- Steering a ship the size of the MSC Divina into a tricky port like Ocho Rios, in the western Caribbean, requires the harbor pilot on hand to assist. One problem: He's nowhere to be found.

“And touch down”
Now that’s the sound of a man who’s father forced him to be a sailor when he wanted to be a pilot.
I think touch down is an american football term or else a rugby football term, I,ve heard it used a lot in commentaries from both codes.
@@jgdooley2003 yeah but in this context he’s talking about the plane term he isn’t talking abt the touch down term in football
Pilot arrived 20 mins after the first contact , so how was he late 🤷 ships have to wait up to an hour or more sometimes before a pilot comes on board. There is lot of procedures that needs to be followed before a pilot is sent to the ship .
A pilot is never late, nor early. They arrive precisely when they mean too.
I've been on 13 cruises and arrival to ports are always early. Even when returning to homeport. Can't blame the pilot when the ship is due to arrive at a certain time and arrives too early. Many pilots multi-task by serving other ships too. They may get off of one ship just to go directly to another for berthing or departure.
Captain
That’s not true at all
It's good to see you gandalf
@@micahroberts4481 It's a joke about wizards ya dingus.
And here I almost failed my driving test because of parallel parking lol
Parallel parking would be easier if cars had lateral thrusters.
Samuel H.M kbl
I would hate to admit that.
It would be hard if u were doing on a texture like ice and wind hiting u
Lmao right 🤦😂😂
It wasn't that the pilot was late, It was the ship was early. Other wise the ship couldn't of still been on time.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!
not necessarily. If the pilot was late, but the docking went extra smooth, they still could have been on time
Not every Jamaica especially our Marine Pilots are tardy
"couldn't of" ?
My Bunny Rabbit says you're Right!!!
My home town, that where I used to swim every Sunday as a kid, we used to climb on the pair and dive off!!!!
This dude is so dramatic, he's obviously never seen Tokyo drift
LOL
hehehe
Captain: Ready to dock the ship (Drifts ship in to port )

Carnival funnel masts: *hold my coconut juice*
Tokyo drift, Shanghai approaches, Singapore strait... Disaster for master ...
Pilot moving on Jamaican time
The weed there is so crap. All outdoor bunko shoved in your face constantly, bought some for like $20 n got seeds/stems/straight mids. The whites cut 70%+ with who knows, I didn't do any but from what my friends said they said it was shit compared to home. If you go to Jamaica for anything drug related you're a fool, although they do make super super good rum, both clear and dark.
WreckitRalphed lmao u and your friends got sold garbage. You can't judge the entire country because of 1 person
lmao kid i've been there 4 times, heres an idea for you though since you think you know everything; go there, buy the shit, post proof if its good. other than that stfu.
Jamaican weed is garbage
Weed is garbage
Did anyone really think a Jamaican would be prompt?
M....
I mean the fastest person in the world was born there
I love how the Jamaican people say soon come.
I am a jamaican and i agree...sadly😔😔😔
As a proud jamaican, I have to agree with you, wi evah late
Captain Scala is a wonderful person. He was the master of Carnival Legend for many years and who knows how many decades before that has he been at sea. Trust me. These guys are unbelievable. Molto Bene, Captain Scala!!
To me, cruise ships are floating cities
More like a floating septic tank rofl
Would you rather have it not in a tank?
to me, cities are just land locked cruises
Floating cities with no laws
ZuluAlphaCH TTV Go ahead and murder somebody and see if there is no laws.
The pilot was on time. The ship came in too early. They docked according to schedule, did they not? Smithsonian TV trying to make this dramatic. Shame on them.
1:24 tokyo drift
I was just at Ocho Rios 2 weeks ago on the Carnival Vista when Hurricane Irma impacted Florida! It's a very nice port, much better than Falmouth where they curse you out for not buying stuff and crowd you!
Acc0rd79 Irma hadn't hit Jamaica or,Florida 2 weeks ago
Acc0rd79 c
Hockeymaster10 didn't hit Jamaica at all
Jamaican Me Crazy my bad
Acc0rd79 how is the vista in June I went on the freedom
So impressive the skill and coordination of these crews. Love it.
