  • Hey what’s up guys OSG back and I’ve made a return to the software houses videos, this is a Patreon request from Ralph Scheuer and I can’t actually believe I never covered this publisher before. Rainbow arts were responsible for 4 of my favourite C64 games ever and we will see them much further up this list.
They made some absolute cracking games and this was mostly when Manfred Trenz and Chris Huilsbeck teamed up although some other games without them were ok. The majority of the games on this list have a Huilsbeck soundtrack so if nothing else we were treat to some great SID music.
Anyway without more delay lets take a look at every Rainbow Arts Commodore 64 game in order of greatness.
Please like this video and support me on Patreon if you want to get some extra perks like dedicated videos etc.

The parallax on that stunt danger game was mind blowing for the C64. Seriously.

Good to see your videos. Remember the C64 and especially the SID chip. It was the SID chip that played it's part in me becoming a game music fan and discovering Huelsbeck, ,Gray,Tel, Dalglish, Furniss and many others...
Also inspired me to create and compose as a boy. I also reached a life dream to be on a soundtrack CD with Chris Huelsbeck for HU-Cast games Redux and also even better to have a Huelsbeck track on one of my recent soundtrack albums...now that was special...nice guy too.
    Keep up these great videos...

Pretty good pixel artists over there, think they took the "rainbow" to heart and tried to use all 16 colours as much as possible lol. Not always my favorite genres but they did a pretty good job most of the time. Saw some games I should try but I guess Turrican 1&2 is probably my favorites. :D

I consider myself a C64 fan so was suprised that apart from the obvious ones at the top I ain't heard of any of these games! I played Garrison on the Amiga and that's it! Are most of these obscure ones or was they released later in the C64's life? I noticed you didn't add the release dates in this one....Great list dude :)

I don't know why, but seeing the 1000th game (Bad Cat) with horrible jumping made my 'just woke up' brain wonder why so many early games have such horrid jumping in them. I started studying programming about 5 months ago. Is making something jump THAT hard?
Somehow I ended up reading what seems to be an entire thesis written by Jason Begy, some guy at MIT (or Cambridge? or both?), on jumping in video games... Coffee.. it's a hell of a drug.

I remember playing so many of them, including some which names I forgot completely! I'm with you on Danger Freak: I liked that game a lot as a kid, and now I realize that it had flaws. Same for Bad Cat, Street Gang, and StarTrash. Though if you were making a ranking of the cover art instead of the actual games, StarTrash would be near the top, that front art is amazing!

@@oldstylegamingI really love that you introduce me to C64 games I've not come across before, even the mediocre ones have their good points. As regards Turrican 2 as No1, that is a technical tour de force on the c64 which arguably has yet to be matched by any thing released since. An action and exploratory,
mulitdirectional scrolling work or Art! Its certainly inspiring.

X-Out was spoiled with its loading system, if I recall. Turrican 1 + 2, I always liked, although (due to the C64's limitations) he took some coding shortcuts with effects that grate with me, but still, superb games overall.

Thanks for cool list of games! I'm suprise however of your praise of Denaris/Katakis. Sure, it an impressive game but the boss fights are totally crap and it suffers a bit from too many levels-syndrome. X-out, while not being as inmpressive in terms of graphics, manage to do way better in terms of gameplay.
