As an experienced shadetree mechanic, this was extremely helpful and informative, thank you so much. We're looking at picking up a 2014 with a blown engine and wanted to know what we were up against. As you said, once you know the tricks, seems super straightforward, plus it seems these motors are super cheap from LKQ! Great way to spend a couple days with the kiddo :)
So glad it helped, enjoy those times with the kids, they go too fast!
Amazing video! Thank you so much! This will give me confidence to do it myself!!
Awesome! So glad you found it helpful. Good luck!
Nice job, I watch for the entertainment, you guys are great, but this looks like it will be really helpful for anyone replacing the engine on their Focus. Great work!
Thanks so much for the kind words, we sure hope so!
Thank you for making this video. We just replaced an engine on a 2016 ford transit connect. It has the same front end, engine, and transmission. We were able to pull it without pulling the transmission with it. It was a very tight squeeze. This video definitely saved us time!
So glad it was helpful! And that’s awesome to know it’s useful on. Transit. Thanks for commenting!
I watched a video of a dude pulling his engine from the top and that's the approach I took. I feel like I've made a lot of progress on it but definitely excited to see that you can pull it from the front. I've been struggling with it for 2 days and watching how much easier it was for you after you removed the front clip and crash bar. Man that's definitely what I'm doing tomorrow. So dang excited to get my focus back. Thank you thank you for the video and showing how the clutch line comes off. I knew it was just that metal retainer but it seems so much easier after seeing what it looks like and watching you do it.
Man we love comments like this, so happy the video was helpful for you! Good luck on yours and let us know how it goes!
@@MotorsandMischief it all worked perfect. Came out in less than 2 hours. I do have a question though. Where did you get the new flywheel bolts? Dealership wants $20 per bolt. Is there any way you can get new ones cheaper? Thank you guys again so much.
Great video gays, I'm about to do that with my 2012 Focus Diesel Auto, I would never have thought I could remove the whole front of the car. Thanks for the video it will be a great reference guide.
Thanks for the informative video!
Our pleasure, thanks for watching!
Good job, guys
Thank you for the video
Blown motor on my 2012 Ford Focus SE 2.0. Will a 2017 2.0 be fully compatible?
Time-saving tip use a little bit of bearing grease and put it on the axle spline to keep the circlip centered when you go to put it back into the diff. Requires no Tappy Tappy 😊
Nice tip! We hate the tappy tap part lol
I found an ST with a blown engine for sale, from your video it seems like it would be a pretty straightforward process to replace.
I have a crazy question. I don't know much about replacing engines or transmissions, but say I wanted to swap my 2013 MK3 Ford Focus sedan engine and transmission out, would I be able to install the Ford Focus ST model transmission and engine in it's place? I feel like it would be a worthy upgrade if it is even possible. Love this Video! very well detailed!
Thank you! And yes it’s totally possible and not even exceptionally difficult as far as motor swaps go as Ford essentially did the same thing when they built the ST. Check out the Focus forums, there’s detailed instructions on how to do it. Thanks so much for commenting!
Tiny little bit of anti seize on your cv splines and 1 they slide in nicely but 2 when you go to replace it later you’ll be glad you did
That's a great tip! Thanks for commenting!
Great work, i wished i was there 😂, i have a 2.0 too im just getting into learning to mod my focus, some things to make it clean and faster :)
We would have loved the help, good luck with your modding!
Pulling this engine I left the exhaust headers in and just held them back with a bungee. Also I left the front clip in place.
That's good info to know it can be done. I think if you're used to flatrate leaving the front clip in is a great idea. I think your average weekend DIYer might find its worth the extra trouble to pull the clip. Thanks for the info so people know!
I'm about to do this on a 2018 1.0. Should be similar-ish thanks
Hi there! Can any engine from a ford focus fit in a ford transit connect ? I’m looking for an engine for a 2011 ford transit connect. I’m tryin to save money so o will be pulling the engine from a junkyard. I just want to know what engine will fit right in with out any modifications. Thanks 🙏
Best part was seeing the whole bumper and plate in the back of the Truck lol, that was a fun visual.
The F250 wants so badly to be useful lol
great video and perfectly detailed. I'm actually planning an engine swap on my stick shift 2014 focus, with a Copart wrecked focus using an automatic transmission. This may be a stupid question but are there any differences (regarding the transmission bolt placement, or any other mounting points) between the AT 2.0L flex fuel focus, and the MT 2.0L Flex Fuel focus engines?
sidenote: this is such an interesting channel; I love finding small car creators that just make good entertaining and informative content.
So we'll start by saying we don't actually know the answer to this question, for 100% sure. However. Our understanding is this swap will work just fine. All the things that are different don't relate to the engine block or head. So you *should* be fine. But we'd head over to the Focus forums and confirm it with someone over there who actually knows what they're talking about before you dive in. Thanks for the question!
My 2014, 100k mile focus (1L ecoboost manual) broke down because of a known fault which caused loss of coolant and it overheated (although the temperature gauge never showed any high temp…). Anyway because it’s this known issue Ford are replacing the engine for free under a goodwill scheme.
I don’t know much about cars. I’m assuming that having a new engine will mean there are some issues to do with a high mileage car that are less likely to affect me in the near future. On the other hand all the other components will still be 8 years old and 100k miles worn.
Could you give me a rough idea of what I won’t need to worry about for a while and what is still likely to cause an issue/needs to be kept an eye on?
what did you do about the refrigerant in the AC lines
Had the tow truck swing by our local shop, they evacuated everything for us then put it back in when we were done. Thanks for the question!