I’ve been on the MSC Divina before, and the ship and the Port is absolutely beautiful!
We took our first cruise 3 years ago in Feb, this was our first port of call, stood on the deck and watched as we came into this port, beautiful calm weather in the morning and while on the beach, but when ready to leave port, strong gusty winds and a little rough water. Just like this video when he said sudden changes in weather and water conditions.
I thank you for this wonderful publication on cruises .... I love
Very cool video, I liked how it was only dumbed down a little and that they explained the rudder flaps.
Like trying to drive a high-rise building. Wow.
And from the 3D animation, those rudders look nearly useless. I thought they'd be nearly twice the size or that they would have two more.
wanna be friends?
Angel La Canfora they all think it's easy parking a 1,300 foot ship. And lots of Sunday quarterbacks too
Angel La Canfora I got this
@@largol33t1 bad animation also agreed.
Jesus Christ... I was on that exact boat at that time. 2 years ago, I was on that cruise ship and I went to Jamaica on that boat. I was one of the passengers on that boat.
You’re lucky man
Amazing. Awesome. So now you’re not a NOBODY. You’re a somebody at last. Tell me something else that’s fascinating about you.
Typically cruises flip so they probably did this one week then something else another than the next this one
Also why not toast
Toast is better haven’t you heard about the civil war or the bread war
Had a blast in Ocho Rios this past week on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam. Jamaica gets a bad wrap... but the local people were very nice and the city is safe. Went to an amazing beach and then had some bomb jerk chicken and found a bar with $2 rum and cokes in the city center
Been in that port, the native foliage is GORGEOUS when you pull up. I was sitting on the deck of our friends aft balcony, so I got a really great view of the island as we were porting
Was on a cruise and we docked at this port, took pictures from the deck as we docked, great experience on first cruise, remember that turn. Like they were maneuvering a building, cruise ships, beautiful floating cities.
I had opportunities to manoeuvre big sized ships. This is a challenge. Especially going up Ghanaian rivers. Good video up there guys 👍
0:40 sec, why is there just a propeller sitting there😂
Spare prop. as required by maritime law.
"Oops forgot to install that one, any1 have a screwdriver?" -engineer
Spare propeller and spare anchor.
that was very cool to see behind the scenes
I was on a cruise at this port many years ago, and a stiff breeze picked up while we were docked. When it was time to leave, we were unable to because the wind had the ship pinned to the pier. The crew had to call for a tugboat to help pull it off the dock.
I've been there. Didn't think my captain had any struggles. Good Job.
Its so cool to see how the ship gets into dock after just crusing for 9days 😊
Sometimes i have a hard time docking my 14' boat in the wind. I couldnt imagine docking that giant beast!!!!
Practise my friend.
I went on the msc seaside 2 weeks ago and it was so fun watching it dock
We traveled on the Norwegian Epic in December 2017 and they actually ported at that cargo pier lol weather was bad and there were already other ships ported at those ship docks. Epic actually ports on the other side of the island but because of bad weather we had to go to the other side (this side with the cargo pier.) We already missed Bahamas due to bad weather so they weren’t about to miss another port. It was cool because our excursion was a two minute car ride down the road (zip line/bobsled) then we hit up Margaritaville for a Red Stripe! YAH MON!
I went to Ochoa Rios on the MSC Divina in April of 2017.It was crazy trying to dock it
Now I can dock my Cruise Ship properly. Thanks Smithsonian!
Adapa yeah but for me it’s a little bit harder with the oasis of the seas
I lived in that area all my childhood. I would say that if it was a Sunday there’s a good chance that I was on that beach
Excellent job docking Captian Stubbing !
Hahahaha! While on JamCruise, we smacked the pier pretty hard, -it exploded in a puff of concrete. This was on the MSC Poesia, in 2012. BAM! Also, the ship hit a bouy, and it was pulled the full lenght of the ship.
I remember the crazy turn in 2005 on my first cruise, Carnival Triumph. We were so impressed.
The ships always fill the waters very huge and beautiful
That Cargo Pier is the same pier that was used as the base of Dr. No in the James Bond film by the same name.
