I think "making love" is all about bringing in all of the affection and caring feelings you have for the other person while having sex by itself is just a physical act.

I think that there may often be a natural progression from lust (for sex) to making love (physical, emotional, spiritual) to love (ever-growing emotional and spiritual, but minus the sex). My closest friendship in all the world started out with lust and followed that progression for the next few years until the sex dropped away but the emotional and spiritual connection continued to grow and strengthen. Neither of us could continue the physical drive/lust for each other, but once that fell away, the real connection blossomed into something really precious and beautiful.

You are spot on. Making love is two people having a deeper relationship. Physically, emotionally invested in each other. Yes two men can be truly in love. You can say it is an intimate dance. Trusting each other.

I think we give heterosexual couples way too much credit just because they can “ make a kid.” “Making a kid” does not automatically equate with making love. The number of acrimonious divorces even among couples with children proves that.

Great insight, Nick. A big thank you for the discussion. My view is this, when I was a teenager I had some "buds" I would regularly hook up with. At that age your blood is 50% Viagra and there was no romance or anything like it. WE KNOCKED HOLES IN THE WALLS (not literally). I have always liked what I call the "hardness" of a man vs the sweetness and gentleness of women. It is what informs my homosexuality. I have a man in my life and love him, but there is never any lovemaking. I am in NO way disputing or dismissing your thoughts and analysis. I believe you are 100% spot on. For me , I guess, what I'm trying to say is I would rather read an ARMY survival guide than a Danielle Steele novel. As always, peace, love, and blessings to you and your channel. Give Pearl a treat for me, please.

If you are just thinking about physically satisfying yourself without thinking about the other person then it's just casual sex. But if you are thinking about the other person's needs too and are more tender and gentle with them while being physically involved, then it means you are making love to each other.

I had a 39 year monogamous partnership with a man 15 years older than me. I didn’t realize there was a difference between sex and making love until he died and I started dated again.
Turns out - apparently we made love for 39 years - and just plain sex is - mmmm - weak??? by comparison. Not sure if the right word. Sex is not fulfilling for me at any rate. I thought about this a lot. So. The mechanics are the same. But I think the difference is that making love is using the physical act as another language to yell to each other that: you’re enough. You satisfy my every need. You’re the crater of my universe. And I guess I bed to give and get that
By the way - took four years - but I finally found someone to speak that language with again. And damned if he isn’t 15 years YOUNGER than me! Go figure. Life is funny.

As a Demisexual, I hope I can make this distinction pretty simple.
Like when someone asked "How do you know when you're in Love?" "It's when, suddenly, all those Love Song actually make sense!
When my best friend (the ultra power bottom) was ecstatic in telling me that he had "Made Love, just like You do", he'd finally got it!
You see Nick, unlike Sex, making Love is You engaging in a physical act with someone where "Their" Satisfaction trumps yours
By fulfilling their needs & desires You also, inadvertently, meet your own. In France, it's the difference entre Baiser & Faire L'Amour!

I would define sex as is any act with two or more people that excites the genitalia and the hormones that go with it. It can be with people you know or strangers, it can be intimate or anonymous, voyeuristic, or BDSM. Love is a bond created by sharing experiences, emotions, conversations, and acts of kindness between people over time. It is a form of understanding, trust, and ability to count on the other person for comfort or help. A person can love a partner, a family member, or a close friend with or without sex.

I prefer the word intimacy instead of love. Too many gays are caught up in chasing their masculine fantasies; therefore, intimacy and sex are like oil and water in the gay community. A very small percentage of gay guys find both in one person. Many are hooking up with someone that represents a masculine facsimile. If they get to know the person behind the image, quite often the fantasy is blown to pieces, and the masculine chase continues.

Once you find “that person” you tend to slow down and the raw sex turns into beautiful love making. I, a gay man, have been I. A beautiful relationship with my husband for 41 years now. Leaving the lustful guy from afar with no other options than his own hand, a video of him, and clean up wipes.

  • @steves9905

to me making love is when you complete each other and find your romantic fulfillment in your partner(s)...and not even necessarily having sex. I think anyone can have sex nearly with anyone, given enough alcohol, so is not tied to romantic love. I am complete emotionally and mentally with my man, but can/could have sex with other men, and women, without being romantically entwined. The best thing about being gay men is that we can pursue sex and love separately, or together, as we need...totally freed from the heterosexist norms that we can never fit in anyway. Just be sure to communicate fully with each other.

