WW2 in Estonia - 1941

- For three and a half months in 1941 Estonia became a battleground between Germany and the Soviet Union. Being on the left flank of the German drive on Leningrad the country became split between the German forces and the Red Army in mid July 1941. After that both sides attempted to capitalize on the limited maneuvering room to encircle and destroy each others forces as Germany attempted to capture the Soviet naval bases in Estonia while Red Army did everything to retain them.
Data from the The National Archives of Estonia was used to create the map.

this!
There is actually one abou the Winter War, just search for the 1939 to 1940 Ww2 conflicts (he made the maps while indy Neidell made the speaker)

Relatable bro
Most of these battles seem like Germany defeating the Soviets in detail.
Sounds like next video will be about the same process, but in reverse.
yeah lmao
That's what Blitzkrieg seems to be to me for the most part
@@markvorobjov6185 not necessarily, the russian had the advantage in numbers. You don't really need defeat in detail if you got the numbers (even tho it's very nice)
Brian - maybe in 3 months. I know that the Estonian version will be out by month or more
It's honestly so exciting seeing all those circles fighting against each other. There must be a lot of work documenting the movement of all those little troops
You should've been there.
How do you do research on these? How long do these usually take? Either way, these videos are very well-made and it shows how much hard work you put into them.
I use the situation maps that were created by both armies during the war. This one took half a year (working on and off) to complete.
Eastory super impressive, thanks for making these

Sir, your work is simply amazing! I'm your fan! :) greetings from Brazil.
Finally! I love your videos, they are really good explained!
Hey, could you please cover the fighting in the memel region. I'm working on transcribing the memoires of a german soldier who fought there (jan 1945) and I have a hard time understanding where exactly he fought. Your videos make it easy to understand. Thanks!!
That sounds like an important and interesting task you've got there, one I wish I had the privelige of undertaking myself. That said - the chapter on Memel in Forgotten Soldier (Guy Sajer) was the most grim, heart-breaking & gut-wrenching one in a memoir that was mostly pretty rough and bleak (yet, compelling and fascinating..)
I understand what you mean but you've got to be realistic, he won't make a whole video for one person considering how much effort Eastory has to do
It’s nice to see that this channel is still up and running

Very thorough work. Well done

would you at one point make something like a how to video, on animating your maps? I guess you use after effects, but i wonder how you animate tthe frontlines etc.^^
Dude can't tell if the Germans forces were superior or if the soviet forces were so incompetent

6:40 the huge gap in the German front.
Soviet generals: I'll ignore that
Bear in mind these maps don't show the environment and not every commander had a satellite view of the battle.
maybe there were german battalions or companies we dont see on the map because they are smaller than regiments, thats what we are seeing, it's not like hoi4
I assume these animations are computer generated based on actual unit data, can't imagine the effort uncovering and typing in all that data.

How do you create these maps, really cool to look at?
This map was created by compiling many small sheets into a large canvas and then draw it over by hand. It took quite a long time.
Eastory come back, this ain't an April Fools joke anymore
Some days to wait.
@@Eastory 😃yeeee
Best video ever, very interesting. Love history
You can see why the Baltics were so eager to join NATO when the opportunity came up. Between Germany and Russia, they grew up in a "tough neighborhood" of Europe. In the 1990's and early 2000's they saw their opportunity to get free of Russia's grasp during a time period when Russia was relatively weak and inward-looking. It's not for me to say who's right or wrong, but I can see why they went in that direction, as well as why Russia resents it.
Thank you for your videos from Russia!
You make the best map videos, please make more.
Very nice video, thank you guys!
I´m honestly a little disappointed, that you didn´t expand on the Tallinn evacuation. Around 15 000 people died at sea, making it one of the worst naval disasters of all time.
He did say that the soviets took heavy casualties evacuating troops from Tallinn, due to the minefields
I didn't know that. Thank you for that:) But perhaps he didn't either!
Actually the wost naval disaster of all time is the battle of midway
@@fluffy2688 Very different situations. Midway was a battle, the majority of casualties in the Tallinn evacuation were civilians and the death toll and sunken ships was far larger than Midway.

Next: Estonian Empire ( 1273-2739 )
2739
He made a typo, I am sure he meant 3739
Rewatching this after playing disco elysium, this sheds so much light on the historical context of that game.
Superb! The presentation is first class.
I had never before considered the conquest of Estonia as a separate campaign.
This map video reveals that the German force contained no "active" German divisions, just reserve formations. Furthermore, it also contained no armoured or motorised formations. The entire campaign seems to have been conducted by foot slogging German reservist infantry!
Very well done! This resonates as many places, especially on the islands, are very familiar from my solitary bird photography trips.
The fighting in Tallinn and Estonia in September 1944 is truly magnificent, 3-4 groups fighting each other.
True, Estonian partisan units, constisting of Forest Brothers and deserted Estonian Waffen-SS conscripts, fighting both the Germans and the Soviets in an attempt to regain independence under a cabinet of Jüri Uluots and Otto Tief in charge.
Another great video, good job.
Thanks love your videos !
