It's 99 years later and Russia's tactics for solving any military problem is still to throw more bodies at it.
I love the fact you added railways. It shows how crucial they were.
They always do because they are.
The hardest part about attacking Przemysl was making the soldiers understand what you were talking about when giving orders.
This comment is even funnier when you are a Pole, the name of Przemyśl can be translated from Polish as 're-think' (imperative form)
You see this is a common joke about the Austrian Army that it struggled with miscommunication, but it really did not. K.u.K. regiments were of specific areas and recruited locally, so the German speaking regiments spoke German and were led by Germans. The Czech regiments same thing but entirely Czech. And when it came to the higher echelons of command such as brigade/division command, the staff officers there all spoke German mostly fluently. Low ranking soldiers weren't commanded by someone they didn't understand.
@@tricksor6589 I think he was referring to the Russian army, which was known for having Russian officers leading men who did not speak Russian either well, or at all. Greg did say attacking Przemysl not defending.

Eastern front of ww1 is so interesting and overlooked. Tannenberg is a great FPS game based on the eastern front, it’s historically accurate and I highly recommend it to those interested in this era

While in many aspects it is historically accurate, I find it funny how Bulgarians and Romanians can fight in East Prussia. And units from 1914 can fight units from 1918.

It always blows my mind how every side of the war already had millions of casualties by the end of 1915 and the war was nowhere near over.
And now in modern war Ukraine loses 31000 soldiers in 2 years and its deemed staggering losses

@dimas3829 I believe the nujmber is roughly around 31,000 Killed. Zelenksy is probably speaking the truth or very close to it. Mobilising 500 000 men is also support services and logistics as Ukrain ehas suffered with that, And also Rasining fresh forces as Russia will probably launch a new offensive

Great to see you continuing this series, it's such an overlooked part of WW1, and shows that the classic idea of immobile trench warfare from the western front didn't describe the whole.

@@rorronator1 by any. We in Russia barely studied it in school or university; most of people there won't even name a single battle of the Eastern Front, other than maybe (maybe!) Brusilov's offensive.
I had a book from my grandpa, which was written in the time of the Nazi regime. It was about the battle of Tannenberg (east prussia). For propaganda reasons it was mentioned a lot during those times, because there have been great success on the eastern front.
Also colonel general Hindenburg fought this battle. Tannenberg was already a well known place, as 1410 a polish-lithuanian army beat the knigts of the teutonic order. Hindenburg later became field marshal and Reichspräsident after the war.
Despite he was already old at the beginn of WWI (he retired in 1911 and came back for the war) and "sleept well" in his own words during the battle of Tannenberg, he was a political legend in Germany.
Another famous eastern front General was August von Mackensen, a hussar general. The black hussar uniform and their insignia skull and crossbones later inspired the SS-Uniform.
Still can't believe how many important historic events happened on the Eastern front in just the one year of 1915, which the history channels never mentioned for some reason!! With this just being the tip of the Ice Berg this episode could have been much longer if any of the major events were elaborated on further and the many turning points expanded on, but those are videos for another day.
I'm sure nothing happened in 1916 - 1917 and it was very quiet on the "Eastern Front"........!!!
1916-1917 saw indeed the least action and for this reason they will be rolled into a single episode.
Well, the Great War channel does cover it in pretty good detail, albeit when they began their channel back in 2014, they lacked the experienced staff necessary to make good maps like this one, thus you had to listen to Indy's narrator and follow it along a map of your own. By the time their maps improved in the second half of their coverage of 1916, they were able to cover the Brusilov Offensive and the invasion of Romania in pretty good detail, but there would not be the same amount of action going on in the Eastern front for the remainder of the war.
I love how you clearly explain wars like this, it helps me understand the campaigns more.

I find it weird how the ž is unvoiced do to following P.
I simply pronounce 'rz' as thin Swedish 'sj'. Sounds exactly the same.

Thank you so much for your great coverage of WW1. It's really good how you look at the forces concentrations for the offensives but they don't paint the whole picture. I'm not sure if it would be possible but could you also show the artillery advantage of the opposing sides as well as the manpower? Especially in WW1 the two main components of how strong your army was were men and big guns. The Central Powers' artillery advantage was the main reason of success in 1915 and the Brusilov offensive was so succesful because Russia had sorted out its ammunition production. A good source for these numbers is (as always) the Great War by Indy Neidell.