Your definition of making love is not wrong, but not the sole way. When you add spirituality to the equation there's really no limits and unmeasurable by normal scientific means.
You can make love with a stranger as you can fall in love. And not everyone makes love "romantically" some people feel it's more intimate for them with someone when they can be what most society would consider alternative sex (kinks/ non "romantical"). Just my opinion. 😊

Making love is a very intense feeling that is clearly separate from just a physical sex act. If you aw in love, truly and deeply, you will instantly know the difference for someone who has a long sexual life experience.
Anyone with little sexual experience can easily mistake love when it is not. Their excitement about having met someone who they think is physically nice gets lost in fake love land.
Go missionary, look deeply into his eyes while…, you know. Take your time, hold it and stay in position. Imagine that, well I can’t describe that, it’s a feeling. Also, you must know the person, everything about how they love, feel, express themselves. Because you are taking all that in too, at the same time. Every thought is happening at once. Every emotion is running through you so deeply that you also feel it in your body. When that explosion happens, you might feel like you could cry a little. Because what just happened was other worldly. Something you never felt before. No matter how many times you did this before.
That’s a tops perspective. A bottom would have similar emotions I imagine. Because whatever that person is feeling in that moment, you fell from that person. It’s a dual reaction from both parties. When one doesn’t feel the same, it’s like a link that broke. You will know if you are thinking clearly without asking. It’s just a “oh”. Not another word need be spoken.
Now, that verbal person, you know them, will always want that voiced challenge of “why”. Because they think they can make a person feel what they don’t.
So Nick, if you “think” (your word) you are making love, understand it is also felt.

VERY UNPOPULAR OPINION: I'm a 55 year old, "muscle daddy" from what I get labeled. lol. I came out about 5 years after the AIDS epidemic wiped out a whole community of people in my (old) home town, San Francisco. I have seen gay go through the decades and all of it's phases. To get laid back in the day, you would go to a bar, see someone you like, strike up a conversation and get to know the person a bit. Now, sex is like ordering take out on DoorDash with gay apps. You can literally reject someone (ouch) by a swipe. completely anonymous. Gay men have a tendency to seek acceptance and validation and we use sex and our bodies to fill the void. Unfortunately the void cannot be filled that way. We treat one another as disposable... and yesterday's trash. I do not see making love in the community at all. Apps or no apps. Just a lot of empty sex, which causes rejection if the other person wants more. It's an empty cycle. Maybe there is a whole nother world out there where people are making love, but I don't see it.

Your comments reminded me of a scene in Madeline Miller's book Song of Achilles, which is about the relationship between Achilles, a classical Greek hero, and Petrocholus, his friend. These two are friends since boyhood, sexually attracted but their relationship is ambiguous. They sometimes share a bed, as men do, and on this occassion something unfolds between them. They begin to kiss and caress. Petrocholus eventually notices a wetness and is startled and confused by it. So, can two men make love? I'd say, yes, from Miller's fictional account of this mythical romance. Yes, that is possible. It's a weird question, really. It kinda echos an old homophobe's complaint about gay men, that they were only ever interested in orgasm. I don't remember her name.

Sex is when 2 people who's only connection is the desire to get naked and use the other person for their own pleasure. Making love is when 2 people who's primary connection is that they want to get naked and explore each other's bodies for their mutual pleasure. Sex is spontaneous and selfish; where making love is mutual and nurturing. Sex is anonymous; making love is intimacy. If the 2 guys are into it, sex can be an all night adventure of pleasure. What makes sex really great is when I discover the guy I am with finds me attractive and decides to include my needs into our mutual activity. THAT is when it becomes intimacy! Intimacy is the best feeling in the world! YOU GO BOY!!!!!

Even when I knew I would never see him again, I was still of a mind to make sure they had as good a time as me, maybe even better. You can have intimacy, enjoying your partner of the moment, without romantic love. Your post at first sounded very sex negative...it kind of pulled back from that in the last couple sentences.

@@steves9905 You misunderstood what I was saying, as evidenced by the last sentence in your reply. When a man is scrolling Grindr, he isn't thinking, "I could GIVE that man a lot of pleasure," he is thinking, "I could GET a lot of pleasure from that man.". What makes sex great is when the guy I am with decides to take my needs and wants into consideration and we both benefit from the interaction. Sadly that is not the case most of the time. Many times we walk away from sex thinking that was a waste of time. THAT is the difference from bad and great sex.
