Allright, good analysis. Thank you. FEB 1943 Well, as I view it, the symptomatic problem about the 1943 Red Army offensive, is first and foremost its weak northwestern flank. However, its fundamental, problem, is its attempt, to develop too many operations at the same time. Just as it attempted to do, this very year, in FEB 2022. Simply put; too much divergence. No real convergence. In both cases, Moscow created complexity, instead of simplicity, for its troops. Irresponsible leadership. FEB - JUNE 2014 It's partly the same problem with the Ukrainian army, in 2014. It too had too many diverging operations. It too, wanted to do too many different things, at the same time. This lack of convergence is the real creator of the border unit crisis. Not the Russian weapons.

I feel the main issue with your analysis is not mentioning numbers, maybe due to unavailability or vague estimates. A constant reminder of "X outnumbered Y" seems very important as the difference between approaches fails or works. If the enemy cant man the cities and defend its surroundings, they obviously lose, from frontal attack on cities, or from outflanking.
Why did Germans fail? Because they didn't use AtlasVPN! Really nice way of putting the ad into the video! Thanks for educatinge and other watchers! Hope to see a finish of wars on Donbass industrial area this year.
@@danil6859 Kharkiv - Ukrainian city, Ukrainian name. We don`t say "Bilhorod" instead, we say Belgorod, becasue it`s russian. It`s just transliteration, nothing more.
Amazing production, information, and narration as always! However, you really need a good abbreviation for "Donbass Industrial Area", it get's a little tiring hearing it over and over.
It's less about the natural geography of the region and more the large amount of artificial obstacles created by the urban development in the region. Even then, the relatively flat steppes pose a problem if you don't have proper air supremacy, since the enemy has an easier time spotting your troops and attacking with anything it has.
Urban areas are literal concrete jungles, offering the perfect cover and fortifications for troops, while also offering unparalleled mobility due to the infrastructure, should the area be under one side's full control. In this region the steppe has been paved over and urban areas dominate the landscape. You cant advance through an area when there could be an entire brigade hiding in a single building a block away which could harass your lines and potentially cut you off. Armies need to clear out such threats before advancing, slowing them down, giving their enemies time to regroup and to setup more fortification
To add to what others have said Eastern European cities are coincidentally designed so as to basically be fortresses for modern warfare. Large concrete apartment structures mean a potential ambush can come from any level and the defender of the city will always have the high ground. It also means clearing large buildings room by room and fighting up narrow stair cases. Concrete buildings also mean that simply spraying the structure with fire from outside won't necessarily kill the defenders and even if the building is destroyed fighting through a maze of rubble and ruined buildings is sometimes even harder. If you want to look at other examples of how difficult urban warfare is look at the battle of Mosul, Fallujah, Aleppo, Grozny or the siege of Sarajevo.

In 2014 russians were not suplying the separatists with onely weapons, also many actual russian soilders were sent there. Otherwise the separatists would stand no chance
After watching this series it's making me wonder if this current Russian strategy of a broad front attack is the correct solution. Rather than big thrusts and attempts at encirclement that carry a high risk of getting bogged down and being cut-off, you aim to winkle the enemy out of its positions across a broad front in an attempt to collapse section of the front to force the enemy to withdraw. This is a war of supply lines and indirect fire, you try to salami slice the front. If you look at the position of the front lines in the donbass they have shown a slow steady progress, I remember people joking that it could take years to take the donbass, it looks like they could be right.
If the Russian leadership had not been stupid from the very beginning of the war, and had begun to fight seriously, then it would have been possible to take the Donbass even in the summer. It was necessary to mobilize in the spring, destroy the bridges on the Dnieper River in order to disrupt the supply, and so on. However, in the summer, as a result of the Ukrainian mobilization, the ratio of forces in the infantry was 3 to 1, and in September it reached 5 to 1. In such conditions, take the industrial zone Donbass is impossible in principle. Infantry can defend in cities for a very long time.
The major Donbas defenses will be under immense pressure after the Russians finish grinding on the remaining trenches and Ukrainian positions. Bakhmut will force the Ukrainian dominos to fall.

