When the sounds Come together so close to my face It's no wonder we wonder what's taking place Or feel like an animal in the night Play it right Play it right (x6) Oh if my ears Were as big as the ocean I could hear All of your devotion I would be More than a small human with her head Pressed against your mouth and motion Play it right (x6) And we will move Just like we're in a movie We will speak so warm and smoothly We are Like the people we came from Oh we are Dancing and advancing to the light Play it right (x5) Oh play it right I play it right You play it right We play it right Oh play it right Please play it right You play it right I play it right We play it right I play it right You play it right I play it right We play it right I play it right Play it right (x7)
It may sound touchy-feely, but if I get the privilege to enjoy such wonderful art that somehow touched me deep inside and awakens hope and confidence, I know that all is not lost. We humans can do better, create a better world for all living things on this planet.
Amelia Meath (far right) is actually 1/2 of Sylvan Esso and wrote this song while Mountain Man was still together. So this is the original song and then it became what Sylvan Esso made it :)
Where on Earth do they find these intriguing melodies? I feel like Ive been teleported deep into the Library of Congress audio archives and the voices, melodies and songs have sprung to life.
I recall a book (Fiction) from High School that was based upon a child that was not allowed to hear music (forbidden) and had to create it without influence of others. Obviously that is not the case here but I'm very impressed. Sounded great.
Good ole Appalachian music...created without knowing what music was. These originators developed music WITHOUT EVER HEARING IT until they started making it. May it spread! Even if these ladies are from Vermont, haha.
The fack??? I didn't know that Sylvan Esso covered Mountain Man!!! What other songs did she bring over to Sylvan Esso. I love this.... I LOVE THIS. I hope someday mountain man does Shangri La music fest. It's a long shot but... Yeah.
Omg. I just did my research.... Molly Sarle!!!!!! I am now in love with this group as well. Thank you Tiny Desk lol. I love you all. It's my goal in life to find a group of friends and artists like this to collaborate with. Goals... I hope I can achieve.
I prefer the Sylvan Esso version, maybe because I've never really cared for a capella music (I like layers and layers of sounds from different sources, not just voice). This is still very beautiful, I'm just glad they chose to develop it further.
I really want to find more music like this, which focuses on vocal harmonies very centrally. Three-part harmonies ideally. (I'm a big fan of The Staves too.) Any recommendations?
This is really cool take on this song, but I'm really glad they developed it for Sylvan Esso--that version to me feels complete, while this is simple and (lovely) bare bones.
+Fueledbychapstick This is the original. Amelia Meath gave this to Nick Sanborn after hearing him live one night. They formed the colab Sylvan Esso, where they used a rework of this song as a single. Before Amelia Meath was in Sylvan Esso, she was here in Mountain Man (and is the same one singing the melody.) The version from Sylvan Esso was developed based off of this, not the other way around. :)
I prefer this version. I thought it was kinda back stabby of her to make another version of this with her new band.. Nick is a great producer, but i really don't think Amelia is living up to her full potential doing stuff with him. I think Nick would be great solo, and Amelia would be great with Mountain Man... but you know, friends grow apart
God, it is good. I love that which is good. Good + god =Godly!. Thank you god, I dwell upon your excellence. This is of few which rank upon the godly, imo.
was the beginning sort of "tuning" oo-ing section related at all to "Pristine Soon" by Cilt?? i heard that song used in the Four Chambers film Human Botany, and it sounds SO similar to the start of this vid before the song
check out this remix instrumental I came up with, it's a remix is Bobby "Bobby sore spores" www.dropbox.com/sh/p02u93jxw92bxrg/AAAvxjNpLig_uxnXewsrW-PNa?dl=0
When the sounds
Come together so close to my face
It's no wonder we wonder what's taking place
Or feel like an animal in the night
Play it right
Play it right (x6)
Oh if my ears
Were as big as the ocean I could hear
All of your devotion
I would be
More than a small human with her head
Pressed against your mouth and motion
Play it right (x6)
And we will move
Just like we're in a movie
We will speak so warm and smoothly
We are
Like the people we came from
Oh we are
Dancing and advancing to the light
Play it right (x5)
Oh play it right
I play it right
You play it right
We play it right
Oh play it right
Please play it right
You play it right
I play it right
We play it right
I play it right
You play it right
I play it right
We play it right
I play it right
Play it right (x7)
I sing this with you three every morning before I go about my day.
For everyone that needed that melodic reminder to play it right in 2024!
And life comes back into focus... joyful and mournful all at once.
Still so amazing and beautiful! I love it.
I had no idea this was originally Mountain Man. Fuck, I love Mountain man, Queen of swords, and Sylvan Esso.

There are angels envious of these...
No words for how amazing this is..... besides those words just now.... and these too.
I can't stop listening to this, I can't wait for a new album to come out
It may sound touchy-feely, but if I get the privilege to enjoy such wonderful art that somehow touched me deep inside and awakens hope and confidence, I know that all is not lost. We humans can do better, create a better world for all living things on this planet.
I literally just found this song, and the first time I listened to it, I'm pretty sure I couldn't move for a whole minute I was so stunned at it.
When the sound comes together so close to my face...
Finally found them! :) I saw them live with Feist, they are surreal.

Wait so this is a Sylvan Esso cover by Mountain Man? Um, YES PLEASE. Gives me shivers!

This is amazing!!

It's only a matter of time before they become really big
I prefer the Sylvan Esso version, maybe because I've never really cared for a capella music (I like layers and layers of sounds from different sources, not just voice). This is still very beautiful, I'm just glad they chose to develop it further.
This song is so amazing that I didn't even realize at first that there were no instruments.
I really want to find more music like this, which focuses on vocal harmonies very centrally. Three-part harmonies ideally. (I'm a big fan of The Staves too.) Any recommendations?
Thanks for the replies! Already a big fan of the Staves :) Will check out the others.
Have you heard the Wailin' Jennys? I really like their early stuff especially.
Sam Brightbart Try the Wild Reeds and The Be Good Tanyas
My Bubba is a duo but they have really nice melodies and intimate vocals.
I'm With Her

Love
If you put headphones on you can feel God talking.
This is really cool take on this song, but I'm really glad they developed it for Sylvan Esso--that version to me feels complete, while this is simple and (lovely) bare bones.
are you kidding??? this is so much better than sylvan essos'
Sorry for having a different opinion D:
Fueledbychapstick I agree with u but this is still cool :D
