used drain cleaner many times and it still does it. So now everytime I wash clothes I stand beside the machine when it's on the spin cycle that way I can quickly cut off the machine if I see water starting to overflow, someone suggested I make the pipe taller to hold more water but the way my drain is configured I can't.

    You can cover it with an Orange Traffic Cone, or a decorative Terra Cotta Pot to keep it safe, and locate with Ease. Use Reflective Paints to help find it when you have an evening emergency 😮 💩🍦

    I have two side by side inches from the house and another one in the middle of the yard. Is it normal to have multiple cleanouts?

    My gal's 20 year old nicely built house connected to the city sewer, has no cleanout that can be found. I think somebody buried it. A local plumber told her some houses do not have cleanouts, and hers is one of them. I think that is a rediculous story. I am now researching how to locate a buried sewer line. I might have to remove a toliet to run an electronic sending unit down that sewer line; and possibly install a cleanout. 🐾🐾

      It can really depend on your location. Every location of ours has set pricing for their area, give them a call! The name is the phone number.

    Is it possible for a home built in 1967 with a crawlspace not to have a clean out? Home is in Raleigh, NC.

    • @1-Tom-Plumber
      @1-Tom-Plumber  2 года назад +3

      Yes, it is possible and not as uncommon as you might think, especially in older homes (pre-1990s). Sorry for the delay in answering you. I recommend you have a cleanout added if you're able. It could save a lot of headache and expense in the future.

  • @speaklifegardenhomesteadpe8783

    If you ask your city to clean out their sewer line by your house, do you think it could accidently clean your lines too? Lol a girl can hope... 😁👍💦

    • @jrsmom7961
      @jrsmom7961 11 месяцев назад

      Most likely no. Your service line flows by gravity out to the main and the cleaning that gets done by the city/county will only push some of the excess pressure they use back through your service line. Won’t help you with cleaning it.
