    Titanic was an ocean liner. It was what people used to cross oceans in place of airplanes, and as such it was a transport ship first and a luxury ship as a distant second. Most people on Titanic didn't see it as a cruise. Even the lowest class on a cruise ship today is still meant to be enjoyable, but steerage in Titanic was just bare-bones transit. Plus, an ocean liner just goes from point A to point B with maybe a stop or two on the way to point B, while a cruise ship can go to any number of points, or even linger in the ocean for a while.

    Crazies thing about Moss HIll is he was a hero two separate times. 3 years after the sinking of the Oceanos. He was on the Achille Lauro when it sank in '94. Though the crew and captain stayed and didn't abandon their posts unlike the Oceanos. But that didn't stop him from doing his best to make sure passengers got onto life boats before he and the crew got themselves to safety.

      Yeah and I saw the story of the Oceanos and with the way the ship sank is just like the Titanic where like the Titanic sank by the bow the Oceanos sank the same way minus the only difference between these 2 ships is the Oceanos sank from taking on water from a storm whereas the Titanic sank after striking an iceberg.

  • @Da_SpongeGun
    @Da_SpongeGun 2 года назад +116

    I like how he doesn’t even explain how the water got in the Oceanos. I believe the pipe connected to one of her ballast tanks burst because of the waves. Usually the watertight doors would keep her afloat, but during the voyage, passengers complained about a nasty smell coming from the ship, and so they removed a sewage pipe to try to fix the problem. Unfortunately, water was able to get through this open pipe and flood the rest of the ship. So if you were wondering how the waves made her sink, here you go.

I have a kinda funny but weird story about being on that carnival ship. After the fire started, on the second morning of the cruise. I had a dream that there were two dogs 🐕 that were tied up to the ship to help toe us back to California. The next morning the Captain came on the intercom announcing that they will be sending two tug boats to our ship to toe us back to port in Ca, well when the tug boats showed up there were names on the side of each boat, one was chihuahua and the other was another breed of a dog. I couldn’t believe I dreamt that! We did end up taking the makeup cruise which was fine, however I will never go on a Carnival cruise again!

    Titanic was an oceanliner, not a cruise ship. There is a difference between the two, although most people just combine them into one classifcation. That being said, I don't know if I'd say the Titanic made the top 5 most expensive disasters though. I will agree that the Costa Concordia is up there probably in the top 5 based on the amount of work that was done to salvage the ship (lift and then tow it, not to mention any compensation to families).

When the survives made it ashore nothing and no one was there to provide assistance. The fact the Captain grounded the ship was more by luck than skill. The Morro Castle fire was due to the storage of blankets in a closed locker on the starboard Prom Deck. The blankets had been dry cleaned before being stored in the locker, and the dry cleaning fluid was breaking down, which caused them to get warmer, then hotter, then spontaneously start burning. Stewards who discovered this tried to put the fire out, but all of the fire stations in the area had had their hosed removed on the orders of the Captain because on a previous voyage some passengers had been injured when other passengers were using the fire hoses for water fights.
    Due to the death of the captain earlier in the voyage, every member of the officer complement had moved up one position, and thus were not familiar with the duties they now held. The ship was allowed to continue on course at full speed, which fanned the flames all down the starboard lifeboat deck, thus making those boats unusable. This also delayed the sounding of the alarm. The radio operator attempted to broadcast an SOS, but due to a communications procedure foul up was unable to get through to the Coast Guard. The number of things that could go wrong is absolutely mind numbing.
    The Ship Architect who had designed the ship was so horrified by what had happened, that the vowed to never use wood in ships he designed, In fact, his next commission was for the SS United States, on which the only wood was the butchers block in the Main Galley.

    Cruise ships and ocean liners had complete different purposes. Ocean liners like Titanic were meant to carry people and items from point A to point B. They included amenities to entertain and make passengers comfortable as they made their crossing. Cruise ships are built to be entertainment centers on water that you are meant to enjoy while you travel to multiple points to explore & enjoy yourself. Others have said it already, but I'll say it again. Titanic was NOT a cruise ship. Cruise ships weren't a thing until the twenties and thirties, and even then, they were a small part of existing ocean liners as a way to make up for the lack of immigration. Until the mid fifties, cruises were still only a part of sea travel, with ships being built for voyages across the seas as their primary functions. Cruise ships didn't start replacing ocean liners until airplanes took over the travel industry. Nowadays, people rarely take ships to cross oceans unless it's for a holiday (or, a cruise vacation). The only existing ocean liner (that functions as an ocean liner and not a cruise ship) is Queen Mary 2.

    • @SwedishAlicorn
      @SwedishAlicorn 2 года назад

      @@SeanJ2A Ocean liners aren't really comparable to cruise ships in the same way. They both carry passengers, but for very different purposes. Ocean liners dealt heavily with immigration and passengers were sorted by class. They were the only means of travel across the seas until airplanes took over. Cruise ships are only intended for fun and relaxation. Everyone on board is considered equal. The ship herself is the destination as everyone there is on holiday.

    Many of the people who died onboard the Titanic, were deliberately locked below decks, because they were poor lower class passengers, who were emigrating to the US. So they were the victims of class prejudices of that time. It's also now known that there were not enough lifeboats for the size of the ship, there had been a long running slow burning fire in the engine room, that had damaged the ships hull which also had faulty rivets and the ship was travelling faster than was thought at the time.

    • @russellwebb4805
      @russellwebb4805 2 года назад +4

      No passengers were locked below deck. Some doors/gates were locked preventing third class passengers from accessing other areas of the ship (due to regulations regarding quarantine, I believe), there was no attempt to lock third class passengers below deck.
      It was known at the time that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board, but there were enough to satisfy official requirements at the time.
      The fire was in a coal bunker. This was not uncommon and had little to do with the sinking.
      Some make much out of the percentages of passengers saved by class. While it is true that a far higher percentage of first class passengers from the Titanic were saved, one should be aware that there were a far greater number of third class passengers.

    Many years ago i had several 48ft trailers full of top quality foods to stock a smaller cruise ship called "The Empress of the North" was a HUGE paddlewheel steam style ship. small for a cruise ship, huge for a riverboat style. Was first delivery of the season to an empty galley and store room. The ship hit the dock in Juneau AK and ripped a 100+ foot gash in the side. Lucky for us, food was paid for, i bought 2 chest freezers and took uncut rolls of ribeye, lobster tails, 20lb cases of bacon, 40lb cases of baby backs etc. After we took was we wanted or could fit, the rest was donated to the homeless shelter, so for a while the soup kitchen was serving steak and lobster and scallops etc. That was the 3rd or 4th major issue with that boat, one being an outbreak with everybody puking and shitting all over the boat. I think it did one more season then was decommissioned.