The cargo pier was once Reynolds bauxite pier They also use to ship sugar from there
My hotel was literally right next to that port. I always saw ships docking, but it didn’t seem to be that hard. Look at 3:06 in the background. That’s it! Moon Palace
that pilot once my pilot here in port rhoades everytime we dock and undocking.. 👍🏼
The US Navy ship I was on docked at Ocho Rios, probably 24 years ago or so... great little city. Coming in wasn’t too bad, but leaving we ran over some buoys and snapped at least one line, which promptly wrapped around one of the screws. Never forget watching the Captain, Chief Engineer, and MPA in dress whites, tearing into the reduction gear, before they realized what had happened. We couldn’t really go into any of the shops, because we were afraid we’d get a contact high, and we new dang well that we were going to get drug tested after spending a weekend in Ocho Rios. The Grand Jamaican hotel allowed us to use their facilities, so we shut down most of their bars. Red Stripe is def. an acquired taste...
ive been to ocho rios twice, and this has happened both times, on different ships.
The bridge looks like an office with plants and wood floors
Very interesting, I did enjoy that!
I was just in Ocho Rios last month! Beautiful city
About Time I was at Moon palace in August, I might have see you!!
Im going soon!
On next trip to jamaica visit portland and buffbay they have nice beach.
It's a town really, not a city
the most humble captain of msc cruises, comandante La Scala now he retired as captain but still works on company, and there was Staff Captain Bono besides him, the most dangerous staff captain of msc cruises 😅
Are bad mouthing an enemy
The pilot, like everyone in Jamaica is on island time!!!
Exactly
I went to it on the Carnival Vista, they docked easy though. We were on time to get off the boat. Smooth and easy turns it looked like from the Lido
When I was in Jamaica on my cruise there was a tornado forming but wasn’t terrible.
My blood pressure would be through the roof!! Well done.
I hate when these guys don't answer their radios. You just gotta get as close as you can and yell at them over a megaphone.
They just dont care. It is something about their race and culture. They knew the vessel would be there and they still wernt around ? Ignorance or lazy ?
found the bigot
What did I say that was incorrect ??
kim621100 don't bring race into this. Culture yes, but not race.
I work on a cruise line. They are like this on all of the ports of call. Turks and Cacos,Bahamas, Haiti. There is something about them. Can you name one of their countries that is not an impoverished violent , high crime, mud hole ?
It’s routine job for captain. Almost 3500 passengers & 1500 crew super excited.
0:40 superhot sailor alert.
They are rather hot
3:03 the resort there is moon palace and I went there and it was really nice
We’ve stayed there too. Great place. Our room looked right out on the cruise ship dock.
My hotel I went to in August was right next to where this ship docked in Ocho Rios it’s called Moon Palace pretty expensive but worth it at 3:06 you can see the hotel building, that’s pretty dam awesome
Blumac5 yo i love that place i boutght the loyalty program and i go there every time in the suummer and sometimes in the winter, they have so much fun stuff to do and they have multiple hotels everywhere
Nice hotels but next swing by portland jamaica nice beach.
I was just on the Recent Norwegian escape and we could not dock and i was mad because both sides of my family are from Caribbean islands St Thomas And Jamaica and it would of beem my first time om jamica. If you going ask i was born in St Thomas. But im more likely flying down this spring or summer. If you also ask im 13
I once went on a cruise that went from Miami to Jamaica like this one
because if you touch anything or hit anything, the accident prevention specialist will match up the pool with the point system, which mean you will be on probation for 6 month to a year, you'll have to do a road test, and then you have to do a worksheets on how to protect youself from HPVOFO accidents.
Now THAT'S drifting
when they made the port side turn it reminded me of a scene of fast and furious Tokyo drift
0:55 he knows that he will loose his job even if he docks the ship safely without a pilot which is very unlikely
Jamaicans are never on time Lol
Sebastiansrandomstuff10 weird stuff, ugh i hate that
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They just up in everyone business and ignorant.
BIKE GEAR MOTOVLOG that is so racist!
not really, I'm Jamaican and I personally agree
Been at that dock so many times it's to fun there
next pls do doc about security around the ship. How well they respond when attacked by pirates or have emergency ordinance on board?
I keep thinking it's gonna say WHAT YOU KNOW BOUT ROLLINH DOWN IN THE DEEP
That bridge sure looked different than I was expecting. Very large with no chairs.
