I don't know why I wanted to watch this. When I was in that situation, my unborn son didn't survive. But, my family was there for me and helped me escape.

RIP to your son. I know the pain as well because I lost my niece when she was 3 days old. May our loved ones rest in peace.

Story 2: My money says that those parents will end up on one of those estranged parent forums, complaining about how their son cut them off and they have "no idea why". Here's hoping OP takes Joe in and gives him the love and respect he deserves (though I doubt the parents would allow that as long as their golden child needs a house-elf).

Why does OP put on the daughter to do right, and not the parents? How about focusing on Joe more Instead of niece, as she's getting so much attention from the parents.

Story 1: nobody acts like that over cigarettes. That’s drug seeking behavior.
After the update: yup. Called it.

Wait. Sister walked to the store for pepto and came home with a White Claw? I'm constantly amazed at how many people don't realize the difference between energy drinks and alcohol. 😮

Of course his friends and that are making excuses for him, given that he cheated before, they must also be cheaters themselves

Story 2: NTA. OP is a concerned family member who actually notices Joe, unlike his parents who were supposed to do that. When Joe leaves the house and never comes back, and the parents are wondering why, I really hope someone in the family calls them out with something akin to "I wouldn't stay in a house where I wasn't noticed, except for money, either."

The only thing you can do is, do stuff with him. Don't give them anything for him, give to him.

last story. I am constantly amazed in a bad way how we expect humans to live in a state of constant pain (in some places) But will let a pet die for the same reason because it is the humane thing to do.

Story 3: To start, where's the ninja cutting onions? Second, Judy was a wonderful (and pretty badazz) friend. She didn't want two of her friends to be lost and alone without her, so she made like a fanfic writer and took OP and her old friend and went, "Now Kiss!"

That really is such a writer thing to do at the end of life lol. Man, I really hope for all their sakes those two find happiness for the rest of their lives.

Story 2: I'm sorry, these twits are claiming OP hurt Joe's feelings? REALLY? I'm pretty sure Joe's been feeling hurt and wounded well before the tickets were introduced to the situation, pretty much entirely by his parents and the way they keep taking from him to give to his sister.

Yeah, absentee parents ignoring the ill-favored child in place of the golden child nearly always ends with those same parents on a subreddit asking "Why did my son cut ties with us, we don't know what we did wrong" type story.
A 16-year-old forced to be so self-sufficient as to be a financial supporter of his sibling for no reason? Yeah, he should be saving up to try and rent his own place the instant he turns 18 so his parents/sister stop getting the sibling tax. Better to be truly alone rather than merely alone in all ways but financial obligations.

Wow, what a wild story! Can't believe your mother-in-law actually tried to use the key without an emergency, and then got mad when she was caught. Sounds like you handled it well, even though it caused some drama. I hope things get better with your husband and that he starts seeing things from your perspective. Thanks for sharing this crazy experience!

I don't understand something about the Second Story. That boy is 16 and has a job why does he need his parents permission to go hangout with a family member. Or better yet why does he need to spend his money on his sister's phone bill. The worst they can do is yell at him. They can't take his phone it's legally his. And even if they do. If he can't go to work he can't buy s*** for his sister. My definition they don't even have a way of forcing him to stay home. Unless they're going to physically restrain him he could just walk out the house. If they don't physically let him back in. You can call another family member and then let the police know and they'll be arrested. I know these are extreme comments but seriously they don't have nearly as much control over his life as he's letting them have. And I think he needs to be made aware of that. The sooner he gets that mindset the better. He only has two more years before legally they could try to pull more crap with him. Like making him pay unreasonable amount of rents. We're trying to force him to be at his sister's beck and call or be kicked out. Honestly it's too late for his sister Harriet the fact that they even went to family therapy without him has already submitted what he is to his sister. An outsider that's supposed to do things for her