This channel illustrates the story of conflicts bettter than any documentary with talking heads could. I've learned about WWI and II all my life. But I have a vastly greater understanding of the Eastern Front of WWI after this vid. I've been a huge fan since the WWII Eastern Front series... and I haven't been let down yet. It's almost unbelievable how the central powers could attack strongholds and fortified positions while numerically inferior and still manage not only to advance, but even with less casualties
Germans only. Because they had better quality of troops and artillery. Also Russia in 1915 suffered deficit of ammunition and guns, Russian industry wasn't military focused yet.
Railways helped a lot. They could quickly concentrate critical numerical advantage and push. That time there was no long range artillery, missiles and aviation that could stop that concentration.
Because of defensive stance Russia lost initiative. Lack of munitions didn't help either.
In 1914 Russia had initiative and could prevent enemy concentration by constant threat to make a breakthrough.
That’s because the Germans has the Krupp works that allowed their divisions to have a massive advantage in heavy artillery.
@@alexzero3736 The Germans had many more artillery pieces per division than any other army, until the British and French equalised in 1916.
I can’t see how you come to any conclusion that German soldiers were better than Russian soldiers though. Russians were generally far physically tougher.

Crazy how under represented WW1 is in movies or really teaching. Videos like this are awesome to breakdown with an all senses used teaching if I had videos like this when I was in elementary or high school…even college, I would have done so much better digesting info learned.
I guess it depends the country, WW1 here in France is a big thing, maybe even bigger than WW2.

It is interesting to mention that most of the advances in 1915 were achieved by or with the help of the German 11th Army. The commander August von Mackensen and his chief of staff Hans von Seeckt had experience fighting against Russians in 1914, and were a very good team.

I understand your point, @jangelbrich7056 , but I disagree with your opinion. By hearing the music, after all these excellent videos, now my brain is used to associate it to epicness and awesomeness and thus to Eastory content specifically. I've always thought it was a very fitting choice because it was never covering the comments (of course, that would be bad) but added a notion of permanent tension and suspense which here faded (very very) slightly. Of course that is not an important aspect of the videos anyway.
On another more technically relevant note, I caught five glimpses of flickering units and at one point an entire black video frame for a split second which made me think my monitor had failed.
Evidently, if I make such irrelevant comments, it's because the videos are near perfect anyway, so there is absolutely nothing at all to criticize seriously about them: they are simply the quintessence of perfect (hi)story-telling, and allow people to understand absolutely everything which is being explained, on passionating topics. The mind-blowing amount of time and focus and dedication it takes to generate such videos is worthy of the admiration of every human being on Earth, or should be in my opinion.

Despite the previous fuck ups and Italy's entry to the war, Austria-Hungary performed rather well in 1915 starting from Spring. No wonder they felt confident enough to deprioritise the East and concentrate most of their excess strength against Italy at Asiago. It was a hasty decision though and they had to pay a huge price for that.
If it weren't for the disasters of 1914 and the Winter offensive, the Austrians may have hurt the Russians much worse in 1915.
The austrians perform better only because of the german reinforcements
Austria Hungary is underrated in this war. They fought on 3 fronts and held their ground while outnumber in Italy, managed to hold the Balkan front with Bulgarian help and had some good victories in the east, The Germans did most of the effective work but the Hapsburg armies played their part. And they did all this despite of some serious manpower, logistics and industry problems and some low quality high ranking officers AND having to deal with 13 languages
@@rhysnichols8608are you guys watching the same videos as me? They in 1915 failed to push back Russia without German help and suffered more casualties than the Russians in the winter Carpathian offensives.
They also failed to invade Serbia
Actually Austria-Hungary failed many, many times in WW1.

Becoming more specific, I think the script is the most important factor. Probably, that you are multilingual cuts a lot of words and sentences from an English language script. The cradle English speaker with no other language very quickly adds verbiage that doesn't clarify or advance but rather, clouds and fragments the narrative, padding it and weighing it down.
I honestly think that the eastern front in WW1 is more interesting than any other front
Man WW1 was such a slow paced war compared to WW2! Watching the 1941 eastern front video after this one really shows that well. Tanks and WW2 planes really made war much more offensive sided.

An excellent video- my only critique? You did not show the borders of all the countries involved I know the borders are different today but showing Prussia Hungry etc would be a big help in seeing the big picture.

I hadn't known my ancestral village was so close to an important eastern front line. It was unfortunately part of the Operation Vistula ethnic cleansing and so there would be nothing for me to see there anymore when it comes to my family, but they were still there at this time and it must have been a terribly hard time for them. (My own ancestors had left some 25-30 years earlier, so they didn't experience it.)

It's quite impressive that Eastern Front had transformation from war of movement to trench warfare to mostly cavalry maneuvers when Russian civil war started, showing how fluid this front compare to western front.