Cool ship. I love this show. I love cruise ships
Under water animation shows 2 rudders and 2 prop shafts and 4 bow thrusters, most modern passenger ships have azimuth pods that swivel which negates rudders and prop shafts and one or 2 bow thrusters.
“We have to watch the sturn when we turn”😂😂
What's funny about that?😀
Oie, sah! Ah workin' with island time, mon! Just cool nuh, mon! Irie!
Italian captains always make cruising a lottery.. My best regards to Mr. Schettino
Early/late depending on where you are. If you're in Jamaica; that pilot boat was like 2 hours early.
If you're the Capt of the ship; he was on time.
While Mexicans will say we'll do it "mañana".
Jamaicans are early, even if they're 2 days late.
No rush, no worries.
Like; dat bot no goen' anywheres; wat da hurry?
i just came back from ocho rios!! i went to the hotel shown in the thumbnail and in the video. it’s called moon palace!
When the ship arrive people take your bus to portland jamaica its nice beach to relax and friendly local.
You have to be a pilot so they have to wait for you, I came here after watching the couple was left behind in inside edition video
Very nice... Thank you..
after the unfortunate devastation in the islands in the lesser Antilles there will be more cruise ships probably double going to Jamaica now in the next few years so they better perfect a docking at ocho rios
ann magno you wish where will they go then Jamaica is the number one port of call in the Caribbean
I always see this ship in Montego Bay from where I live it's so huge.
As a captain, it is a calamity, a balancing act when you are dealing with wayward winds, multiple inbound, outbound, port and starboard tidal currents, bow thrusters, prop pitch, steering pitch, along with keeping a smile on your face. Now to boot, a port pilot that did not follow protocol, by answering the ships bridge request for his service. If not for a ships load of anxious vacationing folks, I would have detoured to the next destination.
Lol no you wouldn’t.
You would not. Unless you want to get into trouble with your company (which may cost your job)
23mph wind? Yeah right the weather looked extremely calm
I was on this ship in July of this year 😂😂😂 lovely ship
This happen to me when we were on a royal carribean cruise that they were waiting for the pilot boat to come help guide them in
I was on msc divina from 12/23/2017-1/03/218 beautiful ship but the places we went were bad specially colon panama and puerto limon Costa Rica
I was there 5 years ago! Yellow hotel top floor Ocho Rios!
I'm surprised they didn't talk about how many ships get caught up on The Sandbar in Jamaica near the James Bond Pier. It's been many years since I've been to Jamaica maybe they have finally dredge the waterways better. But approximately 10 years ago ships used to get caught up on The Sandbar. Some ships even had their props damaged causing the cruise ships to shudder and Shake. Until a drydock and properly balanced or replaced.
It is shallow. We were just there (last week). We we pulled out it stirred up a bunch of sediment/sand from the bottom.
J/C too, been there and cruise ship pulled right in the dock was tiny
When they said dangerous I was thinking about pirates
So interesting.....I know now that I missed my calling as a "Master"' and a life at sea.
Maybe it was more financially viable as an actor in films like
'Shawshank Redemption' , cheers .
My Brother in law is a pilot, Brings in Aircraft Carriers and such... much respect
Did this cruise. It was great 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
its funny I get this video after going on a cruise and finding out we weren't going to Honduras because a mcs ship took out the port
I was on that cruise that same day and the same cruise and I love it also the cruise was supposed to go to Puerto Rico but hurricane Irma was there so we had to go to jamaka and it's true because I was on it
But you can’t spell it sure......
Nice come and visit portland jamaica next time nice beach.
Build an under water rail system with rollers to guide the ship in every time perfectly or improve autopilot software
I was swimming in that bay there watching the ships come in at that exact port a little over a year ago. Moon palace Jamaica for anyone wondering
Dhats cool, mon.
Island time man! Nothing surprises me at some of those islands...
I went to this port on a cruise ship it took about an hour to dock and we ended up docking at the cargo dock to so yeah
i have been to that port on the carnival victory a few years ago there is very little issues docking on the long dock but the short one were they used to load bauxite ore is tough
the Victory is a much small ship though