What engine do I need if my car production date is 8-25-11 same body style just been told might need older engine
So the 2011-2017 is the MkIII and it was introduced in March 2011 as a 2012 model. We're assuming you're in the US. So from the data we can find, if your car looks like this, its a 2012. Regardless, if it looks like this, Ford launched the Focus in North America with only this engine. The MkII's 2.0 engine is similar, and the 2.0 in the MkIII is a derivative of the previous generations engine, but Ford didn't produce the old engine in the new car. At least according to the data we have. So short version of this long answer, you need the newer engine. If you're not in North America, none of that answer is right, so let us know and we'll give you a different answer. Thanks for the question!
can i fit a 1.8 engine in a 1.6 ford focus capacity
Where did you get the engine and how much was it? Just started having a tick and there metal shavings in the top end of mine.
eBay! It was $600 when we shot this video but that was before all the inflation. They’re on there now for about $750. Thanks for the question!
Can you unscrew the ac compressor from the engine and leave the AC system full of gas so you dont have the spend money on refill?
We’ve done this on our Jeep to move the compressor out of the way and it works fine. But for this particular job, you have to remove the condenser and we don’t think there’s anyway to move it out of the way without disconnecting it and if it’s not out of the way, you’d never get the engine out. So good idea for some jobs, just probably not this one. Thanks for the comment!
Hello Sir, I’ve 2012 ford focus titanium.
Already have done 3 updates
One complete overhaul of the dct transmission at the dealer.
Can i swap manual transmission for the same sedan model. I want to swap st transmission from
The mk3.
Its possible. We haven't done an in depth test on this particular vehicle, but we have on a Ford Ranger of similar vintage. On the Ranger, Ford uses a different wiring harness, different computer and a lot of different mounts. So the swap can be done but having a donor car, the complete car, is a must. Then you can just pull whatever pieces you need for the swap, then part out the donor car as if it were an automatic. Again, we haven't done this but if we could get our hands on a complete donor, like a rollover or one that was hit hard in the back, we'd sure give it a try and we'd bet it would work just fine.
Do you think I could swap a 1 L eco-boost with a 2 L eco-boost on my 2017 focus?
We've seen people put LS motors into the Ford Focus (looking at you @spottedmotors) so the answer is yes. How difficult it would be and how much of the drivetrain would be usable as part of the swap is a whole different question. Thanks for the comment! PS: LS Swap the World!
Is $525 a fair price for replacement of rear crankshaft seal, replace pcv valve and fix a couple of cracks in aluminum oil pan where AC compressor is mounted to?
Obviously we don't know the condition of the car or anything like that but just on the face of it, that seems like a very fair deal to us. Gotta separate the engine and transmission to do the rear main seal and having done that on this car we can say its not super easy. Seems like that's probably 10 hours at $50 an hour which seems really fair. We wouldn't do it that cheaply lol. Thanks for the question!
I think I'm glad I wasn't involved.
We really could have used Dr. Torque and his Ford Tool
Can I take an engine from a 2018 Fusion Titanium 2.0T eco and put it in my 2017 Focus that currently has a 2.0 and a nice knock my step son left me with.
If the swap can happen, what is involved to make it as seamless as possible? Both cars are automatics, though the Titanium is AWD, the Focus is not, but it is a 6 speed.
So the 2.0 Ecoboost Turbocharged I4 is the same from 2013-2020 and of course the engine is the same between the AWD cars and the FWD cars. We did the video on the Focus but the Fusion should be similar. So with all of that said we can say that it *should* fit right in. The transmission bell housing/adaptor should be identical between the AWD and the FWD transmissions in order to keep costs as low as possible and from what we can see, Ford only used the 6-speed Ford 6F automatic for all engines, so that leads us to believe it makes no difference what configuration you have they should all bolt up in that year range. So, obviously we can't know for sure unless we could physically inspect it but if it was us, we'd go for it off the info you have. To make it as seamless as possible, get all your parts beforehand (new nuts for the axles, things like that we mentioned in the video) and any seals you may want to do while you have it apart. Good luck and thanks for the question!
@@MotorsandMischief Thanks for the quick reply. I have one more question. Since my Focus isn't a turbo, what do I need ECU wise to make Fusion's 2.0T work? Is it just buying a tune and flashing the ECU?
I have a lift will the motor and trans come out of the bottom? Anyone know
We've seen that out the bottom is the preferred way to do this. You wouldn't have to pull the crash bar and probably not much at all of the front end. We did it this way cause we don't have a lift (we used to... man oh man we wish we still had it). Good luck with the project and we're super jealous of your lift!
Is there any other auto transmission that will bolt onto the 2 litre so i can throw away the crappy dual clutch auto?
Sounds like you currently have the PowerShift DCT 6-speed, which is well known for problems. The 6F15 that was in the 2016 Focus will work (probably) but it was put in behind the 1.5 EcoBoost so not sure that it can handle the extra horsepower of the 2.0. If it were us, we'd do a manual conversion and put a 5 or 6 speed in it. There are no shortage of crashed Focus' in junkyards all over the US and a decent yard will pull everything you need for the conversion. Or check your local pull and save and you can get everything you need yourself. If you go that route, do your research because you'll most likely need the computer and possibly the whole wiring harness off of the donor car. In fact, if we were going to do it, we'd buy a complete smashed up manual Focus off of Copart, do the swap, then either part out what's left to recoup the cost or sell it to the local junkyard after you have the manual running perfect in your car. If none of that sounds appealing, Ford did have quite a few updates to your transmission to try to address all the issues so maybe see if they have one that hasn't been applied yet. Thanks for commenting!
@@MotorsandMischiefthe 6 speed is for the ST how do you connect it to the 2.0 TiVCT n/a
