    I remember renting this game with a friend back when it was new. He was into golf, and I could care less. However, when I saw the digitized-characters, I was blown away. We both were. We didn’t think that video game graphics would ever get any better. In the end I ended up liking the game so much that I ended up buying a copy a few years later.
    It’s pretty cool that most of the people on the team that was behind the construction of this title went on to make some really great titles as their careers advanced. Thanks for dropping that knowledge as always!

      Thanks for the comment Paul, I always look forward to you chiming in. Did you rent PGA or Fred Couples? 32X games for rent... I would have been in heaven had that been an option where I live. I'm in the same boat as you having been blown away at these games when they were new. Graphics aside Wimbledon Championship Tennis was the game coving a sport I could care less about that I absolutely loved to play.

      Jenovi There was a great video rental place in the 90’s that rented everything. That’s how I got to really test out a game before I bought it. I can almost remember the smell of that place. Great memories trying to make my decision while my dad would quickly loose his patience. Ahhh the good old days!

    I had to watch this again because it’s so well written. I am not a fan of golf but not only do you make me want to play some of these games but I’m just fascinated by everything I learned from
    Watching this. I can’t wait to dig through all of your other videos. So glad I found you a while back. I’ve mentioned this before but you have done so much for our community and we are really lucky to have you making these videos to preserve the legacy of some of these amazing games. Thank you Jenovi.

    As someone who doesn't care about golf or sports games in general, I found this really interesting. My friend owned all of these and I remember those FMV fly throughs. They looked horrible then but somehow nostalgia makes them a pleasure to watch now. Great job as usual man.

      Thanks man. Sports game comparisons are really fun due to fairly set rules and game play every developer is trying to replicate in their own way. It’s fascinating to see the different approaches to essentially the same problem.

      Playing a couple of these games for this video was a lesson in patients. The better ones however were kind of addictive and relaxing to play.

    I'm surprised US Gold never released any of their Leaderboard series on the 16-bit systems, as they were regarded as the defacto golf series for well over a decade (with World Class Leaderboard being the pinnacle)
    I know they did a Master System release, bizarre they never went any further.

      I'm embarrassed to say, this is the first I've heard of Leader Boad Golf. I remember picking up magazines in the early 90's discussing how links golf might be the game of the year. I had never played or seen anything golf related but miniature golf, but if this was the best game to release that year, I had to own it. Ahhh not too many hours invested I'm afraid. I still have the game though. It came on two floppies.

    Liked that it was a comprehensive review instead of being used as cannon fodder to ridicule about just because it's golf as I always see on other channels. Even Digital Foundry did that in their 32X episode - it was kinda funny, yeah - but it didn't really fit in with their goal they achieve otherwise - comprehensive technical analysies. Would have been more useful if they said if it's a good or bad game, regarding the bad reputation many 32X games have. But now I know that - for what it is - it's worth a play.
    And I think I still have that PGA Tour III copy for my Mega Drive which I once got together with Bubsy (got rid of that turd though since)... The flea market seller just had those two games and PGA was basically free. Unfortunately it's missing the manual.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  6 лет назад

      That's high praise Nox. I appreciate it, but my head is swelling just a bit. Digital Foundry is great, but in glossing over the 32X library, they really missed the mark when discussing some games. It's still a great episode overall though. I plan on tackling the remaining non Arcady 32X sports games in this same fashion. For me, it's the only way that makes sense.

      I don't think I'll ever understand people that put down certain genres without accounting for the quality of the individual games. All the hate for video pinball, tennis and other genres is baffling to me. Not being a fan of the sport I can still aknowledge how playing these while sipping a cold beer after might be a great way of relaxing and having fun after a tough day.

    PGA III it's a good golf game and a so great game in general, I've passed hours of fun with that game. 36 great holes starring Fred Couples for the 32X I never played it, I should be try it.

    This was actually exactly what I was looking for. Great video! Now I wonder how these stack up to the other systems of the 90s, such as the snes.
    I really love the "Golf" game for nes though, it's great in its simplicity.

      Not exactly. It was made for the 32X with an enhanced version in development for the 32X-CD (like earth work jim). It’s believed it was done or close to it when cancelled.

    SEGA Trifecta!!!

  • @TheFancifulNorwegian
    @TheFancifulNorwegian 3 года назад

    The load times on Links were bad, but TBH they weren't much worse than waiting for the view to render on the original PC version, which typically took a while unless you cranked down the graphics settings or had an insanely fast system. The load times would've been at least marginally more interesting if the Sega CD version had drawn the view in real time like the PC original, where you got to see it gradually build up as a series of individual layers. My guess is the Sega CD port worked in a fundamentally different way that made this impossible.
    Of course, the reason so many people were willing to tolerate that slow render speed on the PC version is because Links was a graphical showcase, to the extent that it was often used as demo material for display units in stores. Reducing everything to 64 colors for the Sega CD did it no favors, and the heavily dithered graphics used for the rough remind me at times of somebody going nuts with the Clone brush in Photoshop. The discrepancy gets even bigger when you consider that the Sega CD version shipped two years after PC gamers got Links 386 Pro, which added SVGA support with 256 colors at 640x480.
    Also, the funniest example of a golf game getting rebranded during the trip from Japan to the U.S. was Toho's Super Famicom game Serizawa Nobuo no Birdie Try, which got localized as "Mecharobot Golf" and swapped out Serizawa Nobuo for a terrifying android golfer.

    Great video! I’ve only played a few golf video games, like the NES Golf and Arnold Palmer on the Genesis. Probably spent more time on Arnold Palmer Golf than I should have. :P Haha. My grandfather and my older brother played golf a lot when I was younger. So I guess that was why I played the video games. Again, great video. :)