A fun fact about the troops in Ilovaisk. When they were encircled they were told to surrender their weapons and they would be granted a corridor to leave. Upon doing so the Russians opened fire on the now defenseless soldiers and killed most of them in the corridor.

It definitely won’t be easy for Ukraine to take back the entire Donbas region. Encircling it probably isn’t viable. Probably the best way to take it militarily from how I see it is to pull a similar move the Soviets pulled in 1943 by drawing away enemy units from the area. TL;DR: Not correct to say that there was separatist in the Donbas region. And here is why: 1. russian-speaker of most of Ukraine was the result of the planned russification of Ukrainians and minor communities. 2. On Donbas was no separatist before russia sent GRU under colonel Girkin/Strelkov. 2.1. Donbas was controlled by the Party of Regions from ~2000 up to 2014, including media and others. They built the idea of "Donbas as a special region" to gain more support and political power to grub more money. Real "separatist" from folks who lived in Donbas in 2014 was no more than exists right now in East Germany. By the way, hello from Kyiv, also from folks that lived in Donbas before 2014.

FEB 1943
Well, as I view it, the symptomatic problem about the 1943 Red Army offensive, is first and foremost its weak northwestern flank.
FEB - JUNE 2014
It's partly the same problem with the Ukrainian army, in 2014. It too had too many diverging operations. It too, wanted to do too many different things, at the same time. This lack of convergence is the real creator of the border unit crisis. Not the Russian weapons.
Great video but your views might be lower on this one because you decided to upload it on Christmas eve. Still you Perun and Anders Puck Nielson are the three best youtubers for Ukraine related content in my opinion.
This is a dilemma for me. Is it holidays or are people tired of Ukraine videos on this channel?
@@Eastory I think it’s holidays. You make exceptional videos and I think it stands on its own but on Christmas/Christmas eve people aren’t online and then it gets buried in people’s feeds. Your Ukraine videos cover an important niche that other youtubers don’t so I hope you keep making them.

Amazing production, information, and narration as always! However, you really need a good abbreviation for "Donbass Industrial Area", it get's a little tiring hearing it over and over.
Those Ukraine series are very good, but when are you going to make detailed videos about operation Bagration, Kursk, etc?
Could you explain the specific terrain features that hinder advance through Donbas. Usually the steppe is considered good for advance
Merry Christmas!
Can you please make the third video of Donbas as soon as possible

It's hard to fathom that Bakhmut would be a frontline city again. Crazy how history repeats itself.

May I recommend making videos on the history of the Crimean Penisula.
In 2014 russians were not suplying the separatists with onely weapons, also many actual russian soilders were sent there. Otherwise the separatists would stand no chance

GJ. Very clear.

Very interesting... I don't see any way of either side encircling the Donbas in present day, I think this war might last 5+ more years.
I agree. It seems that this is the reason why there is talk of Ukraine going after Crimea.
The major Donbas defenses will be under immense pressure after the Russians finish grinding on the remaining trenches and Ukrainian positions. Bakhmut will force the Ukrainian dominos to fall.

It definitely won’t be easy for Ukraine to take back the entire Donbas region. Encircling it probably isn’t viable.
Probably the best way to take it militarily from how I see it is to pull a similar move the Soviets pulled in 1943 by drawing away enemy units from the area. One way I could see this happening is if Ukraine cuts off the Crimean land bridge, which would force Putin to make a choice of what he wants to keep more… the Donbas region, or Crimea.

Important point: 12:38 claims that ceasefire was signed AFTER Russians pushed Ukraine from Debaltseve. In fact, Minsk agreements were signed several days before that, but Russia claimed it could not stop separatists from attacking Debaltseve. So they broke those infamous "agreements" back in 2015.
What is going on further north, between Kharkiv and Belarus?
What program are you using to make these animations. And were do you get the maps
TL;DR: Not correct to say that there was separatist in the Donbas region.
And here is why:
1. russian-speaker of most of Ukraine was the result of the planned russification of Ukrainians and minor communities.
