    Modern replicas of retro machines are mainly a novelty. They are mostly heavily priced raspberry pi´s . The only thing that matters for me are the quality and fidelity of the controllers and to hack the the system to add more games or change the emulators of the system (sometimes they are bundled whit pretty bad emulators). Love the 8 bit machines of that era. And also love the modern games for those machines(specially c64 and zx spectrum) .i believe we are now in the golden age of games for those systems

    • @oldstylegaming
      @oldstylegaming  4 года назад +2

      defo mate real systems are best as everything else is just emulation..but yeah there are some great modern games for these 8 bits being released now

    • @GarryGri
      @GarryGri 4 года назад +1

      I'd say this is definitely one of the best ways to play C64 and VIC 20 roms though.
      The emulators graphics and sound are pretty spot on, the joystick feels authentic to the era, and the full sized 'clickie' keyboards gives a good impression of the original hardware (Yes, I still have the original hardware as well) and I have to say I'm impressed with this emulator way more than any other I've seen so far.
      Why bother about the on-board games list when you can easily play the ROMs you want to from a memory stick.

    Battle Valley would have been an awesome game if not for the God awful INSANE difficulty/frustration level. That Jeroen Tel music though...CLASS
    However, it WAS one of Hewson's BUDGET games on their Rack-It label, and as a budget game it's not that bad, but once again: INSANELY difficult

      @oldstylegaming If you would like to try a new version of Adventure 'A' Planet of Death for Google Assistant; you can play the game entirely with your voice providing commands by saying:

    I really do wish that there was a better line up of games here. All of the Thalamus games from the C64 Mini were removed for the full size C64, which is a shame! Armalyte is a must have game imo and Creatures is good fun, even though I haven't played much of it. A lot of the games on here are just Spectrum ports and games that really have no right being here, like all of the weird budget games. It's cool that a homebrew game like Galencia was included, but having only one homebrew title that doesn't really show the C64's full capabilities is also kinda crap. I think the most glaring omissions here are games by System 3 and Rainbow Arts. I don't know if they just couldn't get the licensing to those games, but they should have at least tried to get a couple on here. Even though I personally don't like the games, Last Ninja is a must have for the C64.

    The reason is simple...
    They only had the legal rights to the games that CLOANTO currently own the copyright to (aside from the few Llamsoft games which they got permission from Jeff from) If they wanted to put anything on like say the Last Ninja games they would have to pay an arm a and a leg just to get the rights, which in the end would have jacked up the price of the system. The System 3 C64 games are currently owned by Activision, and I doubt they would have gotten permission for those unless they paid a substantial amount of money just to get the rights.

    When licensing old games on systems like the Commodore C64, the issue is often who is the IP owner? Also, do you include fewer games that may be more expensive to license or not? With way over 5,000 games released for it, this was always going to be tough to get right.

    If you're into RPG or simulation games, all you have is Destroyer. No Gunship, Silent Service, etc. The problem is most British 8-bit RUclipsrs didn't have a disk drive as a kid, so they played tape based arcade game mostly. 15% of UK C64er's had a 1541, and 90% of U.S. C64'ers had 1541's, yet disk based C64 gaming gets incredibly little coverage. Because in the UK, these were multi-load tape versions that gamers found frustrating.

    Used to play lots on Who Dares Wins 2 and Pitstop 2 :) Think atleast 1 of my favorite c64 games could have deserved to be on your list. It's Track and Field and is a game that I really recommend for anyone who haven't tried it. It were my favorite sports game and it supported to players, which were real fun:) On that game you had to move your joystick from left to run, which ruined joysticks over time. Think Track and Field might be even better today. Today you can use gamepads instead of joystick on emulators, and set 2 buttons close to each other to left and right. Then you move a pen back and forth between them in order to run. I used to do that on Internation Track and Field for ps1, and it worked real great for setting world records. Haven't tried that yet though, but can't see any reason that it shouldn't work.

    It doesnt really matter, what games they put on the maxi, for me. But i know that if and when i get one, i wont put a lawn-mower game from 1983 on it. Or any spectrum ports, for that matter. "Maniac Mansion", "Zak McKracken", "Pirates!", "Ultima IV & V", i find missing on your list. And these days, if you are running "Summer Games II" there really isnt any good reason not to throw "Summer Games I" in there, too, since these two were combinable (you can play "Summer Games I" events in "Summer Games II", if you "own" the former). Also there is a couple of games that i found interesting back in the day, and which were also tachnically impressive, but which i wouldnt touch these days ("Destroyer" comes to mind). And then there´s "Kaiser" - has anybody ever found a version for the c64, that didnt crash when anyone starts the 3rd war in the game (come to think of it, maybe that was intentional, since it´s german and it was the 80´s, after all? - jk - i actually think it was a memory issue)?

      This summer games 2 has the summer games events in...sorry I should have stipulated that... Destroyer is one I'd never played before but since last week have spent a lot of time on...it's a proper adults game as it's a slow burner but it's a really good game one you work out how to do stuff

    personally i would rather get an actual Commodore 64 than get a plug and play which chooses my games for me, even if it was before my time, it was the gaming computer before the Apple II became the gaming PC of that era.
    and because of that, there are no doubt countless good games for it, including The Transformers, way better than that NES game the Angry Video Game Nerd drank hot sauce in order to beat.

    The graphics in Bear Bovver look really poor compared to the Spectrum version. Although I like a lot of Odin's games, like Heartland and Nodes of Yesod, there's too many of their games on this system. Can't beat a bit of Who Dares Wins 2. And I didn't even know Speedball 2 got a release on the C64!

    There are some real classics on here but I am like you, I think there are some very noticeable omissions and some games on here that really shouldnt be. Licencing might be a big part of that but some games made the C64 what it was and to not include them really does devalue the package. I wouldnt argue too much with your placement of the titles apart from having Ranarama and Deflektor a bit higher

      They never had the rights to the game. They could only legally put games
      on the system that CLOANTO (and Llamasoft) owned the rights to since
      they had deads with both companies. Putting games on there from EA and
      Activision would have cost them an arm and a leg to get the rights and
      then jacked up the price of the system. Besides you can put any game on
      there via USB anyway
